From her earliest memories in Bloomington, Illinois, fear tattooed Bonnie's soul. Threats from a drunk uncle and a hellish encounter in a cold bedroom left her searching for good. Mr. Sun and open spaces gave her glimpses of another world, a world of hope she could never quite touch. Not finding the light she longed for, Bonnie filled her teenage years with anger, rebellion, and a vow to shake off her past. Booze didn't help. Drugs, either...but they gave her the highs she craved. Too bad she always came down. A marriage out of her league and a move to L.A. took Bonnie places she'd never imagined, but it was never enough. When Hollywood dreams fizzled, life back in Illinois and a search for God brought her to the brink of a black abyss. She would find truth...or die trying. In this poignant story of how one soul found Jesus to be so much more than a cuss word, experience how a West Side Bloomington addict birthed the Jesus House, a place where life's tattoos become God's materials for transformation.

Raised in a frightful, unstable environment, Bonnie Lentz emerged into adulthood seeking hope along the cliff's edge of many deadly pitfalls until she found the true light that would not extinguish. This is the story of that precarious walk and the light that finally came pouring into her life.It is a strongly told story that takes a bold look at both the darkness and the light. It moves at a brisk pace. The dialogue is brilliant and authentic. It is not a book for the timid reader, but rather is a strong antidote for the disoriented soul and an open-book primer for the Christian who desires to understand and come to the aid of the cliff-walkers.This story is a shining example of how no life is beyond salvaging. Bonnie and her husband, Tom, have gone on not only to flourish in the light, but to plant a lighthouse squarely on the cliff of pitfalls to shine forth Jesus's light and to reach compassionate hands out to floundering souls.

By Linda Randle In Tattooed By Jesus, Bonnie chronicles her life from childhood to adulthood and how the tattoos of the world were etched into her soul (dysfunction, sexual abuse, drugs and spiritualism). Throughout her life, she is on a quest to find out about life and death. This quest takes on a journey that the reader could never imagine. This quest comes to a screeching halt when Bonnie has a miraculous encounter with Jesus Christ, of the Holy Bible, He rocks her entire world. Bonnie’s life is never the same. You will witness the scales coming off of her eyes. You will read a first-hand account of Bonnie’s radical transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit. Tattooed by Jesus is a must read. You will not be able to put it down. I wait in expectation for the sequel.

Bonnie could be considered an ‘average’ person growing up in an ordinary Midwestern town, but the challenges she faces, the ugly and destructive situations she gets caught in, and the unexpected turns she takes on the quest to find a purpose in life all make for a memoir that reminded me of the phrase “sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.” It chronicles her challenging childhood, including an often-drunk and abusive father, being evicted frequently from their homes and an environment that introduced her to drugs by the time she was in junior high. I found it hard to read at times, because of the ugliness of what she was going through, but that made it all the more remarkable to read of the people who cared about her and the perseverance she showed to do something positive with her life – like the effort to be the first person in her family to graduate from high school. After high school her search to find meaning in life intensifies, along with her plunge into various attempts to find answers, like habitual drug use, destructive sexual relationships, and exploring the channeling of spirits. As everything in her life seems to get darker and more messed up, she finally reaches out for God. The way that God breaks into her life through unusual circumstances and transforms it is truly inspiring. I’ll admit, the book is long, and sometimes it feels like the reader has to wade through a lot of ‘muck’ in Bonnie’s life, but it does make you appreciate the redemption at the end.I appreciate that the story was very ‘real’ and down to earth, told from the perspective of a child during Bonnie’s childhood, and the story maturing as she got older. Since it is the true story of her life, there are lots of references to place (street names, landmarks, etc.) that help to remind you that this is not fiction – it could be your neighbor you are reading about! Most of the story takes place in Bloomington, IL, and my one critique is that if you don’t know Bloomington, some of the landmarks or streets referenced could be more confusing than helpful. All told, this is an incredible book and I highly recommend it. It is inspiring, engaging, and challenging. While I don’t know Bonnie personally, I think she is a remarkable person, and am grateful for this book that reveals a glimpse of the power and love of God in her life.
