Joseph W. Naus was living the American Dream. He'd survived a brutal childhood, graduated from Pepperdine Law School, and become a successful attorney. Then one night, his American Dream-life became a nightmare when his sex and alcohol addictions collided and exploded. "On Tuesday, I was a respected civil trial lawyer making six-figures. On Wednesday, I woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed charged with attempted murder...and then it got worse." Straight Pepper Diet is a book about surviving one's own wreckage. It's harrowing, sometimes hilarious, and surprisingly hope-filled.

From the Inside Flap Straight Pepper Diet relates to the phrase, Sex is the spice of life. As such, straight pepper diet generally refers to a voracious sexual appetite and overactive sex life. It is generally believed that the phrase was coined by Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, in the book he authored, Alcoholics Anonymous, first published in 1939. The phrase straight pepper diet appears only once in The Big Book (as members informally refer to it), on page 69 of the fourth edition. As of 2011, over thirty million copies of Alcoholics Anonymous have been sold, making it one of the best-selling books of all time.

From the Back Cover On Tuesday, I was a respected civil trial lawyer making six-figures. On Wednesday, I woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed ... and then it got worse.Joseph has spent the last twelve years learning humility the hard way: making a living doing everything from picking up the trash on film sets to selling outdoor kitchens at home shows for a former client, all while cleaning up the wreckage of his past and building a new life.  Joseph lives in Echo Park in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Theresa and cat, Bogey. He spends much of his time writing, helping addicts recover, and perfecting his swing on Los Angeles' public golf courses. His next book, Golf is Magic (Not Exactly a Book about Golf) is scheduled for release by Killer McMillan Publishing in 2016.

I had three sleepless nights reading this book!! One of the best books I have read in a very long time!! Straight Pepper Diet is a haunting, harrowing, hilarious, cautionary, and critical memoir about the depths of addiction to recovery and atonement. While it is at points critical of 12 step recovery culture, it also reaffirms its core tenants that helps put countless ruined lives back together. It also touches on the harm done by the overly aggressive prosecution of crime as well as the need to reform prison culture and curb its violence. The book is distinctly "Southern California," written by one of its native sons and is "peppered" with humor and hilarity that is distinctly Generation X, a generation whose culture that is squeezed between the Baby Boomers and Millennials is largely becoming forgotten today.

By Robert Weeks I'm not generally given to devouring a close to 400 page book in 3 days, but that's what happened to me with this book. I'm also not one to write reviews on Amazon, but I have to make an exception in this case. I wish I had words to do this book justice, but anything I can think of just falls short. The story just grabs you, puts you inside the author's head and takes you along on an incredible emotional rollercoaster of a ride. This may just be the best book I've read, period. If not it certainly is the best I've come across in many years.

It would have done the same even if I'd read it in the morning instead of the evening. It make me delirious. The relating of his harrowing experiences is unique. I've never identified with an author as much as I did here. A phrase that continues to haunt me: "the voice which narrates my despair". I think anyone who's been in the Abyss of addiction will know what this means without further comment. When I finished the book, I took a couple minutes to reflect on my feelings before turning in (at 8 a.m.). I was brought into the dread of his situation, the irrevocable choices, the lacerating shame, the paralyzing fear, and the ludicrous comedyWritten in a spare, almost hard-boiled style, but not without moments of high-flourish, I think anyone who is ready to grapple-- hopefully vicariously and not personally--with the affliction of addiction and the exaltation of recovery will escape astounded and chastened.Among the best memoirs I have ever read.
