A long time ago on a planet near, near at hand . . .In 1977, a nine-year-old boy saw the most amazing movie ever. To a child already obsessed with superheroes and adventure, Star Wars was the penultimate cinematic achievement of all time. Not only did he desire to see it again and again and again, it changed the way he viewed the world. In his latest comical mini-memoir, John Phythyon takes you on a guided space-tour through the science fiction of the late '70's (especially Star Wars), his mad quest for the right toys and gadgets, and his absolute certainty that he was not of this Earth, but rather an alien prince with an heroic destiny. If Ralphie from A Christmas Story had grown up in the 1970's instead of the '30's, this would be his tale.Click "Look Inside" for a free sample.Praise for other mini-memoirs by John Phythyon:"Secret Identity: My True-Life Adventure as a Superhero""Short, witty, and at times heart warming, Phythyon gives us a window into the mind and soul of an eight-year-old boy. With a sprinkle of Garrison Keillor (A Prairie Home Companion) and a splash of Bill Bryson (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid) Phythyon spins a real life adventure about being adventurous."--Chris Watson"Naughty & Nice: My True-Life Adventure with Santa Claus""I recommend it highly for any children of the 70's, lovers of humor, and of the adventures which children find themselves having."--Ryan Flessing"Domestic Disturbance: My True-Life Adventure in Sibling Rivalry""Another great book in the series. These mini-memoirs are so much fun to read and I usually finish them in one setting. They really are THAT good."--Amy BrantleyClick "Look Inside" above for a free sample of "Rocketed to Earth."

As in previous memoirs, John finds a balance between angst and awe with a touching hommage to Star Wars and childhood hero worship. If you are a man you will get it. If you are a woman it will help you understand the "boys" in your life.

American history of the unstuffy variety By Whistlers Mom Last year, I read and enjoyed Phythyon's SECRET IDENTITY - the tale of his time as a Super-Hero disguised as a small boy. Now he's matured (10, to be exact) and his world is rocked when his father is taken to see the movie "Star Wars" and (over his wife's strenuous objections) insists on introducing his young sons to the "Star Wars" phenomenon. And what a phenomenon it was! Understand, I'm not a "Star Wars" fan. I've bought "Star Wars" toys for young relatives and made "Star Wars" costumes that would bring tears to George Lucas' eyes. I once made a Jabba the Hutt costume that almost drove me insane. (It was a HUGE hit.) I've never seen any of the movies.Still, "Star Wars" is part of our cultural landscape and the background information that Phythyon gives is fascinating. Of course, at the time, he didn't know anything about the odd combination of events that led to the movie and how it changed movie-making for all time. He just knew that it was an exciting story with attention-grabbing characters and he wanted to be part of it. Before long, he was only PRETENDING to be American schoolboy John Phythyon. In reality, he was the long-lost Prince of the Empire, hidden by his birth-mother to save him from being murdered by Evil Forces. It's my belief that the parents of little boys know almost nothing about what's going on in their sons' heads and even less than that about what the boys get up to when no adults are watching. And I think that's the way it's supposed to be because being the parent of a son is scary enough. Phythyon is a fine story-teller and he manages to get inside his ten-year-old self in a wonderfully entertaining way. It's a lively and sometimes thought-provoking look at American middle-class family life. And the story of his younger brother's unintentional destruction of the Star Wars Club House is priceless.

The details are different, but I did pretty much the same thing growing up, having convinced myself that I was something else, other worldly, although in my case it was not triggered by something on the outside like a tv show or movie, it was all internal, but I digress, the fantastic leap of logic was the same. I laughed out loud about the card board box club house incident. I won't spoil it for the people who haven't read it yet.
