Marines who fought the North Vietnamese Army weren’t interested in God, country, and Mom’s apple pie: They were focused on fighting for a cause that was never fulfilled.
Thomas Hynes, a Marine Corps second lieutenant who led the 2nd Platoon, Lima Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, looks back at the challenges he faced undertaking his first command. He quickly learned that the North Vietnamese Army was far more capable to fight in the jungles and mountains.
But that didn’t stop young Marines from fighting for their country and each other—even though it resulted in fifty-eight thousand of them being killed. Seeing so many die was one of the reasons Hynes’ goal was simply to survive the war with his men—not win.
While Hynes would put up his Marines against any other soldier or Marine who fought in Vietnam, he argues that soldiers barely out of high school were asked to fight a war in a country that was beyond hope.
Despite the overwhelming odds, once they were there, they fought bravely for a cause they didn’t understand. He looks back at all of it with honesty in It Wasn’t Like Nothing.

You get to know the Marines and especially the LT. The book describes a Marine grunts life in Nam and you come to appreciate the very hard life each grunt led. Hours of humping the bush. Little rest for days on end. You come away with a new respect for the guys on the ground doing the actual fighting, not the REMFs. The officer corps, well that's a whole other story. Officers with no field experience calling the shots and putting everyone's life in jeopardy. Stinking body counts and their next promotion was all they seemed to care about. The end was the toughest part of the book. The Lt. had to leave his 2nd Platoon. By then his men were his family. That's the way it was in Nam. You fought for each other and you cared for each other.Highly recommend this book. Semper Fi.

I was a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam at the same time as the author, albeit in a different part of the country. The author's descriptions of the rain, heat, fatigue, apathetic Vietnamese farmers, and inept ARVN soldiers was spot-on. This book is a quick read and an excellent resource for a junior officer. Reading it, helps explain the mysticism of pride in the Corps and a brotherhood-in-arms. However, the stories, accurate as there are, would probably not be so well received by senior commanders and especially by "REMF" staff officers.

A Compelling Journey Through Hell By Dee Long Hynes writes with such detailed description and passion that the reader feels like he right there next to him in the hot and hellish killing fields of Vietnam. The title refers to how most veterans of this misguided war respond when asked to describe what went on. Hynes manages to take the reader front and center into all of the madness, comraderie, pain and horror that were all facets of this dedicated Marine's experience.
