This was an excellent read By Phyllis Franssen This was an excellent read - My Father, Ed Dalloz, knew Jim Riley and was past President of the Magic Masters of Chicago 1948 - Jim Riley was President of MM in 46. I'm sharing the book with my siblings as we grew up with magic and my Dad incorporated it into his presentations as a florist as he was also President of FTD. I have fond memories of the many items purchased at Riley's and still have a keep sake box of vintage magic items that I treasure!Fantastic Book!!!!!

A long time ago on a planet near, near at hand . . .In 1977, a nine-year-old boy saw the most amazing movie ever. To a child already obsessed with superheroes and adventure, Star Wars was the penultimate cinematic achievement of all time. Not only did he desire to see it again and again and again, it changed the way he viewed the world. In his latest comical mini-memoir, John Phythyon takes you on a guided space-tour through the science fiction of the late '70's (especially Star Wars), his mad quest for the right toys and gadgets, and his absolute certainty that he was not of this Earth, but rather an alien prince with an heroic destiny. If Ralphie from A Christmas Story had grown up in the 1970's instead of the '30's, this would be his tale.Click "Look Inside" for a free sample.Praise for other mini-memoirs by John Phythyon:"Secret Identity: My True-Life Adventure as a Superhero""Short, witty, and at times heart warming, Phythyon gives us a window into the mind and soul of an eight-year-old boy. With a sprinkle of Garrison Keillor (A Prairie Home Companion) and a splash of Bill Bryson (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid) Phythyon spins a real life adventure about being adventurous."--Chris Watson"Naughty & Nice: My True-Life Adventure with Santa Claus""I recommend it highly for any children of the 70's, lovers of humor, and of the adventures which children find themselves having."--Ryan Flessing"Domestic Disturbance: My True-Life Adventure in Sibling Rivalry""Another great book in the series. These mini-memoirs are so much fun to read and I usually finish them in one setting. They really are THAT good."--Amy BrantleyClick "Look Inside" above for a free sample of "Rocketed to Earth."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Winner By Christopher Watson Once again Phythyon strikes a perfect chord about boyhood. As in previous memoirs, John finds a balance between angst and awe with a touching hommage to Star Wars and childhood hero worship. If you are a man you will get it. If you are a woman it will help you understand the "boys" in your life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. American history of the unstuffy variety By Whistlers Mom Last year, I read and enjoyed Phythyon's SECRET IDENTITY - the tale of his time as a Super-Hero disguised as a small boy. Now he's matured (10, to be exact) and his world is rocked when his father is taken to see the movie "Star Wars" and (over his wife's strenuous objections) insists on introducing his young sons to the "Star Wars" phenomenon. And what a phenomenon it was! Understand, I'm not a "Star Wars" fan. I've bought "Star Wars" toys for young relatives and made "Star Wars" costumes that would bring tears to George Lucas' eyes. I once made a Jabba the Hutt costume that almost drove me insane. (It was a HUGE hit.) I've never seen any of the movies.Still, "Star Wars" is part of our cultural landscape and the background information that Phythyon gives is fascinating. Of course, at the time, he didn't know anything about the odd combination of events that led to the movie and how it changed movie-making for all time. He just knew that it was an exciting story with attention-grabbing characters and he wanted to be part of it. Before long, he was only PRETENDING to be American schoolboy John Phythyon. In reality, he was the long-lost Prince of the Empire, hidden by his birth-mother to save him from being murdered by Evil Forces. It's my belief that the parents of little boys know almost nothing about what's going on in their sons' heads and even less than that about what the boys get up to when no adults are watching. And I think that's the way it's supposed to be because being the parent of a son is scary enough. Phythyon is a fine story-teller and he manages to get inside his ten-year-old self in a wonderfully entertaining way. It's a lively and sometimes thought-provoking look at American middle-class family life. And the story of his younger brother's unintentional destruction of the Star Wars Club House is priceless.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I super loved this book By Albest I super loved this book! The details are different, but I did pretty much the same thing growing up, having convinced myself that I was something else, other worldly, although in my case it was not triggered by something on the outside like a tv show or movie, it was all internal, but I digress, the fantastic leap of logic was the same. I laughed out loud about the card board box club house incident. I won't spoil it for the people who haven't read it yet.

  • 15 Great Places to Retire in Europe
  • Conclusion

An excerpt from the book:

Berlin is situated within the enormous plains of northeastern Germany. Its rich history, notable culture and the infinite number of things you can do in this capital city of Germany make it an excellent place to retire. For a city that is the same size as Berlin, 3.502 million people is not a lot compared to other cities and because of that, your daily activities go by uninterrupted. Clean, green and spacious, its streets and parks are a favorite place for runners and cyclists. Berlin’s move to stand out as both an economic hub and a city that promotes a greener environment are some the things that tourists and retirees admire the most. There are moments when the city’s buildings and infrastructures feel like they stand there as an accompaniment to the lush and colorful trees surrounding them. Another thing that retirees and tourists admire about Berlin is its approach when it comes to redirecting traffic and reinforcing the law. If you would spend even just one day in Berlin, you would notice how safe it is to be on the streets, and for a retiree, this can already be a primary selling point for the city. Owning a car in Berlin is not necessary, because its streets and roads are both pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly.

By Jase_loves_books As I approach retirement age, I’ve been seriously considering retiring in Europe for a few reasons…lower cost of living in many places, lower crime rates, and the rich sense of culture and history evident all around. However, a relocation on this scale brings up many concerns and questions. Best Places to Retire: the Top 15 Affordable Places for Retirement in Europe by Clayton Geoffreys anticipates and addresses many of these concerns. This well organized book starts off with a list of 12 questions to think about as you contemplate retiring in Europe. These questions range from driving regulations to cost of electricity each month, political stability, and dependability of law enforcement. The next section takes a look at 15 top European retirement destinations, asking two important questions by city:- Why is it a great place to retire?- What is the local community like?Topics covered include:- Population- Cost of Living- Median Home Price- Percentage of Senior Citizens…as well as interesting facts about each locale such as great outdoor markets, not-to-miss restaurants, cafes that have been in business since the 1800s, biking and hiking trails, museums, historical sites, nightlife, and much more. I particularly enjoyed the small details the author includes, such as that there over 1,500 kinds of wurst (sausage) available in Germany, and around 2000 parks in the city of Vienna.I enjoyed this book very much and found it to be helpful. As a result of reading it, I’m now closer to finalizing my decision to retire in #4 on the book’s list…Lisbon, Portugal. Moderate climate, rich in history, delicious paella, reasonable cost of living, and friendly people. What a way to retire!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. OK But Not Great By Geraldine This was an OK guide but not great. The various places the author chose to write about in general terms were a good starting point, but in terms of actual requirements to MOVE and not just visit, nothing specific. I would have appreciated knowing more about actual visa requirements, etc...not just "touristy" type info. that could be gleaned elsewhere online.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extremely informative and well laid out By Laurel Horan Provides a ton of information about several locations that may be good choices to retire. It goes beyond just the cost of living, by adding details about the local community, activities, population, etc. It was chock full of details and could also be very helpful when used as a trip planning reference guide.

"

Marines who fought the North Vietnamese Army weren’t interested in God, country, and Mom’s apple pie: They were focused on fighting for a cause that was never fulfilled.

Thomas Hynes, a Marine Corps second lieutenant who led the 2nd Platoon, Lima Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, looks back at the challenges he faced undertaking his first command. He quickly learned that the North Vietnamese Army was far more capable to fight in the jungles and mountains.

But that didn’t stop young Marines from fighting for their country and each other—even though it resulted in fifty-eight thousand of them being killed. Seeing so many die was one of the reasons Hynes’ goal was simply to survive the war with his men—not win.

While Hynes would put up his Marines against any other soldier or Marine who fought in Vietnam, he argues that soldiers barely out of high school were asked to fight a war in a country that was beyond hope.

Despite the overwhelming odds, once they were there, they fought bravely for a cause they didn’t understand. He looks back at all of it with honesty in It Wasn’t Like Nothing.

You get to know the Marines and especially the LT. The book describes a Marine grunts life in Nam and you come to appreciate the very hard life each grunt led. Hours of humping the bush. Little rest for days on end. You come away with a new respect for the guys on the ground doing the actual fighting, not the REMFs. The officer corps, well that's a whole other story. Officers with no field experience calling the shots and putting everyone's life in jeopardy. Stinking body counts and their next promotion was all they seemed to care about. The end was the toughest part of the book. The Lt. had to leave his 2nd Platoon. By then his men were his family. That's the way it was in Nam. You fought for each other and you cared for each other.Highly recommend this book. Semper Fi.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Read By Amazon Customer The book quickly took me back 48 years. I was a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam at the same time as the author, albeit in a different part of the country. The author's descriptions of the rain, heat, fatigue, apathetic Vietnamese farmers, and inept ARVN soldiers was spot-on. This book is a quick read and an excellent resource for a junior officer. Reading it, helps explain the mysticism of pride in the Corps and a brotherhood-in-arms. However, the stories, accurate as there are, would probably not be so well received by senior commanders and especially by "REMF" staff officers.

A Compelling Journey Through Hell By Dee Long Hynes writes with such detailed description and passion that the reader feels like he right there next to him in the hot and hellish killing fields of Vietnam. The title refers to how most veterans of this misguided war respond when asked to describe what went on. Hynes manages to take the reader front and center into all of the madness, comraderie, pain and horror that were all facets of this dedicated Marine's experience.

By The Chosen One I actually read this book for one of my teen clients who was dealing with Mental Illness and she greatly benefited from this book. Again its simplistic style is to be celebrated, because it makes things easier to understand without all the words that can typically confuse someone. This is a great book.

Book 5 in the Wild Series about Alaskan Wilderness Survival. In the previous book 'Beyond Wild,' I believed my wilderness life and savageways are over! I came out of the wilds to live in an village. I believed a newpage was turned, bridges burned behind me. From now on I would be civilized, asa path to getting along, success, and being happy. I discover I cannot pull itoff! I cannot change who I am! "Now what!" Wilderness and Wild areways of thinking, as much as where you live. My mind is still 'savage.' I takethis as a compliment and 'civilized' as an insult. Because I look at whatcivilization has done to the planet, to the human race. I hang my head inshame. However I am human. We are all 'family.' I must learn to forgive and except.Find the good, find peace, and happiness, in my quest to discover how best tosurvive.  Being happy and prosperous is part of survival! In this book 5'Back to Wild' I accept again, who I am and what I stand for. However a shellgame begins. 'Savage' is not accepted by mainstream, or even by the law. I'mnot as open and honest as I once was. I'm still having 'adventures,' but onexactly what day did I kill that bear or moose, and exactly where? The wronganswer is worth $250,000 in fines and 5 years in jail now, which had not beenso in book 1. We follow changing times. I am now in civilization. I'm the headof the village chamber of commerce. I get a computer, start an on line businessand do well. There are mail order women to meet. Discovery TV wants me in theirreality show. I get better at finding fossils and mammoth tusks. I spend a lotof time in the wilderness on the rivers.

From the Author As I write each bookI am not sure what will be in the next one, nor what  it will be called, as I have not lived it yet.I appear to be headed back to the wilderness after deciding I had to move backto civilization if I hoped to survive! I miss the wilds. This is where my knowledgeis, and how to make a living. I'm being run out of the wilds by the government mostly. Not all wilderness people are having this experience, but I am high profilewith my art and name in the news a lot. I keep a foot in two worlds. I spendtime in the houseboat, on the homestead and also at my village home that haselectricity. I'm unsure if I will get back to the wilderness and my old ways, give that all up completely, or live some combination. I need to earn a lot moremoney to support life in the two worlds. I begin to make what I think is goodmoney! This as well perks the interest of those who want their fair cut throughpermits, taxes, and rules. It is unclear what is expected, who to pay and howmuch. The authorities do not even know. There is gas and oil under the land Isubsistence live on. Am I being harassed and forced off the land and out of alifestyle?

From the Inside Flap  PreludeThis is book five in a series. It is not absolutely necessary you read the previous books, but it is good to know what has gone on as an introduction. This  review of the previous books can be a reminder, if  it has been a while since you read the other books, or forget. I sum up the previous books and add....This book five I get a home in Nenana, start a web store. Begin to go to the big Tucson show to sell my art. I find mammoth tusks and sell them. I am head of the community Chamber of Commerce. A big change from the wilderness life alone! The adventures do not end. There are mail order women, trouble with the law, many civilized things to learn about.

From the Back Cover Reality has not set in for me. I have in the past paid plane fair for women to come be with me and try us out, see if we can work out a relationship. I stopped getting my hopes up very high. I got an email earlier from Iris, all excited. I do not even think I saved it. Basically saying she finally found me again! Wondered what happened to me! Apparently, we had written off and on for a while a long time ago! Do I remember!?Um, yea, sure, I guess "Nice to hear from you again! Wow, what have you been up to!" I begin to key in better as she writes a couple of times about how her father used to record music and she'd send it to me on a cassette. I guess I remember. The question is more if I want to. Why am I supposed to remember? I do recall the picture she sends. Yes, I knew her along time ago. I knew a lot of people a long time ago. What's your point? Well, her situation is different than it was 'then.' She had been taking care of a sick father who needed her. He has now passed away. Her job is sort of ending or at a turning point to where it would be a good time to start over. She is simply ready for a change, available now. I am not sure why we lost touch. My guess is I went out into the wilds and lost her address, or sent a letter she never got, or she wrote and I never got it. Life simply raced on by. She, at the time, did not seem available. I wrote because I like to write. But had a lot of such relationships by mail. Over 100. I pause. That does seem like a lot. Hmmm Well ,OK. Maybe that many I have written once or twice. Half that many at least a few times, and a good 25 I have written and got to know for several years and more. Not that it matters, only in that, this was not as unique an experience for me as for her. I did not want to feel guilty about that. Her being all excited to finally find me again she fell off the chair when she did a web search and found me and what not. Is it something I should seek? I'm not a masochist. I like to avoid pain. Love is something you can't help, like a tornado. If you are lucky it will not hit you. Give a sigh of relief when it goes on by in its path of destruction and has not killed you.Iris recalls I wrote, "Shit or get off the pot." She called my bluff and said, "I'll be there". I said, "OK, here's your ticket, we'll see" and "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (however that Latin goes ). She saw, she came, she conquered. That pretty much sums it up. She gave up everything she had to come be with me and start a new life over from scratch. This seems a good enough place to end my book 5! Friends joke the next book needs to be called, "Now Tame" Or 'Domesticated' or some such. "Very funny, everyone!"

Photographer's Guide to Ohio: Volume 2, by Ian Adams

Review

”I've always wished I could capture images as vibrant and dynamic as those of Ohio landscape and architectural photographer Ian Adams. Now he's written a book to help me—and others—toward that goal. . . . Adams’ book does serve as a terrific directory to some of the most scenic spots in the state, even if you have no plans to carry a camera, with complete contact information and GPS coordinates.” — Columbus Dispatch

“The first-rate book looks at 158 photogenic spots in Ohio (all open to the public). It will be loved by photographers, travelers, history buffs and outdoor lovers. It is stocked with 151 color photographs taken by Adams.” — Akron Beacon Journal

“Nature photographer Ian Adams agrees with me: Ohio is beautiful. . . . (A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio) works as a travel guide, a primer on digital landscape photography or just a fun read about little-seen corners of the state. It includes Ohio regional maps with color-coded photography locations. . . . (Adams’s) terrific images—many of them shot from unusual vantage points—are scattered throughout.” — Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Adams also gives good advice on storing your digital pictures, sharing them, and generally getting full enjoyment from them. . . . and I am pleased to say there is an extensive index. . . . If the book is a pleasure simply as a picture book, its stated purpose also is ably carried out.” — WVXU, Around Cincinnati

”If your favorite Ohio vacation souvenirs are digital photographs, a new book by Cuyahoga Falls photographer-writer Ian Adams belongs in your camera bag. A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio is like having Adams, Ohio’s premier landscape photographer, as your travel and photo guide.” — Carl Feather, Ashtabula Star Beacon

“(A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio) is the kind of book that can’t be written with only a few months of research. Ian had to draw on all his experience as Ohio’s best landscape photographer. That’s nearly four decades of hard but rewarding work. . . . The book. . . is equal parts travel guide, digital photography primer, history book, and, last but certainly not least, a compendium on some of the best places to shoot photos in Ohio. . . .” — The Mirror (Toledo)

“Few people are more intimately acquainted with Ohio’s natural places, its wild life, rural communities, and cities than Ian Adams. And few people are better qualified to record these points of interest and splendor than Ian Adams. A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio is engagingly written to help photographers improve their camera skills, but I treasure it most for its beautiful illustrations. Typical Ian Adams—a superb book.” — David Kline, editor of Farming magazine

The author pulls back the curtains on the subjective experience of schizophrenia.. This is an unflinching testament of what it FEELS like, symptoms and what not.

Interesting By Merlin Espinal Very well written: The middle part, where author describes a breakdown resulting and reasons behind it are good to understand. None of such patients takes their meds on time, what symptoms i can find and what cures are available.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very informative and necessary read. By Cathy Juntura Schizophrenia is an interesting illness- some of the symptoms clash with other disorders. However, this guide on schizophrenia sets them apart, along with differentiating between myth and reality. If you or a loved one has or may have schizophrenia, its imperative that you understand the symptoms, how to diagnose it, how to treat it, and how to live with it. Read up on this, for your knowledge, and even your safety.

A joyous and poignant exploration of the meaning of fandom, the healing power of art, and the importance of embracing what moves you, “The Dylanologists is juicy…artfully told…and an often moving chronicle of the ecstasies and depravities of obsession” (New York Daily News).Bob Dylan is the most influential songwriter of our time, and, after a half century, he continues to be a touchstone, a fascination, and an enigma. From the very beginning, he attracted an intensely fanatical cult following, and in The Dylanologists, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist David Kinney ventures deep into this eccentric subculture to answer a question: What can Dylan’s grip on his most enthusiastic listeners tell us about his towering place in American culture? Kinney introduces us to a vibrant underground: diggers searching for unheard tapes and lost manuscripts, researchers obsessing over the facts of Dylan’s life and career, writers working to decode the unyieldingly mysterious songs, fans who meticulously record and dissect every concert. It’s an affectionate mania, but as far as Dylan is concerned, a mania nonetheless. Over the years, the intensely private and fiercely combative musician has been frightened, annoyed, and perplexed by fans who try to peel back his layers. He has made one thing—perhaps the only thing—crystal clear: He does not wish to be known. Told with tremendous insight, intelligence, and warmth, “entertaining and well-written…The Dylanologists is as much a book about obsession—about the ways our fascinations manifest themselves, about how we cope with what we love but don’t quite understand—as it is a book about a musician and his nutty fans” (The Wall Street Journal).

The Dylanologists: Adventures in the Land of Bob, by David Kinney

Review “Fascinating . . . Kinney’s tale of the peculiarly symbiotic triangle between Dylan obsessives, his music, and the inscrutable man himself poses some interesting conundrums. In one sense, the people who follow Their Bob around on tour, scrounge his unreleased studio recordings or buy the manger he was born in are like refugees from a Coen brothers reality show: ‘Inside the Hoarders of Highway 61.’ But there is also a tantalizing sense that Dylan, as hostile or plain indifferent to them as he might appear, has his reciprocal moments too.” (The New York Times Book Review)“Entertaining and well-written . . . The Dylanologists is as much a book about obsession—about the ways our fascinations manifest themselves, about how we cope with what we love but don’t quite understand—as it is a book about a musician and his nutty fans.” (The Wall Street Journal)“The book, a compelling study of Dylan’s most fervent and studious fans, is always lively and sometimes funny, but Kinney never finds humor at the expense of the obsessives he profiles. By presenting sympathetic, respectful portraits of people who were inspired by Dylan to write, read, travel, archive, and rethink their lives, Kinney gives us a new way to think about one of the most thought about men of the twentieth century. . . . What’s more exciting is the way The Dylanologists shifts the perspective of a well-known history: Kinney recounts an important artist’s excursions into electric guitar, Christianity and even Christmas carols not for the purpose of examining what these periods mean to Dylan’s life or artistry, but what they mean for the lives and artistry of the people who experienced them. By celebrating these merits—be they the ingenuity to cull incredible collections or the wherewithal to reinvent oneself—Kinney’s subjects prove themselves more creative than kooky.” (The Chicago Tribune)“Fascinating . . . Illuminating . . . Deeply reported.” (John Dickerson, Slate)“By getting his subjects to talk about the moment, often years past, in which they were swayed by Dylan’s music, Kinney humanizes the archetype of the pop junkie. . . . Most of the fans that Kinney talks to aren’t fools or stalkers. They have simply developed an usually strong affinity for an artist and his music. . . . Kinney’s own fandom seems to have lapsed a bit into skepticism, yet he never mocks the continued devotion of those who still believe.” (Ian Crouch, The New Yorker)“[A] must-read book . . . While there are countless books about Bob Dylan’s life and music, Kinney approaches Dylan from a different angle—the followers, scholars and kooks.” (New York Post)“In Kinney’s hands, what might have been a fans-only romp becomes instead a surprisingly touching mosaic of stories about the meanings that people (even Dylan himself) seek so energetically from art and artists.” (Pacific Standard)“Entertaining . . . While there’s no shortage of Dylan biographies or analyses of his work, The Dylanologists offers an interesting examination of Dylan’s cultlike band of followers who seem to put their lives on hold while dedicating themselves to the performer and his music. Fans will certainly enjoy this book, but so, too, should readers who seek a fascinating examination of a strange subculture.” (The Associated Press)“Juicy . . . Artfully told . . . The Dylanologists is an often moving chronicle of the ecstasies and depravities of obsession.” (New York Daily News)“What’s worse, waking up an alcoholic or waking up as the editor of a Bob Dylan fanzine? . . . David Kinney’s The Dylanologists is the best book about music that has nothing to do with music. By holding a mirror up to the obsessives, the completists, the weirdos and the garbologists (those who literally go through Dylan’s bins looking for clues), Kinney provides the final word on the tragi-comedy of intense, unrelenting fandom . . . [and] reveals that Dylan himself is actually a red herring; what Dylanologists are actually after is a meaning in their own lives.” (The Irish Times)“Outrageous . . . Truly fascinating . . . Perhaps the only thing more inscrutable than Bob Dylan is the cavalcade of misfits and muckrakers that parade through this earnest exploration of the artist’s even more curious brand of devotees. . . . Alternately funny, intriguing, and shocking.” (Kirkus Reviews)“The Dylanologists is about people who care deeply about Bob Dylan—some obsessively, following him, studying him, as a central and powerful touchstone of meaning and guidance in their lives. Their fixations might seem quaint, even absurd, but David Kinney allows these people their genuine and hard-earned profundity. As we learn about their lives and thoughts, we also learn about Dylan’s, with insights that are compassionate, good-humored, troubling and revelatory, and that feel humane and accurate. This is a valuable and original contribution to the essential literature about a valuable and original artist. It’s also an absolutely pleasurable read.” (Mikal Gilmore, author of Shot in the Heart)“The Dylanologists is a wonderful book—well written, insightful, and smartly reported. In chronicling Bob Dylan’s fans, David Kinney provides a clear-eyed portrait of the artist and the country that created him.” (Jonathan Eig, author of Luckiest Man)“We have come to the metafictional stage of Dylan historiography—books not so much about the man as about his fans, his sources, his very relics. Kinney’s is fascinating, from his portrait of a pharmacist who has schemed to purchase not only Dylan’s childhood home but his high chair, to fans who somehow appear in the first row at every show. These are spooky sketches of a fringe culture in the twenty-first century, a world that could only exist because of Bob Dylan.” (Daniel Mark Epstein, author of The Ballad of Bob Dylan)

About the Author David Kinney is the author of The Dylanologists and The Big One. A Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, his writing has appeared in newspapers around the world, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe.

You see I have been stricken with a mild case of the disease that the subjects of this book suffer from (not that mild I suppose since I have a couple/few hundred Dylan discs in my house). I've gotten better in the sense that I have little desire to read more books about Bob. Most books about Dylan fall into a couple categories - either a biography (read Heylin's updated Behind The Shades and be done with bios) or else some author's tedious explanation of what they think the songs mean or how good the shows are. Who cares? Everyone brings their own interpretation to the songs and your view is just as good as Greil Marcus's. Except yours might actually be somewhat based on reality. But this book is different. It talks about the fringe followers - the people who obsess over Bob - who love him, love his work, buy every album and bootleg, follow him on tour, stalk him, collect windows from his boyhood home, possess screws from a Big Pink piano. It is so refreshing to read about real people with real experiences rather than rehashed biographical data and opinions. People who have actually met the man or who live for the next show or cd release. What is interesting to me is how the reader, if he is a Dylan fan, will automatically compare their own suspect behavior to the people in this book. I find myself thinking things like: "Yeah, I've done that" or "I wish I did that" or " That may have been a little much - but I kind of understand".The author said somewhere that he could have made this book 1000 pages. The biggest compliment I can pay him is to say that I wish that he did.

By missmickee/bookreview The Dylanologists: Adventures in the Land of Bob" authored by award winning music writer David Kinney was an unexpected intriguing read. The topic of exuberant scholars, professors, fans/followers totally obsessed with Bob Dylan that dedicate their lives to listening and analyzing his music, collecting bootleg tapes and other miscellaneous objects, scraps of paper- anything Dylan, stalking him- going to all his concerts, living their lives to meet him or have him notice/speak to them. Though Dylan's music will be likely remembered hundreds of years from now, many of the more serious fans detailed and profiled in the book were both fascinating and disturbing.Kinney writes historically of Dylan: from the shrine of his hometown in Hibbing, MN where fans congregate, early music career and concerts beginning in the 1960's to current times. It was interesting to learn that the historic 1969 Woodstock Festival was planned around a hopeful appearance of Dylan who lived in Woodstock at the time. Dylan's inspiration of Woody Guthrie's music was also noted, as was the folk, country, blues, rockabilly influences.Dylan has always remained elusive and somewhat mythical to fans, insisting that he wasn't who people thought he was, did not have anything important to say specifically to them beyond what was recorded in his music. He routinely changed his life situations, beliefs, ideas projected to fans, many theorized to "head trip", mess with fans, and avoid being known. He always refused to elaborate or define himself. Dylan, a private person, was overwhelmed by his millions of "strange", obsessed, and "needy" fans who wanted and demanded so much from him. Dylan didn't want to be a spokesperson or responsible for anyone but himself. Throughout the book, his fans consistently made Dylan and his music the center of their universe, this is unlikely to change. Many thanks to Simon and Schuster for this engaging read from the Goodread's Giveaways.

By Gail Ofterdinger As a preteen when Dylan achieved his first commercial successes, I, too, fell under the spell of his lyrics and recordings. It was intriguing to read of his literary influences and the meaning behind the meaning of some of his texts. I had little knowledge of his not-so-poor background (his mother owned a fur coat?)from an upstate Minnesota town. He practically sewed himself to the side of his dying idol, Woody Guthrie, and learned that idolatry is fraught with myth. What a hoot to read of the tour groupies who camp outside of each venue in all weathers, striving to be the first ones let into the hall, in order to rush up to the rail at the base of the stage on the off-chance that Bob might look down on them during the concert. Even more dedicated are the surreptitious tapers who attach their recording equipment to their skin with duct tape to sneak it into the concert. If you would have passed by the men's room before the show started, you would have heard loud ripping sounds as the components were ripped from their adhesive. Ouch! The author recounts the tales of folks who have devoted their entire apartments to shrines to all things Bob and the couple who owned the cafe in his hometown, crammed with Bob memorabilia. Waiting for Bob to come and bless it. We are also exposed the the uber Dylanologists, the folks who own every release and know every word of every song. They wait for the next crumb to drip from his lips. This work took me back and brought me forward. Find yourself first before your pledge your life to a reluctant hero. Well done, Mr. Kinney. My thanks for a complimentary copy to Net Galley and Goodreads.

It's very easy for someone to make excuses for themselves by using the label assigned to them by the medical community as a crutch. JT Cooper proves that labels don't mean anything and that, with the right mindset, you can find the employment you want and not just some dead end job where you will never get raises or promotions. I consider this an inspiring book and have made sure to tell both of my children with ADD about this. I recommend this to both adults with ADD and parents of children with ADD as well.It is well written and I am looking forward for more to come from Cooper.

Goddard After reading the first book in this series I was curious to see what post school life was like for the author JT Cooper. I was pleased to see that the author did not let his label of ADD deter him from getting what he wanted like the sports car. And like I said in the review of the other book I have children with ADD and seeing that this author was able to rise above it and be able to keep a job for more than 9 months gives me hope for my children.

I think whether you yourself have it or you know someone that does, you should give it a chance. If nothing else, it is a fun story about a person that we can all relate to!

A moving memoir about the joys and challenges of caregiving By Judith Romo “Come Live With Me” is a moving memoir about the joys and challenges of caregiving. It’s an honest account of a tough story, sprinkled with unexpected joys.Kincaid, a former senate staffer, sees her life radically transformed after she emits four words to her mother: “Come live with me”, after the later was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. There begins the many challenges of finding good care for her mother while caring for her business and her own health care needs. Being an only child and with no children of her own, she finds herself as the sole caregiver to her mother, the endearing Miss Dixie.Kincaid relates the progression of care, until she becomes a full-time caregiver. Surprisingly, despite this tremendous change of lifestyle, there is no bitterness in this account. By the contrary, the disease makes the author examine her own life and discover a nurturing part of herself that she did not knew she had. As she puts it “My mother’s care had become my life purpose”.There are many moments of laughter, like the periodic apparition of Miss Dixie’s mythical horse, or her scare tactics to nurses she disliked. The book ends with a useful list of resources, as well as a list of lessons learned. My favorite: “Alzheimer’s should not be feared”.Indeed, with her tale, Kincaid makes the disease seem much less scary, while portraying caregiving as something that can be deeply gratifying.

Alzheimer’s is a very, very serious disease that affects not only the patient but his or her family, especially if they are the primary caregivers, and Kincaid is blunt in telling it like it is. Like Kincaid, I am an only child and had sole responsibility for the care of my late mother who suffered from severe dementia. So, I felt the author’s pain and frustration on every page, but I also felt admiration for her willpower to keep going when things looked hopeless. Kincaid could even pause to laugh during some of the worst moments. This book is a must read for anyone, especially an only child, who has an Alzheimer’s patient in his or her family. If nothing else, it proves there is hope.

All I can say is "WOW". I recommend this read for anyone who has been a caregiver whether its Alzheimer's or not. The author gives you a refreshing no nonsense insight into the daily yet rewarding struggles of being a caregiver. A huge take away -- "IF YOU'VE SEEN ONE CASE OF ALZHEIMER'S, YOU'VE SEEN ONE CASE!' How the word Alzheimer's can be replaced by so many of life crisis, i.e. divorce, and almost any chronic illness you can think of. Thanks Barbara for sharing your story and allowing me to be a part of a support group through "Come Live with Me: A Memoir of Family, Alzheimer's, and Hope".
