Review
Rock and a Heart Place is a compelling, fascinating read. Ken Mansfield’s relationships throughout his impressive career include many famous artists, who, along with Ken, came to the conclusion that personal fulfillment cannot be satisfied with money, sex, and drugs, the trifecta of a rock and roller and that life ultimately holds little purpose without a relationship with their Creator. —Michael Omartian, Multiple Grammy® Award-winning producer, arranger, and musician, The Recording Academy (NARAS) Keyboard Musician of the Year
Where do rock stars go when they’ve tried everything the world has to offer and yet have continued to come up empty? In Rock and a Heart Place, Ken Mansfield provides engaging and perhaps surprising answers. This fascinating and fun-to-read book is loaded with inside stories of some of our favorite music makers. It is a classic reminder that regardless what messes our family or friends might encounter, the Creator is greater; nobody is beyond hope, and there is no need to give up on anyone!—Ken Abraham, New York Times best-selling author
Reading any Ken Mansfield book is an eye-opening experience. As an innovative producer and record company executive during the heat and heart of the sixties through the nineties music scene, his recollections of the way things were bring back not only the sights and sounds of the era but reveal the bigger picture of the Creator’s purpose for all our lives. Joined by respected biographer/author Marshall Terrill, Ken takes us on a mesmerizing journey traveling alongside some of the greatest musical icons of our time. Within these pages are real life stories of famous men and women who have tasted struggle, fame, fortune, and loss, yet speak today of restoration and renewal. —Phil Keaggy, Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame, Seven-time Dove Award recipient and two-time Grammy® Award nominee
In Rock and a Heart Place Ken Mansfield and Marshall Terrill present a brave and masterfully written opus of faith that explores the unexpected spiritual rewards of music legends as they share their journey from rock to redemption and who’ve traded their quest for music charts to winning hearts. —David Pack, Former Ambrosia cofounder, Grammy®-winning recording artist and producerAbout the Author
KEN MANSFIELD’s legendary career in the music industry began as a member of the Town Criers, a successful southern California folk group in the early 1960s. From there he moved to executive tenures as US manager of The Beatles’ Apple Records and, director at Capitol Records, vice president at MGM Records, and president at Barnaby/CBS Records. As a record producer, he was instrumental in launching country music’s "Outlaw" movement in the 1970s, producing Waylon Jennings’ number-one 1975 landmark recording, Are You Ready for the Country, and Jessi Colter’s number-one hit "I’m Not Lisa." Ken also produced the Gaither Vocal Band’s 1991 GRAMMY and Dove Award–winning Homecoming album, which also launched another historical movement, the resurgence of Southern gospel music via the Gaither Homecoming series of recordings, videos, and concerts. Ken is now an ordained minister, a sought-after speaker, and the author of four other books: The Beatles, The Bible and Bodega Bay; The White Book; Between Wyomings; and Stumbling on Open Ground. He and his wife Connie currently reside in Florida. MARSHALL TERRILL is a veteran film, sports, and music writer and the author of nearly twenty books, including best-selling biographies of Steve McQueen, Elvis Presley, and Pete Maravich. Three of his books are in development to be made into movies. Terrill resides in Tempe, Arizona, with his wife, Zoe.

Rock 'n' Roll history, with some happy, hopeful endings By Paul Mastin It's a familiar story: talented musicians passionately hone their craft, get discovered, make it big, and destroy their lives with the lure of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Sometimes the cycle ends with tragedy, but in some cases God steps in and lives are turned around. Those are the stories rock veteran Ken Mansfield tells, with coauthor Marshall Terrill, in Rock and a Heart Place: A Rock 'n' Roller-coaster Ride from Rebellion to Sweet Salvation.I love to read about lives that are changed by an encounter with Jesus. Some of Mansfield's subjects hit bottom dramatically after hitting heights of accomplishment in the music industry, living the stereotypical rock and roll lifestyle before being hit with their desperate need of a savior. As pleased as I am to see lives changed, I have a hard time sympathizing with some of these characters. I don't get the draw of the drug-addicted, self-destructive lifestyle some of them lived. I'm not judging; we all have our own sins and temptations. As Mansfield tells their stories, it almost seems like he believes they were following an inevitable arc.One interesting exception is perhaps the least likely: Rudy Sarzo. Despite his playing with Ozzy Ozbourne, one of the most notorious, villainized rockers, singled out by Christian critics as the epitome of what is evil about rock music, Sarzo's lifestyle seems to have consistently demonstrated clean living, family stability, and living for God. I have hard time wrapping my mind around playing one's instrument for the glory of God when the front man of your band is Ozzy, but that's Sarzo's attitude. Again, I'm not judging. Christians in every field can work "as unto the Lord" whether their bosses are heathens or Christians. The bulk of Rock and a Heart place is music industry history and back story. If you're a fan of any of the artists profiled, you will enjoy their stories of how they got into the industry, who they've played with, and what hits they had. In most cases, their conversion stories get short shrift, without much detail or spiritual, theological reflection. Also, Mansfield, a musician and music industry executive, injects himself too frequently into their stories. With some of them, he had professional interactions, but with most of them he just talked about how he could relate to their story and then he would tell some of his own story.Even though Rock and Heart Place is a bit short on inspiration and long on rock and roll history and anecdotes, I was encouraged by some of their stories and inspired to seek out some of their music. God was seeking them out amid their music, money and fame. In the same way, he seeks each of us out, wherever we are. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

I've really enjoyed reading Shane Evans's (Collective Soul) story of Rock , Recovery and Redemption. You can almost feel the pain as well as the honesty when Shane talks about surrendering to God. You get a true sense of what it feels like to be down and out and what it was like to just completely surrender yourself in exchange for Gods love and peace. I also read Brian Welchs story (Korn). I think I suffered a mild panic attack while reading his story of what seems to be nothing less than hell on earth. His story is so intense , I found myself "wow-ing" throughout the chapter. Another great story included in Rock and a Heart Place is the life of Rudy Sarzo. From tales of living under Castros power in Cuba during his childhood to joining Ozzy on stage and touring alongside the great Randy Rhoads, I feel this chapter really captures the essence of life on the road. You get a good idea of how much he values his friends and family. ~~ this is a great book, I can't wait to read more!

Not just because my friend wrote it, but mainly because the story is rich, inspiring and, yes, entertaining. In the book Ken weaves 12 stories of musicians from Mark Volman (The Turtles) to Brian "Head"Welch (Korn) to Nedra Ross (The Ronettes) and more. These are stories of passion and overcoming. They are stories of people who hit the top professionally and the bottom personally. These are stories of God's patience, love and redemption. And,through it all Ken humbly weaves his own story of victory and faith.I highly recommend this book, not just to music lovers and fans, but to anyone who loves inspiring stories. My thanks to Ken for sending me a review copy of the book.
