By Ed Timothy Moore's account of the Ernesto Miranda story is an interesting quick read about good old fashion police work. But more than that he recaps the details of a police case that changed how the criminal justice system operates not for just Phoenix but the entire United States. The Supreme Courts decision in Miranda v. Arizona had an impact on law enforcement nation wide. The book is worth the read as it tells the details of how this case changed how police work has been done ever since. Very well written!

Thane Mirandized Nation is a very intriguing look at the criminal career of Ernest A. Miranda and the effect of his arrest and conviction on a rape charge on American constitutional law and on police procedure across the United States.Miranda had a troubled youth and his education ended just before he completed the eighth grade when he was arrested for burglary. After a second burglary conviction, he was sentenced to the Arizona State Industrial School for Boys, and shortly after his release from that institution, he was arrested for attempted rape and assault. Later, in California, he was arrested for a number of crimes, including voyeurism. He continued to run afoul of the law, and by 1963, he had returned to Arizona where he was living in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix. After stalking several women, on the night of March 2, 1963, Miranda kidnapped and raped a young woman. Following the assault, he dropped the woman off near her home, robbed her of four dollars and asked her to pray for him. In the following weeks Miranda attempted at least two additional rapes but then was arrested after a tip from a relative of the original victim. She and one of Miranda's other victims then picked him out of a police lineup. As was the practice at that time, in Phoenix and virtually everywhere else, detectives interviewed Miranda and convinced him to sign a confession without offering to get him a lawyer. The presumption at that time was that the constitutional guarantee to legal representation did not apply until the accused was actually put on trial.Miranda was convicted of the rape and sentenced to prison. His attorney then appealed the conviction, arguing that Miranda should have had legal representation from the time he was placed under arrest. The Supreme Court ultimately agreed to hear the appeal, along with three other cases that raised essentially the same issue, and in 1966, in a 5-4 decision, the court ruled in Miranda's favor. As virtually everyone knows, the decision changed forever police practices across the country. From that point forward, arresting officers would be required to give suspects their "Miranda" rights, most often reading from a small card that itemized the salient points of the Court's decision. Released from prison, Ernest Miranda continued to drift along the margins of society, committing petty crimes and sometimes autographing Miranda Warning cards, in one case at least, even for a police officer. Finally, in what may have been the ultimate irony, Miranda, who had raped a woman at knife point, was stabbed to death in a bar on Phoenix's skid row, on January 31, 1976, following an argument over a card game.In telling Miranda's story, Timothy W. Moore and Clark Lohr have done a tremendous amount of research, principally in the archives of the Phoenix P.D., and they have interviewed a significant number of the police officials who intersected with Miranda over the course of his criminal career. They tell a gripping story which has the reader turning one page after the other, and which also provides a very interesting look at police work in the 1960s. From reading crime novels and watching television, most Americans are well aware of the Miranda Warning but know nothing of the man and the circumstances that lay behind it. This is a very entertaining and illuminating book which puts the entire story in context.

We've heard it often in our news, crime television and movies, perhaps even in person. This book takes an in-depth view of the man, Ernesto Miranda, for whom the decision and mandate was named. It paints a picture of both the man, those who survived his heinous acts and those in both law enforcement and our legal system who impacted our lives to this day.The story is told in very readable terminology and is fact based. Much of the book was based on transcripts and reports of the actual case. It is interesting to read a chronology of these events told, in many cases, in the actual tone of the time.As a native Phoenician, I was a young girl when all this happened. I do remember many of the places mentioned in the book. Though it was a simpler time, this book speaks of the nature of crime that might fit in any place or time in our history.I found this book to be a true page turner. The style with which it was written makes it both easy to read and very informative.I can recommend this book to anyone interested in true crime and history. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Miranda decision, it is more important than ever to understand the man, the crimes and the impact of this U.S. Supreme Court decision.
