“Let me tell you quickly. If I tell you quickly, like ripping a Band-Aid from a scab, I might be less likely to romanticize it, to recount my memories as some jaded love story. It wasn’t. Actually, it was a slaying, a murder to harvest fresh blood.” So begins the beautifully poignant memoir of Portia Bates, born in North Carolina where her mother’s family held reunions in nightclubs, and her father’s people sang songs to Jesus, praying for blessings to rain down on them like pixie dust. Yet, in that hallowed space lay a curled serpent, a deep betrayal by God’s chosen one. The delicate words in Portia’s narrative juxtapose sharply against the tangled web of deceit and complicity that created the space for the destruction of her innocence. And so, 20 years later, we meet the ghost of the child she once was, the one who lost her childhood to a long black robe and a stained white collar. We find her asking herself: “Why does this immovable, calcified rock sit so heavily on my chest? . . . He imbibed himself with a fertile garden he was never supposed to taste, a rose he was never meant to smell, satisfied his fingers with skin he was never supposed to stroke, and conquered a land he was never meant to possess. In that fading space between adolescence and adulthood where the mind, the body, and the soul are bubbling over with curiosity, he sat in the shadows watching me grow.” Portia writes these words as she struggles to live with the broken dreams of her adolescence, as she reaches toward a future her story never intended for her to touch. Perhaps it is family and deep roots set down in her native North Carolina that account for her survival. Portia endures a cruelty that no one should ever have to endure and yet rises above it to tell her tale eloquently and with remarkable acumen. The message of this haunting story is that sometimes to move forward, you must stare down your past, determine if its remnants will leave a trail of crumbs to your future. To determine if, in fact, there is any dream left in the soul. God is Not Pixie Dust, imbued on every page with Portia Bates’ haunting words and keen observations, is a book that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

By Lynne Muller This lyrical, undulating, painful, totally beautiful book is a must read for anyone who has been betrayed, violated and hurt by the very people who are supposed to love you most. It is a must read for any counselor, social worker, preacher, mental health professional, or caring person who loves and cares for young adolescents. It is a must read for anyone who has ever asked how this level of emotional grooming and violation can occur; for anyone who has blamed the victim, spoken poorly of the wounded and turned away from others to spare themselves the dissonance inherent in recognizing the truth. Portia Bates speaks in a voice that pulls you in and takes you on a journey that is raw in its honesty, real in its emotion, and unsettling on the soul. This is a voice that can not be silenced and calls forth a rallying cry for reflection of our most sacred and often most dysfunctional institutions and the small but powerful men who dominate them.

Beautifully Expressed, Heart Wrenching Memoir By Suzu From the line, “some stories can’t be told from rocking chairs on verandas sipping mint juleps,” Ms. Bates had me hooked. Her portrayals are vibrant, and it was easy to envision the people and places she describes in familiar detail. The accounts of her family life are rich with particulars of her life in the south, and I savored the author’s expressive style. This story grows agonizing, as the life and soul of a young girl spirals out of control. There is a valuable lesson for church members, who accept a "man of God" without question, but through omission, destroy the spirit of a child. I admire Ms. Bates courage in barring her innermost thoughts and writing this beautiful, heart wrenching memoir.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Simply Amazing By JaNelle Latney This book is one that tells the raw story of a beautiful young lady who was able to triumph over a tragic situation. Tragic because as stated, the church failed her greatly. Woe unto those who knew about the wrong doings from the pulpit and throughout the church and yet they chose to keep quiet and sweep their knowledge of the disgusting acts under the rug. Woe unto them who sat in leadership positions and did nothing to act on the information they received. But great is the God that we serve; for to read her story and feel as though you are walking through this reminded journey with her and then, see the beautiful flower that she has blossomed into today, makes one to know that God is real and that He is a healer and that He, the master potter, can take those who are broken and put them back together and cause them to be whole again. For those of us who serve in ministry, let this be a reminder to all of us that we are charged by God to encourage his people, not to use them, abuse them and then destroy them. We are held accounting for our acts and our actions. Portia, I am so proud of you and for how you have persevered through it all. Your book and your story are the very tools that are going to free a lot of women and young girls who have and who are going through the same thing, even today. This book is going to be the key that's going to unlock the past for them and allow them to step into their realm of freedom. You stay encouraged and remember, God is not through with you yet!!!
