By Donald Fickas I purchased this book, as schizophrenia seems to me to be a mystery to to the lay person. I am not schizophrenic, nor are my children or spouse. Additionally, I am not a health care professional, but I am always interested in behaviors. I found the book informative, educational and easy to read and particularly liked the summary at end of each chapter--very concise and very helpful. The title caught my eye (UNDERSTANDING SCHIZOPHENIA) and it is spot on. I learned the difficulty of even diagnosing the disease. The chapters on What Is Not Schizophrenia, Who Gets Schizophrenia, Common Problems in Facing Schizophrenia, and What Does The Future Hold give an amazing overview for educating oneself on a most complex disease. Kudos to Doctors Reddy and Keshvan.

I had bought a book on schizophrenia by the same authors in 2006 (and loved it). This book is written for family members specifically, it is one of the best and most easy to read books on schizophrenia in the market. It has all the essential information, and lots of tables and diagrams. Every chapter is full of tips. I especially liked the chapters called Manual for Caregivers. The book is very balanced between drug treatment and psychological treatments. What is really nice is that the message is hopeful and positive, but realistic. I strongly recommend this book to people with schizophrenia and the family members.
