Born with spina bifida and taken home to die, author Diane Glass thrived despite a dire prognosis. Yet she harbored a sense of unworthiness related to her body’s imperfections. Not until she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 52 did she move away from secrecy and toward candor, away from fear and toward acceptance, away from resistance and toward resilience. This bold memoir challenges our assumptions about what is public and what is private. Whether Diane takes the floor when the spotlight shines on her or sits on the sidelines, leads or surrenders, moves forward or back, her life dances with creative energy.

A few days after her birth the doctors sent her home to die. But today, 68 years later, she has overcome overwhelming health issues to blossom into a poised, self-confident writer. If you want to understand spina bifida and its effects, this book explains fully. But there is more. The reader becomes wrapped up in Diane's rhythm, her dance. As she states, "My life had rhythm, but it was a rhythm orchestrated by life itself--by the condition of my body, by the people around me, and by situations." Her carefully choreographed words convey the insights Diane discovers on her life journey as she meets with the challenges of health, career, relationships with parents, siblings, spouse and herself. This book is beyond a memoir. It is a meditation, a philosophical masterpiece.

With tenderness, courage and a buoyant spirit, Glass takes you on an unforgettable journey through the huge challenges of living with spina bifida. She explores her parent's need to hide her condition, the effect of having secrets, and her methods of coping that lead to the blooming of an indomitable spirit. This is a must read for all parents of children with special needs, as it gives them a child's and adolescent's perspective and the effect the parents actions have on them. Glass explores all this with a forgiving heart, and discovers within herself the rhythms and resilience that eventually bring her into a successful career as a journalist and spiritual director.

It was such a genuine account of the author's experience of growing up with spina bifida and her journey through life as a child, teen, young woman, wife, sister, step mother, and career woman. I was amazed and inspired by how Glass confronted painful truths and fears concerning her health and her upbringing. It was an honor to hear the inner workings of how she grew from these experiences. An excellent read. I feel inspired!!
