The large house gecko, called tokek, is regarded as a lucky talisman by the Indonesians. When its 'Toke' resounds in the night, they count how many times it calls, both in town and in the country, and this number determines how lucky the call is. Only an odd number is lucky: seven is already quite good, but nine promises the peak of success and good fortune. The author has spent 18 years in Indonesia and helped the young independent country in its development and construction on the sectors of telecommunications, electrotechnical and solar power engineering. Amusing and interesting events from his private and professional life during those years make this book historically interesting and also humorous reading for anyone who is interested in getting to know Indonesia off the beaten tourist track. The author and his famliy had tokeks in both their house in Jakarta and their weekend home in Carita. He often has heard nine successive calls, and the prophecy was fulfilled: Indonesia has brought the author luck and happiness.

Geerken's "A Gecko for Luck", published in 2009 is an extremely successful description of modern Indonesia which includes a review of the country's history. The author - from Bonn, and personally known to this reviewer for some time - is a broadly cultured and committed personality of the kind that one unfortunately meets increasingly rarely. His book reflects this in many waysThe author presents the political, cultural and human level of his 18 adventurous years in Indonesia, interweaving numerous humorous scenes with detailed description of the local customs, the flora and fauna, the romantic landscape and the indigenous cuisine of the country. His serious criticism of Dutch colonial policy in Indonesia - for many Dutch people still a dark chapter in their history that is suppressed even today - demonstrates clearly that Geerken is a truly political man. He positions himself unmistakably on the side of the Indonesians, who suffered a great deal under the frequently atavistic rule of their dutch colonial masters. A particularly fascinating and colourful part of his story is his personal impressions of Sukarno, the country's first president. He also tells many amusing anecdotes about ambassadors, diplomats and professional colleagues. Which of us is aware that it was a German, Adolf Bastian, who coined the word "Indonesia"? He also shows in his book how the CIA were the puppet-masters pulling the strings in the 1965 coup in order to prevent a Communist government coming to power. His experiences with native artists and also the work of the German artist Walter Spies, as well as the description of his successful "raids" on Indonesian antique dealers round this book off harmoniously. A gripping and very detailed book: I can thoroughly recommend it.

Interesting book about life in postindependence Indonesia By Devonport I loved reading Horst Geerken's book about his life in Indonesia and his indepth knowledge of the country's history. It is written with a lovely sense of humour and it is revealing events which were little known about, even in The Netherlands.I very much wish I would have ordered the book in it's original version - German - as the translation in parts is quite clumsy and therefore annoying. This book is a must for everyone interested in Indonesia.

Best Memoir for Indonesia 1963 - 1981 By Renee Thorpe Hugely popular in its beautiful Indonesian translation at the recent Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, this memoir is so engagingly written and vivid, readers cannot put it down for an instant. Has been rereleased as A Magic Gecko in its English version, which is also a superlative translation.Right now there is lots of attention on and interest in Sukarno, the general who led the country out from under colonialism. Geerkon saw the best and worst of rule under Sukarno, for it was his assignment to bring the country's telecommunications into the 20th century using German technology. But he was also witness to the social chaos of several turbulent years as Sukarno's vision collapsed and General Suharto brought in his New Order.Very few foreigners are still around to tell what they saw, and Geerkon has recorded so much of the horror, joys, and challenges with great detail. It is significant that Geerkon is an engineer. These oft-overlooked workhorses are privy to more than meets the eyes and ears of diplomats, salesmen, and those who flee the front lines at the first sign of trouble. If enough copies can be printed, this is poised to become the new "must-read" for Indonesia expats, Indonesiaphiles, Asia backpackers, and Southeast Asian history buffs. Without seeming nostalgic, Geerkon paints a tantalizing tableau of a happy, pretty Jakarta full of shady trees, skilled craftsmen of all sorts, jingling horse carts, and friendly places to eat fresh seafood and other delights. It's the kind of book many expats simply dream of discovering. There are fascinating accounts of all kinds of things, and if there's a gecko on the wall, it's not the one chirruping in Sukarno's Balinese hideaway. It's Horst himself, the energetic and skilled engineer who took on his task with enthusiasm and an open heart, eyes and ears wide open. In some ways he was just taking in everything from the sidelines, but it doesn't take long to realize that he was also making all sorts of innovative technological contributions without remuneration. Reader dives right into the amusements of the expatriates, the cross cultural bonds forged through shared labors, a trip to neighboring Bali right after the eruption of Gunung Agung, colorful characters, all of this sprinkled with keen political insight.A joyous, captivating read!
