About the Author Shigeru Osuka, B.A., M.A., M.Ed., and Ed.D., is the director of the Japanese Program in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Seton Hall University. He has taught at the University of Hawaii, Western Washington University and the Mid-Pacific Institute in Hawaii and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo.

Capobianco This Japanese language learning book, written by Dr.Shigeru Osuka, is a comprehensive and thoroughly informative book for Japanese language learning. This book provides clear and straightforward grammatical explanations on a language which is very different and challenging for native English speakers to comprehend. This book also provides many insightful culture notes about Japan and the Japanese language which help build a bridge to understand Japanese language and culture.The strong points of the book are that the author explains Japanese grammar in a very clear manner. Japanese grammar is very different from English grammar and it is thus quite challenge for native English speakers to understand. However, this book provides students with easy to understand explanations as well as examples of Japanese grammatical concepts. Japanese words are written in both the Latin and Japanese scripts so readers will not necessarily be forced to study the Japanese writing system if they wish to utilize this book; though the book does include a concise but efficient guide for studying the Japanese writing system, Hiragana.Since this is a book is intended for health care professionals, much of the vocabulary is catered towards building effective communication in hospitals and doctor's offices. There are also detailed diagrams describing vocabulary body parts, human anatomy, and physiological systems. This book also provides chapters for many diverse healthcare fields. Most every field of healthcare is touch upon from pharmaceuticals to OBGYN. Average students may not find all of the vocabulary applicable since some of it specifically tailored to suit the medical fields. However, there is enough useful and practical vocabulary that students outside the healthcare fields can still get the most out of this book.This book also provides an audio CD which is great for learning correct Japanese pronunciation as well as listening to the texts in the book. Each chapter also provides a culture note which helps readers to not only understand the Japanese language, but also put what they are learning into a cultural context as well.Overall this book is a great tool for healthcare professionals, doctors, pharmacists, or anyone in general looking to study the Japanese language. Due to the clear grammar explanations this book can be utilized not only by healthcare professionals but by any student of the Japanese language!

I have been studying Japanese for nearly five years and Japanese for Healthcare Professionals is one of the most comprehensive language textbooks I've encountered. Someone with no knowledge of Japanese can easily learn from this textbook right from the beginning. Complete with syllabaries, romaji, and the basics of Japanese grammar/sentence structure, even students of Japanese who do not plan on entering the healthcare profession can learn from this book. As the chapters progress, the grammar becomes more complex with equally as thorough explanations in English. Although there is not much emphasis placed on reading hiragana or kanji, the entire textbook is written in romaji so healthcare professionals who are interested in speaking Japanese can do in the shortest amount of time. Readers who are interested in practicing their listening skills can also do so with the CD that is included.Overall, I think Japanese for Healthcare Professionals is a great addition to the realm of Japanese language textbooks. While learning a language in a classroom setting, it is difficult for each student to learn the vocabulary or linguistic concepts of his or her own specialty/major. With this textbook, students studying Japanese and nursing or pre-med can enhance their marketability by learning a foreign language. Furthermore, current healthcare professionals can expand their own skill sets by becoming familiar with a second language.

Chary This book is a great introduction to Japanese with only a slightly biased vocabulary. I am a medical student who speaks Spanish and so am well-acquainted with books that teach the "medical version" of a language. This is much more than a glorified phrase book. Like the rest of Tuttle's Japanese it is a well-organized unique take on a notoriously difficult language for Westerners.The book introduces each word in romaji and kanji with furigana although it uses only romaji in the exercises.
