Maria von Trapp. Mother Teresa. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Saint Teresa of Avila. Delores Van Cartier (Sister Act). Sister Bertrille (The Flying Nun). These are all women who may come to mind when the word “nun” is used. It is a word that conjures up images of women wearing black robes and veils, singing in choirs and living a contemplative, serene existence. Or perhaps you picture cranky and deprived older women rapping Catholic schoolchildren on the knuckles with a ruler for misbehaving. You might even imagine them getting themselves into zany, madcap adventures dodging Nazis, mafia hit men or and wind gusts. Whatever your imagination conjures up, the word “nun” makes you think of, I am here to tell you: your preconceived notions most likely do not line up with reality. This book is about my decision to become a Catholic sister as a young woman in the twenty-first century. And as you can guess from the title, I did not stay in on that life course for very long for a variety of reasons, mostly stemming from depression and my own stubbornness. 'The Nun Diaries' is an brutally honest memoir how I decided on, reacted to, coped with, failed at, and ultimately grew from becoming a sister that year.

Engaging Read By @JamesSabata The Nun Diaries is the autobiographical story of Annie Kontor, a woman called to the sisterhood, only to find it was a temporary calling. There are no huge spoilers for this book. You really don’t even have to care that I might spoil things, as the title tells you exactly where this book is headed. The chapters are broken into the months Annie lived in the convent, allowing for a fairly chronological recounting her time there. Reading a lot like a highlight reel from her journal, Kontor’s story chronicles her battles with depression, her interactions with the other sisters, and her desire to find peace in her life.As a self-proclaimed “recovering Catholic,” I’ll be the first to tell you that books about religion (in almost any form) are not my go to reading material. However, I also attended a Catholic grade school and high school, so Annie’s struggles to maintain her faith resonated with me. The fact that nuns engage in great personal reflection before taking their vows has always been a given in my world, but I’d never considered that they may continue questioning their choices long after doing so. Not once had I thought that a woman who marries God might one day consider divorce. Kontor’s narrative not only illustrated the many reasons one could do so, but provided an insightful look into just how hard that decision could be to make. This book is a very engaging read, managing to shine light into an area of the world most of us have never seen, while not revealing so much as to be disrespectful to those still in the convent. You’ll have to read the book to know the rest of the line, but can I just say how much I adore this line:“I couldn’t even plan a tea party for two stuffed animals”.And trust me when I say you should read this book.

By Joseph As a Catholic school survivor (I never made it past fourth grade before being shipped off to public school) I had always interacted with nuns but I never really though much of them as human beings. To me they were the perfect living ambassadors of Christ. This book pulls back the curtain and shows these women as they really are...and their flaws, fears, joys, and tears are no different then the rest of us. This almost nun shows us into a world that most of us will never see and it's a trip worth taking!

I think the story would have had more punch if the author started in the middle of the story rather than sticking to a chronological retelling of her experiences. But all in all it was a good read.
