Sidney Nolan's Odyssey is a definitive portrait of Australia's most famous artist, drawing on many hours of candid, recorded conversations with the artist. Brian Adams created two major televison documentaries with Nolan as well as a biography, and this expanded work gives a more personal insight from the artist's own reflections and observations. The many books describing his art often fail to catch the character of this complex man, to see behind the myths and shadows. Nolan was as passionate about words as he was about crayon, ink and paint. He was showered with accolades from around the world, yet remained at heart the questing lad from working-class Melbourne. The young adult phase of his life was defined by his bohemian ménage à trois and the great narrative series of Ned Kelly; but his odyssey was only beginning. He was an inveterate traveller, constantly looking for ideas and stimulation, from Antarctica to Mao's China and everywhere in between. He chose rural England as a place to live believing he could view his homeland more clearly from a distance. Although he was born into an Irish-Australian family with no obvious connection to art or culture, he ended his life as part of the cultural elite on all continents. The centenary of Sidney Nolan's life falls in 2017.

Sir Sidney Nolan up close and personal By Rosie1 Brian Adams book is brilliant and made me feel like I was a part of Sir Sidney Nolan's inner circle, thanks to the author's long association with the artist. I love Nolan's work and although I'm an American, I grew up in Australia and Nolan is a National Treasure who should be known and celebrated outside his native country. After reading it, this book can help with that. Sir Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelley paintings are iconic but they don't have the attention outside of Australia that they should have, since Ned Kelly's story didn't really travel outside the country (though again, it should have). Nolan's paintings are wonderful and visceral - I am very lucky to have had the great pleasure of spending time with them in the National Gallery in Canberra. I have read many of Mr. Adams books (his book on Australian film is a must for anyone interested in cinema since people forget that Australia was a country that embraced film-making immediately at the dawn of it's inception and never got the credit it should have). It's great that Brian Adams was able to talk to/interview so many people in Nolan's life while they were alive and most importantly spend a lot of time with Sir Sidney Nolan himself, which not many people had the opportunity to experience. Mr. Adams is objective yet he makes Nolan and his work human. I'm thrilled I can now get this book in the U.S.
