1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Confessional, almost raw, and exceedingly candid descriptions of a remarkable life lived out loud. By John D. Wagner I am the nephew of the author, Richard McCarthy Coyle, and I compiled this book from Richard's selected papers. The book can best be summed up, spiritually, by this quote, which Richard used to introduce his award-winning play, Drawing Down the Moon: "Heaven preserve me from littleness and pleasantness and smoothness. Give me great, glaring vices and great glaring virtues, but preserve me from the neat little neutral ambiguities. Be wicked, be brave, be drunk, be restless, be dissolute, be despotic, be an anarchist, be a suffragette, be anything you like, but for Christ’s sake, be it to the top of your bent! Live fully, live passionately, live disastrously! Let's live, you and I, as none have ever lived before." (by Violet Trefusis in a letter to Vita Sackville-West.)That's Richard, as best as a few sentences can sum him up. And this book describes how he "lived out loud," while working and writing (initially as a journalist and memoirist) through the ecstatic peaks of the Hippy movement and the 1960s, and then -- as Richard found his confidence as an artist -- through a series of confessional, almost raw, and exceedingly candid descriptions of his many successes, his strivings and hopes (many dashed), and his remarkable connections with people as lovers, mentors, family, and friends... a life he often described to me as "lotta highs, lotta lows..." What this book offers is a glimpse of a brilliant mind, as Richard, unabashed, worked to describe and explain the inevitable complications of his human condition and his interaction with others (some troubled and difficult, others silk-on-silk and joyful... beyond even the experience of most people), while he fully welcomed the moments of ecstasy and marvel that were so central to his life. The journals and letters, and the section called Sex in Fifty States, offer often salacious detail of his lover affairs, while his plays offers the heightened domestic drama of his tangled fascinating family history, to say nothing of the remarkably touching fiction and poetry. That said, I suspect this book will offer the most to readers who knew Richard / McCarthy in his lifetime, or to those who wish to know more about him now that his is deceased. The book was a joy to put together, and the only thing I regret is the 400 additional pages of work I could not fit in this edition. -- John D Wagner
