This is a bit of Americana that has rarely been told. Living in an isolated married student housing project while husbands attended college on the G.I. Bill is not what it seemed. The year? 1948. The wives. Often faceless. Here are a few of their stories.... (More about the book) Wives of Copeley Hill are definitely part of the American phenomenon that shaped them into the June Cleavers of the future. Patient, pretty, long-suffering and stalwart and undemanding is enough to back their husbands wishes without question: and be forever the perfect mother in frilly aprons and high heels. But because returning soldiers are heroes and America adores them, we were often burdened with the true reality of half-developed husbands who grew up in fox holes. And now they were being shaped into the tycoons and monied stars of the future through education. The wives often sacrificed everything…the men often gained the total dream that was theirs alone.

About the Author "Although I have written and attended creative writing workshops for 30 years, this is my first firm resolve to 'get on with it' and get published. I attended Columbia University, studied metal sculpting and jazz piano, and later studied floral design in London, developing a successful design business that I directed for over 25 years. In between, I write." (More about the author's life) As a southern woman born along the Mississippi in the roaring 20s -1924 to be exact-there are memories of having moss and delta smells and reminders to “be a lady” from my Mamma. Reminders were set in place by 3 older brothers:not to cry, to be brave, and oh Lordy!… yodel like Tarzan when reaching the highest limbs of a tree. My grandmother, Victory, undid some of that by allowing me into her pink french music room or to play among the carved gargoyles that held up a huge dinning room table. Then a depression A war Marriage and children Then, divorce 26 years later. (the usual) The unusual of my life was traveling around the world, leading art tours to Europe, moving to the Fan in Richmond, Va. Restoring a home, owning a business, para-sailing, snowmobiling, and being happy—or unhappy. Both made me who I am. A writer.

By otterfly7 I really enjoyed getting to know this small piece of history on some gutsy ladies in post WWII Charlottesville, VA.I, too, was a Law School Wife (in the next generation, Richmond VA) and could relate to everything from the Virginia Gentleman to the pot luck dinners/picnics at the end of the paycheck! Those were (as it has been said) the worst (poorest) of times; those were the best (most fun and memorable) of times! We made it through the three years of stress on soup nights (everybody bring what's left in the fridge & we'll make soup), cheap wine and playing Charades. Our furnishings were grandma's attic or thrift store, our car was old but paid for.The part about the Korean War was a new bit of history for me....what a shock....to survive one war to be called up again before you can even get through school or get past the last one. (My family missed serving in the Korean War, but has served in most of the others!)I received the book at 7pm yesterday and finished it before I would go to bed!Write another one!
