My Heart: Memoir of Remarkable Love tells the story of Ronald Fitch and his wife Natalie, who is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer soon after they retire and are ready to fulfill more of their dreams. The inspirational memoir chronicles how they suffer through the physical and emotional pain of this dreaded disease. Yet their love grows stronger every day.

The bond that began when they first met as young teens wraps its arm around them, and they hold on tight.

Although Ron and Natalie faced this life-threatening challenge, their love and their hearts became stronger, guiding them along a long and wearisome road. They found strength they never knew existed, and that strength and inseparable bond allowed them to meet the uncertain perils of this challenge.

Will this horrifying disease rob Natalie of her dreams, her adventures, the gracefulness they share getting old together – her very life?

Natalie struggles with pain, sometimes crying out that she wants to die. Ron cradles her in his arms and tells her that he loves her with all his heart, that she is the very breath that he breathes, the warmth of his soul, the keeper of his light.

She is his life.

About the Author

Author Ronald Fitch grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts. He spent a number of years writing professional papers for his business. However, he was inspired to write his first book-length manuscript when his wife Natalie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Ron is an accomplished classical pianist, and he believes the emotion he brings forth while performing also helps him bring warmth, sensitivity, and passion to his writing.

Ron was inspired to write about those moments when, thinking about how this cancer might bring an end to the life they shared and cherished, their love gave them the strength to challenge this devastating disease.

Despite the almost daily horrors that Natalie faced in the later stages of this disease, there were moments of laughter, and that added to their strength.

My Heart will make you cry; it will make you laugh.

I found myself so engrossed that I before I realized it I had read it cover to cover in one afternoon and evening. The story drew me in and reawakened my feelings of what my mother and father went through prior to her passing. The feelings that they had for each other persisted in spite of the strain of her illness. I also saw alot of my husband and myself in the story. The love between Ron and Natalie is present throughout the story and clearly honors her memory. While I never knew Natalie but know Ron, this story makes me feel like I know them as a couple so well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Unforgettably Heartbreaking By Georgiana Romanovna Despite my heading to this review I don't want anyone to think this book is without joy, happiness and love. It is full of those very things, and yet at the same time the reader is faced with a harsh reality of life - we are all vulnerable and our time on this earth is limited.I don't ever write spoilers in reviews, so I'll not give anything away, but from my perspective I'm uncertain if the author would have found this cathartic to write. Perhaps it was painfully cathartic; I certainly sense the pain and agony and salute Mr Fitch for sharing such an intimate journey and for sharing his beautiful Natalie.I'm left with one feeling that stands out, at least for me. I wish I had met Natalie.Who would I recommend this book to? Anyone who has an open heart.

It is a beautiful tribute to his wife and thoughtfully written love story By Lee Chase Writing this book certainly must have been a cathartic experience for the author. It is a beautiful tribute to his wife and thoughtfully written love story. The level of detail in the writing brings the story alive, while still not causing the action to drag. This is a book that also describes the work of Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. They cannot actually do anything about death, but they can do something about pain, fear and comfort. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is called to be a caregiver for a loved one or anyone dealing with a loss of a close family member or friend.Lee Chase

Read Online Ebook Lettuce and a Lady's Breast: Looking back over 50 years of cooking, by Billy Gallagher

This is a remarkable story for both youngsters and adults who believe there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Billy takes us on a journey of growing up in the deprived post-war town of Jarrow in the UK where the future held, at best, the option of going down a mine or delivering mail to put food on the table. For this tenacious, engaging and spirited little guy, this was not sufficient. He was hungry for more. His great passion for cooking would take him through the hallowed kitchens of the Dorchester Hotel in London, and drive him to become literate through hard work and the encouragement of his loving wife Linda, prior to embarking on an African culinary adventure on the southern tip of Africa. Billy shares the amazing changes in his adopted country, his meteoric rise through the corridors of Sol Kerzner’s Southern Sun hotel group, and discovering his true love for training and developing the young chefs of tomorrow. His exploits with both the SA Chefs Association (SACA) and holding the lofty title of President and Honorary Life President of the World Association of Chefs (WACS) are well documented through witty and engaging anecdotes. His never-give-up approach after being totally struck down in mid-career saw him bounce back against all odds and Billy is as mentally lively and strong today as ever, despite the daily setbacks of quadriplegia. This is a story of courage, tenacity and raw guts set against the backdrop of a remarkable industry in which colleagues become family, and family remains the inner core that holds it all together.

By Alison Julie Bond Must read for all those who work in the culinary industry around the globe, especially young aspiring chefs. Bill is and always will be a inspa ration to myself and what clearly came across in the book is the fact that he is dedicated to helping those in need. My thought of Bill is his ability to draw in and win the confidence of all on his team, never will forget him calling me, Son, just eight years older than me, but he had won my loyalty. Definitely an eye opener and in many instances though provoking

The Lives of Robert Ryan provides an inside look at the gifted, complex, intensely private man whom Martin Scorsese called “one of the greatest actors in the history of American film.” The son of a Chicago construction executive with strong ties to the Democratic machine, Ryan became a star after World War II on the strength of his menacing performance as an anti-Semitic murderer in the film noir Crossfire. Over the next quarter century he created a gallery of brooding, neurotic, and violent characters in such movies as Bad Day at Black Rock, Billy Budd, The Dirty Dozen, and The Wild Bunch. His riveting performances expose the darkest impulses of the American psyche during the Cold War.At the same time, Ryan’s marriage to a liberal Quaker and his own sense of conscience launched him into a tireless career of peace and civil rights activism that stood in direct contrast to his screen persona. Drawing on unpublished writings and revealing interviews, film critic J.R. Jones deftly explores the many contradictory facets of Robert Ryan’s public and private lives, and how these lives intertwined in one of the most compelling actors of a generation.

The Lives of Robert Ryan (Wesleyan Film), by J.R. Jones

Review “As self-effacing yet as solid and as ethically engaged as Robert Ryan himself, J.R. Jones offers a comprehensive and sensitive chronicle of one of the giants of American movie acting.” (Jonathan Rosenbaum, author of Movie Wars)“Too many critical biographies lurch back and forth between biography and criticism. Jones weaves the criticism in the biographical fabric, and the finished product has a very friendly mien―The Lives of Robert Ryan is a book you will want to spend time with.” (Kent Jones, author of Physical Evidence: Selected Film Criticism)“J.R. Jones’s meticulous, revealing book on Robert Ryan places the actor’s life and career against the turbulent politics of the Cold War and the Red Scare in Hollywood. Jones is especially adept at moving between the life and the work, the films and their contexts. He introduces political history throughout, in ways that are both relevant and revelatory.” (Foster Hirsch, author of The Dark Side of the Screen: Film Noir)“The Lives of Robert Ryan is a well-written, insightful biography on an important Hollywood actor who is finally getting the attention he deserves. Ryan was a fearless liberal who embraced controversial causes during a time when most Hollywood stars remained apolitical. Even many film scholars are unaware of this aspect of Ryan’s career. This biography emphasizes it.” (Richard B. Jewell, author of RKO Radio Pictures: A Titan is Born)

About the Author J.R. Jones is an award-winning film critic and editor for the Chicago Reader. His writing has appeared in New York Press, Kenyon Review, Da Capo Best Music Writing, and Noir City. He lives in Chicago.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Great resource on a great actor By CJS Well researched bio of underrated actor Robert Ryan who excelled in films such as Crossfire, The Naked Spur, The Set-Up, and Bad Day at Black Rock. The book has an extensive bibliography and the author took pains to interview not only Ryan's three children but those who worked with him and knew both Ryan and his talented wife Jessica. Ryan's wife was a writer and some of her material was used in the book. The author goes over each film but does not bore us with interminable summaries of the film but let's us know Ryan's contribution and thoughts about the part. There were quite a few things that I had not previously known about Ryan, i.e. he served in the Marines but saw no combat and he and his wife started a private school and actually built the building. Ryan is portrayed as a private individual who cared deeply about his wife and was at a loss after her death. The book has plenty of photographs and a nice filmography. I only wish the author would have followed up at the end and let us know what each of Ryan's children (and perhaps grandchildren) are doing and if any followed in either his footsteps as an actor or in their mother's footsteps as a writer.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Not A One Note Actor By G.I Gurdjieff This book was really quite interesting because Ryan to a great extent was a reclusive and private person whose work spoke for him. He was liberal both in regard to his politics and his thinking, but I don't think that either necessarily completely defined him as either a person or as an actor. As I perceived him in this book, Ryan wasn't a slave to politics or ideology because he was very much a free and independent thinker. I think he brought this aspect of his personality to the roles that he assumed as well as to his own personal philosophy of life. This book also offers glimpses into Ryan's family life and his activities away from acting. It also has a bibliography of his professional activities which were often diverse and mostly thought provoking.I particularly appreciated this book because so little information has been out there since his death in the early '70's. It was great fun to learn about Ryan, his marriage to his Quaker wife, and his family while reading this rather thorough book.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. This may be just about the best film biography I've yet to read By Andy Moursund This may be just about the best film biography I've yet to read, on many levels. It's not that long, but it's extremely instructive about Ryan's work, his marriage, his political activism, and his relationships with the film industry. There's little in the way of tabloid gossip, but there's much about the formative life experiences that helped him to develop his distinctive screen persona. Ryan's little known to the casual "old movies" buff whose knowledge begins with Casablanca and ends with The Wizard of Oz, but to steady viewers of TCM and patrons of various repertory houses, he's right up there in the pantheon with the likes of Stewart and Grant, if not for quite the same reasons. One other aspect of the Jones bio that I particularly appreciated was the constant mentioning of Ryan's wife Jessica, how they related to each other, and how their marriage survived over the years in spite of their constant separations due to his work. Towards the end of the book, Jones quotes extensively from Jessica's unpublished diaries, with passages that evoke Betty Friedan and later feminist writers. This not only helps us to a greater understanding of Ryan himself, but also suggests the possibility of a shorter separate book about Jessica Cadwalader Ryan, who herself was a much-published writer. But in any event, I couldn't recommend this book more highly. Definitely one of the best books I've read all year.

I appreciated the honesty and beauty of the author's writing style. As a heterosexual woman, there were parts that made me uncomfortable. However, I have family and friends that live with same-sex attraction, so I would say it helped me to understand them better. More importantly, I think they would relate to many of the questions Nicholas had. I think it's a book that we can all learn from.

Sanders Nicholas Deere has written a compelling story of journey out of homosexuality and into the joy of finding his true love, only to lose her tragically all too young. The story is gripping, and you can't help but see God's hand at work at every turn. Nicholas Deere is the author's pen name, and he continues to influence people around the world with his writing and ministry. Be sure to check out this gripping story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. And They Lived Happily Ever After By a reader Fifty Shades of Grace: Love Changes Everything is a beautiful love story. It’s a story that captures the headiness of falling in love, being in love, and staying in love.It has a fairy tale quality, even though it is a true story. But this isn’t the normal boy meets girl kind of story. It’s more of a boy meets boy, boy meets girl, boy meets God, kind of story. This love which Nicholas shows for Noel looks like what I imagine Ephesians 5:25 to look like: Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Although the writing is more of the Song of Solomon vein. (Whew!) But my blushes stayed to the minimum because the story unfolds in such a tender way, and it is clear Nicholas cherishes and adores Noel.At the heart of this love story, though, is God. Nicholas’ confidence in Him is breath-taking and refreshing, even when his faith is put to the test. So, I recommend you read this book if you are want to see and understand one man's journey from homosexuality to heterosexuality, or if you want to experience a sweet love story between a man and woman. But especially, I recommend you read this book if you yearn for a wider and deeper understanding of God’s power and love.

Walking on Thin Ice, a memoir of love, hate, envy, and greed traces a young woman's pursuit of stardom down a dangerous road that leads to shattered dreams and a harrowing fate.

I found myself staring down the barrel of a revolver, and a wave of disbelief rippled through me . . . An explosion blasted me into a nightmare. The room swirled slowly. Click––click. The sound reverberated each time she pulled the trigger. I realized this woman was trying to kill me!

In Walking on Thin Ice, Re'Gena Bell-Roberts shares her riveting story against the backdrop of a childhood sexual molestation. She is one, among a few young girls from the small town of Pasco, Washington, who harbored dreams of fame, fortune, and a craving for the love of a powerful man.

After high school graduation, Re'Gena's life transforms. Despite myriad warnings, she falls for the charming Max Clayton, a thirty-three year old streetwise hustler who entices her into a dark underworld of illicit sex and drugs.

When Max betrays her, their life takes a fateful turn. The gripping saga explodes in the Mount Baker area of Seattle, Washington; and depicts Re'Gena's struggle to deal with a tragic life-changing event that threatens her very existence. But she fights back with unshakable strength, courage, and a will to survive.

By Suzie Lepka After attending Re'Gena's book signing party in Pasco, WA.,I was given the opportunity to visit with her and meet the person behind the story. I read her book shortly thereafter, my husband had read it earlier, and by the time i finished I was in awe of this remarkable women. Against tremendous odds, hardships, challenges, and horrendous obstacles, Re'Gena beat the worst of the worst experiences and tragedies one person should ever have to face and came out the other side a strong, vibrant, beautiful person. Her life was not any easy life, the heartbreaking childhood she endured and the challenges she faced after being shot and paralyzed were insurmountable, yet with the her strong faith in God, the love and help of those who love and loved her, Re'Gena was able to beat the odds and bring herself out of the fog of pain and despair to raise her three beautiful children up to remarkable adults, while still learning to adjust to a new normal way of life in a wheel chair with minimal mobility. I was humbled and very honored to be able to meet and spend some time with this remarkable women. She is such an inspiration, such a positive individual who turned tragedy into triumph. Her book was well written and took me on an emotional roller coaster as I found myself walking beside her as she shared her journey. I would encourage anyone to read her story, it certainly had an impact on my life.

'This is a book about the human aspects of life on the land - the stories of success and failure, life and love, of hardship and celebration - and the passion and gritty determination that characterised every family I interviewed.'

Author Deb Hunt sets out to discover what makes what makes Australian farming families tick. She travels tens of thousands of kilometres to properties at either end of the country, from a vast, dusty cattle run in outback Queensland to the wheat belt of Western Australia and dairy and sheep farms in Tasmania. She introduces us to eight families who survive, even thrive, on the land despite fires, floods, personal hardship and uncertain economic times. We see a different sort of family life, where the kids are expected to pitch in, the classroom is often the kitchen table, the nearest maternity hospital is a five-hour drive, and generations live and work side by side. We meet the French family, whose connection to the bush goes back seven generations, Philip the Philosopher, who by 29 was managing a property of more than one million hectares carrying 20,000 head of cattle, and the outspoken Roma Brittnell, who was awarded Australian Rural Woman of the Year in 2009.

Inspiring, moving and sometimes challenging, these stories provide a window into a way of life that defines the Australian spirit at its best.

The Indian-Malay cycle, to which "I misteri della Jungla Nera" ("The Black Jungle's Mysteries") belongs, is an exciting series of adventures set in colonial India and Malaya/Borneo. The written language, a sort of formal Italian of the 19th century, may sound a bit archaic to present-day readers but poses no real problem to the full understanding of the text and to the reader's full involvement in the adventures of the various heroes and villains. Reading the whole series is highly recommended. As a final comment as an adult, I must say that reading Salgari's books once more after 35-40 years is a real pleasure.

This is a bit of Americana that has rarely been told. Living in an isolated married student housing project while husbands attended college on the G.I. Bill is not what it seemed. The year? 1948. The wives. Often faceless. Here are a few of their stories.... (More about the book) Wives of Copeley Hill are definitely part of the American phenomenon that shaped them into the June Cleavers of the future. Patient, pretty, long-suffering and stalwart and undemanding is enough to back their husbands wishes without question: and be forever the perfect mother in frilly aprons and high heels. But because returning soldiers are heroes and America adores them, we were often burdened with the true reality of half-developed husbands who grew up in fox holes. And now they were being shaped into the tycoons and monied stars of the future through education. The wives often sacrificed everything…the men often gained the total dream that was theirs alone.

About the Author "Although I have written and attended creative writing workshops for 30 years, this is my first firm resolve to 'get on with it' and get published. I attended Columbia University, studied metal sculpting and jazz piano, and later studied floral design in London, developing a successful design business that I directed for over 25 years. In between, I write." (More about the author's life) As a southern woman born along the Mississippi in the roaring 20s -1924 to be exact-there are memories of having moss and delta smells and reminders to “be a lady” from my Mamma. Reminders were set in place by 3 older brothers:not to cry, to be brave, and oh Lordy!… yodel like Tarzan when reaching the highest limbs of a tree. My grandmother, Victory, undid some of that by allowing me into her pink french music room or to play among the carved gargoyles that held up a huge dinning room table. Then a depression A war Marriage and children Then, divorce 26 years later. (the usual) The unusual of my life was traveling around the world, leading art tours to Europe, moving to the Fan in Richmond, Va. Restoring a home, owning a business, para-sailing, snowmobiling, and being happy—or unhappy. Both made me who I am. A writer.

By otterfly7 I really enjoyed getting to know this small piece of history on some gutsy ladies in post WWII Charlottesville, VA.I, too, was a Law School Wife (in the next generation, Richmond VA) and could relate to everything from the Virginia Gentleman to the pot luck dinners/picnics at the end of the paycheck! Those were (as it has been said) the worst (poorest) of times; those were the best (most fun and memorable) of times! We made it through the three years of stress on soup nights (everybody bring what's left in the fridge & we'll make soup), cheap wine and playing Charades. Our furnishings were grandma's attic or thrift store, our car was old but paid for.The part about the Korean War was a new bit of history for me....what a shock....to survive one war to be called up again before you can even get through school or get past the last one. (My family missed serving in the Korean War, but has served in most of the others!)I received the book at 7pm yesterday and finished it before I would go to bed!Write another one!

I personally know the author and yet learned so much from reading the story of her journey with mental illness while trusting in the Lord as she experienced the twists and turns that life brings. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a loved one; or who may be dealing with mental illness personally.

Underwood, Jr. Myron Burse was my karate instructor for several years and I eventually earned my black belt under him. I never really knew much about his personal life outside of karate classes until I read his book. It took a lot of courage to expose so much of himself.

The son of a white man and Cherokee slave, Joseph Willis, gains his freedom and swims the mighty Mississippi on a mule. There, he preaches the first Gospel sermon by an Evangelical west of the Mississippi River. From master storyteller, Randy Willis...a book about adventure, family, faith and the character of a man that touched generations.Joseph Willis' life is a story of triumph over tragedy and victory over adversity!  ✯ He was born into slavery. His mother was Cherokee and his father a wealthy English plantation owner.  ✯ His family took him to court to deprive him of his inheritance (which would have made him the wealthiest plantation owner in all of Bladen County, North Carolina in 1776). ✯ He fought as a Patriot in the Revolutionary War under the most colorful of all the American generals, Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox. ✯ His first wife died in childbirth, and his second wife died only six years later, leaving him with five small children. ✯ He crossed the mighty Mississippi River at Natchez at the peril of his own life, riding a mule! ✯ He entered hostile Spanish-controlled Louisiana Territory, when the dreaded Code Noir (Black Code) was in effect. It forbade any Protestant ministers who came into the territory from preaching. ✯ His life was threatened because of the message he brought to Spanish-controlled Louisiana! ✯ His own denomination refused to ordain him because of his race. ✯ Joseph Willis preached the first Gospel sermon by an Evangelical west of the Mississippi River. ✯ After overcoming insurmountable obstacles, he blazed a trail for others for another half-century that changed American history.  ✯ His accomplishments are still felt today. Randy Willis is a fourth great-grandson of Joseph Willis and his foremost historian. threewindsblowing.com

By Doris Very interesting, as Joseph Willis was the founding father of the Baptist Church I grew up attending. It was believed that the Church I attended was the oldest Church West of the Mississippi River that Rev. Joseph Willis had organized.

In MEANT TO BE, author Roslyn Franken reveals the unforgettable true story of her parents, John and Sonja Franken - two unlikely survivors of World War II. While John, a young Dutch naval recruit in the Dutch East Indies, is captured at sea by the Japanese and must fight for his life as a POW, Sonja is taken by the Nazis from her home in The Netherlands to endure the horrors of Auschwitz and a series of other Holocaust concentration camps. Remarkably, John survives the Nagasaki atomic bomb and miraculously, Sonja escapes death in the gas chambers on three separate occasions. After suffering endless tests of faith and fortitude at the hands of their brutal captors, the war ends and the two are brought together in the most extraordinary of circumstances to rebuild their lives as one based on love, trust and commitment. When Sonja is diagnosed with cancer and John suffers a massive heart attack, they triumph once again by calling on the same daring and determination that allowed them to survive the war. When diagnosed with cancer at 29, Roslyn turns to her parents’ examples of daring and determination as inspiration in her own fight to beat cancer and become a long-term survivor. How did John and Sonja survive their captivity? How did they meet to find enduring love? What did Roslyn learn from her parents that can help us all live better lives? The answers to these questions and more are what make up the powerful story of MEANT TO BE. MEANT TO BE will capture your heart, uplift your spirit and open your mind to new possibilities, leaving you both spellbound and wonderfully inspired with universal messages on how to live a better life and make our world a better place.

This book is a gem, and it was so compelling that I just couldn't put it down until I reached the last page! It is clear this book is written from the heart – utterly inspiring and encouraging, and at times teary. After reading “Meant To Be” I am in awe of the unyielding strength and resilience of the human spirit demonstrated by this couple - they overcame such horrific and life-altering experiences, yet they came out on the other side with grace, dignity, and a commitment to love not only each other, but life and everyone they touched.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's about love! Since reading this book By Suzie Epelbaum-Lazar This book is about the strength of the human spirit when forced to endure war time atrocities and physical hardships - slavery, starvation & humiliation. It's about controlling your thoughts and altering your perspective to help you cope with horrific surroundings. This book is about hope! It's about love! Since reading this book, I have been noticing the miracles that surround me everyday. Roslyn, thank you for documenting your parent's experiences. Their stories must be told!

I could not imagine ever reading a book about WW II, Concentration Camps and Japan POWs with such intense interest. Roslyn has narrated her parents true stories with a sense of realism and drawing lessons in every one of their horrific experiences. Wow to author's pen(wo)manship! It's been a while since a book has captivated me such as MEANT TO BE did. What an experience! I would never imagine that I could read those horrific stories of Sonja's and John's ordeals without feeling depressed. In fact, in each story, the author has highlighted lessons and the wisdom inherent in each of their experiences. I found MEANT TO BE a spiritual treatise on life. This book has lessons galore on how to face challenges and adversities in life with hope and a strong will to live. Roslyn has narrated the stories in a simple yet compelling writing style. I just never felt like putting the book down.MEANT TO BE is a delight to read. You'll draw much wisdom of life and get tips on how to live a purposeful and meaningful life.
