America would be very different if William Harding Jackson (1901– 1971) had not put his indelible stamp on the Us government as Oss / War Department chief of secret intelligence in World War Ii Europe, cofounder of today's Central Intelligence Agency, and his work as Eisenhower's national security adviser. During the most dangerous times in our history and for decades beyond his death, there is no other American who influenced so many sensitive, top-secret national security matters more than Jackson. When Bill Jackson was in the room, everyone paid attention; and for a time in our history, three Us presidents saw to it-personally.

Jackson, there may, of course, be a certain bias in my reaction to Vic Currier's ground-breaking book. I, nevertheless, believe that, from a family point of view, we have learned a great deal of new information about our father and grandfather's military and intelligence roles which his reticence in discussing the war and the demands of secrecy have kept hidden for seventy years. From a general reader's perspective, there is documented new information, much of it from newly declassified documents, on the monumental struggle in late 1942 to overturn flawed US Navy anti-submarine doctrine and move the focus of operations from the US coast to the Bay of Biscay where German U-boats could be identified and destroyed as they exited or entered submarine pens along the French coast. To effect this change, Jackson had to go over the head of US Navy CNO Admiral King, who ordered that all copies of Jackson's memorandum and recommendations be destroyed, and make the case directly to Secretary of War Stimson, his Chief of Staff Forrestal, and General Hap Arnold of the Army Air Group. Until that time, Navy propaganda had falsely claimed success against the U-boats while, in reality, the Germans had enjoyed almost total control of the Atlantic for five years. Within a year of the Bay of Biscay decision, 500 German submarines had been sunk, ending the Battle of the Atlantic. Vic Currier, therefore, deserves great credit for researching and presenting substantially new information on a major decision that affected the outcome of World War II. Richard L. Jackson

By Vic Currier Belle Meade's William Harding Jackson was the last heir (at age 2) of the Belle Meade mansion, plantation, and stud farm discussed in Ridley Wills's history. Jackson attended Princeton and Harvard Law, worked in War Department secret intelligence during WW-II, helped develop the Securities Exchange Act and the National Security Act, was instrumental in formation of the National Security Council, the CIA, and served as Eisenhower's national security adviser. Bill Jackson was a remarkable American, indeed. But his story was kept top-secret, the details of which were hidden from his friends and family for more than 40-years after his death. Declassified documents about the man are just now beginning to surface in government archives. (Photo shows Jackson on far left side during Gen. George C Marshall's front line war briefing in October 1944) As Tex McCrary & Jinx Falkenburg once wrote about their friend Bill Jackson for the NY Times in 1950 -- "The Kremlin knows who he is ...maybe its time the American public knew him, too!"

History Changing Book By denise a parker I recall Chet Huntley in 1971 announcing the death of Bill Jackson on the national evening news and that was the last we ever heard about this remarkable man until now. Secrets were kept secret in order to protect our great nation. History changing read!
