If you didn't know her, Mary Varick's theology might well have seemed nuts. After all, she insisted that God's greatest gifts included pain, denial, suffering, and sacrifice. Likely because those she served and helped bring to God were frequently blessed with these. Handicapped, Mary Varick had a great husband, four children, and a wonderful life that was threatened by a ravaging bone cancer. In the annals of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, just north of Quebec City, you can read about the miracle that sent that cancer back to the abyss on July 21, 1951. But here, you'll read about the second thirty-seven years of her life-the relentless sojourn of an unabashed pilgrim, determined to bring others, especially her disabled "God's inner circle," to joy, grace, and God.

A Tribute to an Unconquerable Soul Living out a Theology of Dignity, Innate Self-Worth. and Compassion By Quin Dwyer This book tells the real-life story of Mary Varick: struck with polio at 16 months of age, and with a grim diagnosis of bone cancer at 36. In 1951, Mary, her husband, and older brother borrowed a car, taking off to pray at the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre shrine in Quebec, Canada. Upon her return, her cancer was gone. In 1960, Mary and her husband Bill organized the Our Lady of Fatima First Saturday Club, which meets the first Saturday of each month to this day. On the first Saturday in August, the meeting generally involves a trip/pilgrimage concluding at Catholic shrines in Canada. It is a simple, from-the-grounds-up affair, with volunteers pushing wheelchairs, hauling stretchers, and generally attending to the disabled travelers. While this is all very Catholic, First Saturday is open to all.Author Fritzky tells the story through personal reminiscence (she is his aunt), historical research, and the testimony of many, living and departed, impacted by this ministry. How did she become such an energizing, forceful presence for dignity to the disabled? How, facing so many disadvantages (polio, poverty, societal attitudes of disdain towards the disabled), was she able to overcome great odds, successfully raising funds for trips to Canada, Lourdes, Rome, and even Communist Russia? She had a vision requiring, to be realized, the overcoming of many challenges and attitudes -- in a world with few if any handicapped access lanes. Imagine getting an airline to charter a trip for dozens of people in wheelchairs and stretchers -- in the 1960s! Imagine talking atheist U.S.S.R into allowing her group to land in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), to pray in a virtually abandoned Cathedral? This is a person, mortgaged to the hilt to supplement the budget for her charitable efforts, who chose to share her husband's life insurance proceeds to spend on gifts for the poor in the Holy Land. She saw herself as having much, when others may say she had little, in terms of health, wealth and higher education.Varick's extended family is still involved with First Saturday, even 25+ years of so after her passing. Like many who joined in, they were caught up in a humble passion, a fervent hope, and an unfashionable purpose: offer moments of service to society's outcasts, while tapping unknown resources within to exceed one's capabilities, somehow, many times over.A number of testimonials submitted in behalf of Mary Varick, documenting her faith, her good works, and even health-related miracles, are narrated. It looks like these are submitted in consideration of status as blessed or saint. Testimony includes a letter from Mother Theresa, who had befriended Mary around 1971. This book covers some of their correspondence, encounters, and shared interests. One gets the real sense of the humble person she was, before fame transformed her image.Interestingly, author Fritzky was first introduced to this world as a teenage volunteer on Varick's Canada trips. Ravaged by a sudden bacterial illness, he became the first person to ever recover -- but at great cost to his physical constitution. Now, he is on the other side of the wheelchair. It's as if he's been somehow spared to share this story. This book has somewhat of an oral history quality to it. By helping us know Mary Varick, we get to understand her "theology" of dignity, innate self-worth, and the blessings and awareness of setting aside seeing ourselves as the center of the universe. In summary, this book provides me with a needed corrective when my thoughts veer towards self-pity, self-indulgence, and to negative self-talk that no person makes a difference, why bother trying. I recommend reading this tribute to this unconquerable soul, and to hope and dignity. Here is to the possibility that those flawed souls among us, myself included, can find ourselves as useful as Mary Varick and her unlikely band of spiritual volunteers.
