Frost As a physician and perennial ice hockey fan, there aren’t enough words to express my support and satisfaction for the recent focus on the incidence of concussions in contact sports, as well as for the resources directed toward prevention and proper management of these traumatic brain injuries. This new found heightened awareness of sports related concussions has given rise to real dialog that has led to better protective equipment, significant rule changes to help mitigate dangerous types of contact, and the institution of protocols to keep head-injured athletes from reentering competitions too soon. Among all these efforts is Harry Kerasidis, M.D., a highly respected and well-recognized cognitive neurologist who specializes in the impairment of cognitive and emotional performance resulting from concussions. And with over 25 years of clinical experience managing patients who have suffered from concussions, Dr. Kerasidis is no neophyte to this field. In addition to his vast clinical experience, Dr. Kerasidis has cofounded XLNTbrain LLC, the first complete concussion management program for all sports and levels. This program can be delivered online and through a mobile app. Dr. Kerasidis has also served as an expert panelist at the #C4CT Concussion Summit at New York’s United Nations building, where the greatest minds in sports concussions and brain trauma gathered to share the latest science, research, and new products available to protect athletes from harm. And now Dr. Kerasidis offers his groundbreaking book, Concussion-ology: Redefining Sports Concussion Management For All Levels, to further advance the understanding and management of this complex issue that historically has been too readily ignored and dismissed by far too many. In his book, Dr. Kerasidis reveals some of his own motivations for entering this field, as he begins with his own personal narrative recounting his hospitalization with a concussion as a college freshman. Dr. Kerasidis then leads us through a tutorial on brain anatomy and function, using language that can be readily understood by readers at any level. He continues with an explanation of the mechanisms of brain injury, their sequela and their management, but doesn’t stop there. Dr. Kerasidis dives into more uncharted waters as he tackles the issue of rehabilitation as an effort to rebuild the brain and deal with the sustained symptoms beyond the initial 30 days following injury. He describes how neurofeedback techniques, migraine intervention, memory building, and nutrition all can be utilized to advance best practices in the long-term management of these injuries. In a time when even Hollywood is entering the arena to raise awareness of this issue with their soon to be released movie starring Will Smith, Dr. Kerasidis brings us this timely publication that offers practical steps to be used by athletic trainers, medical professionals, and all who may be involved in dealing with this critically important area of brain health.
