Blasted by Adversity: the Making of a Wounded Warrior documents the incredible ascendance of an Army infantryman who survived an IED blast, amputating his right leg and severing his left, and emerged as a key public advocate for wounded veterans. Luke Murphy's injury was the beginning of a remarkable journey that took him from hopelessness in a hospital room to skiing black diamonds in Aspen, catching tuna on Jimmy Buffet’s boat and speaking to thousands at the Pentagon. The book gives voice to a new generation of wounded service members.

Review "By far the best account of one warrior's trip to hell and back....This book should be a part of every veteran's transition back to life."―Tallahassee Democrat "With humility that belies doggedness, Luke Murphy leads readers from the stress-fueled rhythms of a soldier at war, to the blast that took his leg and the long road home from the battlefield--and the unexpected places that journey has taken him. As America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan fade from public view, Blasted by Adversity reminds us that wars don't end when the shooting stops."―Brian Mockenhaupt, former Army infantryman and Author of The Living and the Dead: War, Friendship, and the Battles that Never End “A gripping story of military life, war, and the aftermath of being severely wounded in combat... Luke’s story will touch, move, and inspire you.”―Major General USA (Ret.) Timothy P. McHale, President/CEO, Homes for Our Troops “Luke writes with such refreshing openness, it’s as if he's telling you his remarkable story over a few beers. If you need a shot of inspiration, fortify yourself with this book.”―Allan Zullo, author War Heroes: Voices from Iraq “An unflinching, brutally honest account of America’s Iraq War experience from a soldier’s point of view.”―Thom Patterson, Senior Producer, CNN “Luke, with humor, passion, and humility, tells of returning from combat to fight a different battle―the battle wounded soldiers fight to get back to a new normal, physically and mentally.”―General (Ret.) Richard A. Cody, 31st Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army “Don’t look for tragedy. Read [Blasted by Adversity] to experience combat, courage, camaraderie, pain, and recovery.”―General (Ret.) Stan McChrystal, former Commander US and International Forces in Afghanistan “Luke Murphy's story is powerful and so very real… He is a true American hero.”―COL (Ret.) Danny McKnight, U.S. Army

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Motivated soldier. Quality writer. Strong story. By Andrew Barlow I met Luke Murphy at an FSU tailgater (shortly before the referees committed the greatest public felony of all time by calling back the winning touchdown on a clearly malicious call, but that's not something that's going to get fixed in the course of this review, so I'll just let that one lie there.) His school allegiance notwithstanding, I was struck by Luke's clear eyes, positive tone and onward forward motion despite visible injuries from an IED explosion in Iraq. I pre-ordered his book then kinda forgot about it.When it showed up, I was struck by the cover whose title divided two images, the upper (of Luke hale and hearty in a combat zone) and the lower (of Luke's IED-shredded Humvee.) The book itself, then, describes the journey of a small-town Florida boy who heeded the call to serve his country and the arduous return from a serious set of wounds sustained on duty.Luke is a straightforward writer, steering clear of self-aggrandizement while providing a clear estimate of his motivation, achievements in his training, and his devotion to his brothers in arms. He is upfront about the trials he endured in the course of his rehabilitation, but his insights are couched in his fierce determination to overcome and win in any setting. Whether it's a hand-cranked bicycle race in South America or the challenge of greeting his fellow Rakkasans on their return from Iraq, Luke pushes himself to overcome and succeed.I feel like Luke has another book in him somewhere, one that perhaps deals with a little more with his take on the nature of war, the impact of public perception on individual service members, the quality of care available to combat-injured veterans and the like. I hope this book succeeds to the point he is compelled to go back to his keyboard and give us more of the good stuff.

By Linda K Harrison Luke's office is next door & we semi work together but I didn't know his story so when he showed me Blasted by Adversity I immediately ordered it. When it came in I was going to do a quick glance at it and save it for later but i couldn't put it down. I felt like we were sitting at the kitchen table over a glass of tea and he was telling me his story! My husband was Army infantry (in 70's right after Vietnam) and now I know where he got some of the sayings he uses and understand more of what he's told me about boot camp and his whole military experience. I have read Chris Kyle's story and Marcus Luttrell's story along with several others and Luke's book is every bit as good or better a read! My dad was retired Navy, my brother & husband served their country & have nephews retired and active Air Force, so we are a military family! I can't tell you how much I appreciated Luke's writing about the sacrifices families make so folks can have the quality of life we are so blessed with in this country and yet take so much for granted. The inner & physical strength Luke has shown humbles me...I feel so honored to know him. Thank you Julie for helping Luke tell his story!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. review of Luke's book By Nancy Stewart I met Luke a little over a year ago at an airport on my way to Las Vegas. He was sitting in his wheelchair eating a sandwich and I felt I was being urged to go over and talk to him- to see if he needed anything. We struck up a conversation and have stayed in touch ever since.Luke told me about the book coming out so I pre-ordered 3 copies- I couldn't put it down! It is excellent! He is an amazing patriot and awesome person. It's amazing how he has managed to make it through all of the adversity. You will smile and you will cry.I highly recommend the book- we owe these soldiers so much
