She grew up in an Army family and became an Army wife, but had little knowledge of the 15th Army Air Corps activity during World War II. This book was not only historically mesmerizing but was also a fascinating example showing the reader that one person's tenacity can make a huge dream come true for many. Thank you Gail for your four years of teaching about WWII and keeping it alive. As the one letter shared, time is trying to distort the realities of what our men did for us. These letters personally tell it like it really was. This story has so many facets that it was hard to put the book down. I have had the privilege of seeing Gail's presentation in person. This book paints a brilliant picture of the importance of keeping history alive and sharing it not only with children but experiencing it with those brave men who lived it. We tend to take our freedom for granted but this book has brought a new dimension to the saying that "freedom is not free". Thank you for sharing with us the "Black Suitcase Mystery".l

Petruso The Black Suitcase Mystery “started out as a ‘hands on’ genealogy project, but quickly escalated to a ‘heart on’ experience for all involved” from 5th graders to adults thanks to school librarian, Gail Elliot Downs. My husband and I met Gail as she was just beginning her research into the letters of the Black Suitcase. My husband helped her understand the military terminology within the letters, as well as the WW II experiences of her dad’s cousin, George Elliot Rich. Gail learned about the name of the B-24 Liberator, Purple Shaft, to riding in our 1943 half-track, Thumper. Her year by year format of research, teaching, and celebrating still allows all from 5th graders to adults to be a nation who understands, remembers, and gives thanks for our freedoms.
