Green Markos is a prolific and offbeat writer who delights her readers with witty and elegant prose. Crows and Honey is an intimate and heart-wrenching slingshot through her adolescence. A coming of age memoir that follows on the heels of her first release Green Like The Color. Her work is replete with literary hula hoops, off beat rhymes and unconventional vignette. This is the relentlessly gripping tale of one resilient spirit who is determined to twist a glittered light onto some of life’s most difficult trials.

By PHILIP DODD Earlier this year, in April, I enjoyed reading and reviewing Green Like the Color: A Memoir by Green Markos. Now, here, at the end of May, I have just finished reading her new book, Crows and Honey. Milk and honey we know from the "land of milk and honey" from The Bible, so I think the unusual pairing of the word crows and the word honey makes a good title. I like the cover of the book, too, which is like a surreal painting, designed by Amos Michael. Crows and Honey is a memoir, but not one written as others might, saying this happened, and then that happened. Rather it is one written by a poet with an ear for the sound of words, with the skill to write of her memories in a memorable way. Her mother and father, and all those she writes of, she makes to come vividly alive on the page. In her second memoir, Green Markos makes it clear how scary it was for her to be a young girl from a broken home, failed first by her father, then her mother, until she left them both, to live from place to place, job to job, alone and sometimes with her elder sister. I was impressed that in the end, her book is a celebration of life, for she always managed to see the "grandness in the grime." She has found her own style, which is good and rare. With a poet's eye, she sees the poetry in ordinary things, and is able to put down on paper the essence of those she writes about. As in her first memoir, she writes in a clear, poetic prose, which sometimes, quite naturally, flows into verse. Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee is a poetic memoir I enjoyed reading when I was a schoolboy. Green Like the Color and its sequel, Crows and Honey, are both finely written poetic memoirs, which ought really to be read together. I recommend both books to anyone who likes reading memoirs, poetry, and who wants to relearn the truth that despite it all, life is more than worth living.

Cut Open and Poured Out By Poetry4KDF I had the pleasure of crossing paths with this author earlier this year when I read her first book, Green Like the Color. As in that book, this is a tale that only she can tell. Based on her life events, "Cut open and poured out on the page" and indeed did she cut into the meat of her adolescence.Upon making the choice to leave her home with her mom, siblings and "one street preacher" she was then catapulted into a much freer life than any normal teenage should have. She captures her innocence and her rebellion perfectly. "I was learning my place in the world and experimenting with my boundary line" Many time she crossed the boundary and she tells of her failures and pitfalls with the abandon of a teen, and the wisdom of a woman. She exposes her hurt at only the age of 15 through "A Little Rain" and it goes "I planned to name her Rain/ If I had gotten the chance to hold her" -- I could feel her loss.As she tells of her various movement across the country she says "I made my home/ Anywhere I could lay my head/ And I learned to decorate my plight/ With a garden" Hauntingly beautiful!! In "Dark Hands" there is an evil that sneaks into your spine as you read the page. Although short, the words stay with you long after you close the pages. She ends with "Just my something that felt a whole lot like everything tucked right into the middle" and you know that her story is far from being finished. If she writes of more, I will be first in line to read.

Sweet and Binding Flight of a Crow with an Important View By Amazon Customer The importance of this author's creativity is aptly alluded to in the title of her book...something sticky-sweet that binds the gossamer black feathers of life's experiences together for a necessary flight in a questionable reality. I especially appreciate that the bindings of each feather of her experience glisten with an inspired glow of a creative spark we can all use in our everyday lives. So often, inspiration is something to be admired in another as unattainable and separate from myself. In the works of this author, her dedication to understanding the nuances of life's experiences that have been offered to her become building blocks of comfort in a hostile universe that rolls forward despite the innate curiosity she so wonderfully describes. Bravo...may the crow's flight become many more volumes of insight from "a life that started out just a little bit strapped down and broken."
