"Mario Lanza is one of the most astute students of the show." -Survivor: Fiji contestant Yau-Man Chan "I've read Mario's works for many years and consider him one of the foremost Survivor experts in the world." -Survivor: Amazon contestant Rob Cesternino "I think Mario needs to get a life." -Survivor: Micronesia contestant/crazy person Kathy Sleckman Mario Lanza has been one of the most popular Survivor columnists on the internet for more than fifteen years. His website that counts down the funniest moments in Survivor history, The Funny 115, to this day still has more than half a million readers. He is also the creator and one of the hosts of the popular long running podcast, The Survivor Historians. In this unique (and often irreverent) set of memoirs, Mario talks about how he got roped into the world of writing about Survivor, and what it is like to live your life as a popular internet writer. He also delves into more than seventy different essays about the history of the show, with an emphasis on the players and the events that made up the first three seasons of the historic Survivor franchise. He also makes his case for who he thinks should be inducted into the "real" Survivor Hall of Fame. No matter how much you think you know about the show, reading this book will make you into a smarter Survivor fan. Including a foreword by Rob Cesternino.

I have read many versions of what we as players did during our Survivor experience and was disappointed on the many inaccuracies By T-Bird Mario's tireless research combined with his passion of Survivor and background inPsychology and Human Behavior makes WHEN IT WAS WORTH PLAYING FOR a must read for anyone that is a fan, a future player or even a past player of Survivor.I have read many versions of what we as players did during our Survivor experience and was disappointed on the many inaccuracies. I can tell you that what Mario wrote about the Africa series was extremely spot-on. How does Mario know so much of the goings-on behind the camera without actually being there, I remembered thinking.I even learned details that I didn't know or had forgotten regarding my own series. How crazy, cool is that??!!My viewpoint from playing the game was one dimensional. It was fun, exciting and quite interesting to read his account as a Survivor "enthusiast" . Standing out for me in the book were the interactions and dealings between the players, behind the scene details and the "what if" scenarios that would have not only changed the end game result but quite possibly the way we see the Survivor franchise as a whole. The love that Mario feels toward his Survivor "Baby" can be felt from the very first page up until the last. It has taken him years to compile his facts before publishing due to the admiration and respect he feels toward this amazing, delicious, much talked about, world renowned, often imitated but NEVER duplicated social study in Psychology called SURVIVOR.As a huge fan myself I appreciate his attention to detail, his clever and wonderful dry sense of humor combined with his direct, ''no-holds-barred'' outspoken opinion. Agree or disagree with him matters not because his fascinating interpretation and expert view of Survivor will keep you wanting more. I challenge each of you to read this compelling book and say there was nothing you learned that you didn't already know... impossible. You will also think a little differently once you've finished the book as you watch each series play out because you will not just see what the producers show you each week but you will look deeper into what you are NOT seeing.Thank you, Mario, for compiling all your expert knowledge on Survivor into this amazing book. I can't wait for your next installment. So until, TOMORROW - although hopefully... ONLY A DAY AWAY ;)Much Respect,Teresa "T-Bird" CooperSurvivor Africa

The CBS show was revolutionary television and it set the blueprint that other reality competition shows would follow when it first premiered in the summer of 2000. Thirty seasons later, Survivor is still on- still raking in at least some ten million viewers per a season. However, some fans think the show has changed over the years- focusing more on the strategic element of the game instead of the survival aspect. Despite the show’s many changes, the fan base remains fairly loyal. Still, there are just some people who prefer the old school seasons. Author Mario Lanza would be one of these people. In his book, When It Was Worth Playing For, Lanza shares his memories of Survivor during its first three seasons and explains the impact it left on television. Lanza’s name might sound familiar to some Survivor fans (and no, it’s not because he shares the name of a dead opera singer). From 2001 to 2005, Lanza was a Survivor writer for the website Survivor-Central. Lanza is also the author of the Funny 115, a series of two lists that celebrate the funniest moments in Survivor history. Lanza also co-hosts the podcast Survivor Historians, in which he and his co-hosts discuss each season of Survivor from the historical perspective. It’s safe to say that Lanza is well versed in the show. In his book, Lanza shares his memories and opinions of the first three seasons of Survivor- Borneo, The Australian Outback and Africa. Interwoven within Lanza’s memories are stories about what was going on in his life at that point and how he tried to be recognized as a Survivor writer. When Borneo first aired in 2000, people were hooked to all of the characters. Lanza does an excellent job at explaining how people were thinking of the show at that time and what the general consensus of each season was overall. For example, the Tagi alliance of Richard, Kelly, Rudy and Sue were thought to be the bad guys as forming alliances was thought of as cheating. It might sound silly but Lanza tries to give the reader the idea of what people were thinking then. Along with his memories of each season, Lanza gives readers the lowdown of what was going on behind the scenes. Some of the things he touches upon are now somewhat forgotten. In his essays, Lanza makes some good arguments. For example, he has chapters devoted to how each winner was able to winner their season and what it meant for the franchise. He even brings up how much of an impact 9/11 had on the show, which I personally found to be one of the most interesting chapters. If you’ve read Lanza’s Funny 115 lists, you’ll know that Lanza has a great sense of humor. Throughout the book, I found myself laughing at some of his stories- whether it be something that was going on in his life or an interaction he had with a Survivor contestant. The only problem I had with this book was the book’s length. At some 450 pages, Lanza’s book is quite a lengthy read. Sometimes, I felt Lanza probably went on for too long in one chapter or essay. However, I will say this: the length of this book shows the passion Lanza has for Survivor. It’s quite remarkable. With that being said, I would highly recommend Lanza’s book to any Survivor fan. People who watched the show all those years ago might be able to relate with this book. As for people who got into the show later, it’ll give them insight as to what made this show successful in the first place. If you’re a Survivor fan, I’m sure you’ll love this book…but not in a homosexual way, that’s for sure.

In this book, he gets to share his unique insight on the show and all of its highs and lows (especially the lows) with his distinctly funny, insightful, and occasionally even a little crazy style. In addition to his thoughts on the early years he shares some of the strange stories that come with the territory of being one of the biggest fan writers about the show in its early years. Will this book change your life? Maybe, maybe not. But you will probably laugh, you may even cry, and you might even learn a thing or two about one of the biggest shows in television history from one of its biggest experts not on CBS' payroll (and trust me when I say this book earns a LOT from that point).
