When Allan Rutherford is found, fallen, his head cracked open, Beldon Magna is devastated. More unsettling still, a child’s mask had been left over his face, a wide smile upon it. DI Calderwood and DS Bulmer, leading the investigation, are as unnerved as the locals. Before they can solve it, another body is found; like the doctor’s, it is staged in a gruesome parody of a nursery rhyme, upon a tuffet and riddled with spiders. One thing is clear: one of Beldon Magna’s own residents is responsible. The hunt is on… As the village tries to go about normal life, idle gossip reveals that there are plenty secrets people are trying to hide. Desmond Appleby and his partner Gwilym, end up the inadvertent sleuths once more, and may be able to give the police the break they need. Will they be able to convince the police of their theory before the killer strike again? Or will more people fall victim to the Nursery Rhyme Murders…? It did a good job of setting the "English village" tone with a few nasty or unpleasant characters thrown in to spice up the plot. This is not to say the actual murders aren't rather gory, but the blood-and-guts aspect is thankfully short lived. The nursery rhyme connection seemed a tad contrived but all right. The explanation was a bit of a letdown. While no biggie for me, the main "amateur detectives" are gay in case there are readers whom this might offend. The British seem to use apostrophes differently than is required in American English. Over the years, I have simply accepted that one side of the pond will always view some issues differently than the other especially with plurals, possessives and contractions. Regardless, there were only a couple of errors that popped out at me: "dependant," "who's mother spent..." and "it's heavily laden boughs." Not a big problem though.

I guessed the murderer, but wasn't sure of the motive. Desmond and Gwilym are terrific. I like Calderwood too, but am lukewarm on Bulmer. It was a quick read about a scenic village with a murderous secret.
