Patricia Woodard had always wanted to live and work in a foreign country, but the dream seemed to be elusive. Then in the summer of 1975 while she was teaching summer school in her hometown of Whiteville, North Carolina, she received a telegram offering her a teaching position in Bogotá, Colombia. Excited and stunned to finally be realizing her dream, she accepted the offer and set off for a year high on a plateau in the Andes Mountains. Several years later, she returned to Colombia, this time to teach in sunny Cali, and along the way realized she had fallen in love with the country and its people. Twice Colombia shares the realities of being an expatriate in a developing country during turbulent political times, and the pleasures of discovering a foreign culture. From the capital city of Bogotá to the lively city of Cali, she not only embraced the country but eventually adopted a child there. Her excursions included a trip down the Amazon River, where she learned a novel way to open a bottle of wine, an Andean music festival featuring traditional music played on traditional instruments, indulgence in the succulent Colombian cuisine and weekends with Colombian friends who welcomed her unconditionally to their country. Throughout, she gives the reader a view of a country that few Americans have experienced firsthand.

About the Author Patricia L. Woodard lived and worked in Bogotá, Colombia, and Cali, Colombia, as a high school teacher in private schools for over two and a half years. Now retired, she lives in New Bern, North Carolina. She hopes to return to Colombia on a permanent basis in the future.

Review for Twice Colombia By Willie Marlowe Comparable to Eat, Pray, Love --in the scope of a young woman's international travels and romance, Patricia Woodard's Twice Colombia is a sparkling memoir, immediate, and heartfelt. The reader is right there each step of the way from the arrival of the telegram inviting her on this adventure to following her path from Bogota to Cali. Through her wonderful cinematic descriptions of the culture, the people, and the geography, I could feel the misty atmosphere of the Andes and the warmth of the deep and lasting friendships that she made.Woodard has written a special book that will be important to anyone who longs to experience another culture. It is also an individual account of those turbulent years in Colombian history, told up-close and personal. The thing about writing an engaging memoir is that one has lived the life on the pages - and writing it brings it all back - all the parts. She is very brave to share this compelling story.This book was purchased from Amazon on 2/13/2011 - just as soon as it was available!

If you've never traveled to Bogota or Cali, you can almost claim you have after reading this amazing memoir. Patricia's experiences of her travels to both places to teach math include a most informative and delightful look at the people, their culture, and the gorgeous countryside. Many adventures including a South American re-creation of an American Thanksgiving, a trip down the Amazon, and a first hand picture of living and dining with the locals are just a few of many fascinating episodes Patricia describes. It's no surprise that she plans to return! Looking forward to the next book...This is one read you will thoroughly enjoy!!!

I remember when she went to Colombia to teach, but I never imagined what it was like for her. I just pictured her in the classroom every day!I like to travel and expose myself to other cultures, and reading her story made me feel as if I were right there with her. It was so hard for me to put the book down once I got into it. I felt as if I went with her on every jaunt!I highly recommend this to anyone who'd like to take an "armchair trip" to another country and get the most out of it!
