This collection of personal stories reveals just how powerfully one man's present has been shaped by the richness of his past. Following his parents' divorce in segregated pre-Castro Miami in the late 1950s, Peter Rupert Lighte moved with his fragile mother to New York City, where he was raised amidst a community of eccentric and loving relatives and friends. In Host of Memories, he shares tales of his early years as an awkward "only child"; his Jewish roots; his fortuitous encounters with Chinese culture; his embrace of sexuality; life in Beijing, London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo; dreams of fatherhood; and much more. He ultimately finds his future husband--a distinguished English composer--and, together with their two adopted daughters, a sense of belonging.

Review Lighte, a longtime Sinophile and J.P. Morgan banker, exploits both meanings of the title by taking on the role of solicitous tour guide--"As a hospitable host in this room, I will give a guided tour of its interior"--while curating his impressively detailed memories like precious artifacts... Lively, evocative autobiographical essays." --Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover "I couldn't put down... Host of Memories until I had finished it."  --Alison Klayman, director, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry"Lighte tells stories that are often funny, frequently touching, and always tied together by his irreverent perspective, empathy, and quick wit." --Timothy Massad, lawyer, Washington, DC"An utterly charming book... Perfect bedtime reading." --Anne-Marie Slaughter, president/CEO of the New America Foundation and professor emerita at Princeton University

With great relish he expounds on Jewish holidays By Alice Renouf Having known Peter Lighte my entire adult life because of our long connection to all things China I really thought I knew the man. Hardly! Reading his Host of Memories opened new vistas into his remarkable, unusual and always compelling life. Peter has always been interested in the human condition---his own and the rest of the worlds which make his Memories go way beyond the deeply personal to connect with the universal threads that make us human. With great relish he expounds on Jewish holidays, feasts, divorce, friendship, and love and rejection of equal ferocity. Readers will pine for an Aunt Marcy in their life. Peter is a remarkable writer because every vignette builds with tension so that you really don’t want to put the book down. It appears that he has lived his adult life uptown having attended the most elite universities, and having lived in the great capitols of the world hanging out with diplomats and dignitaries but the warmth and humanity of the book from the ground level up is what makes it so appealing as a moveable feast of memories.

By Evelyne Klein I thoroughly enjoyed this book: vividly descriptive, it made me laugh out loud numerous times – the chapter on “Helmut and the Turkey” is hilarious; it made me feel sad at other times (Aunt Gussie and vignettes of family life); and it made me research and learn things I never heard of, or knew very little about : the I Ching (or YiJing); Edmund Husserl and phenomenology; and lots more.Despite the author’s impressive credentials and fascinating experiences, the book is written in a down-to earth, witty and self-deprecating style, relating meetings with Pearl Buck, Gardner Tewksbury, Searle Bates, J.Lossing Buck, and many other icons of civilization. (And a humorous encounter with Lauren Bacall, among others!!)So enjoyable a book, I am ordering copies to give to friends who willsurely relate to and delight in reading it!

And his host of memories is truly remarkable. How can anyone remember the myriad of details of events from early childhood on? He can, and these memories tell us much about how his life evolved to make him the person he is today. These are vignettes, not short stories, but the emotions they explore touch you as they recall your own memories. Once started, you cannot put this book down.
