About the Author Ingrid Croce is an artist, entrepreneur, restauranteur, singer-songwriter, and the author of Thyme in a Bottle, an autobiographical cookbook, The Jim Croce Anthology songbook, The San Diego Restaurant Cookbook, and Photographs and Memories—Recipes from Croce's Restaurant & Jazz Bar (crocesparkwest.com). She lives in San Diego and is married to her coauthor.Jimmy Rock is a musician, writer, and attorney.

Seeking the Real Jim Croce By Beachcomber Those who know and love Jim Croce will be hard-pressed to find him in this biography by his former singing partner/wife. The portrayal of Jim in these pages is almost unrecognizable as the man known as a gentle, kind, sensitive man and a fine human being. I wouldn't want to read a whitewash that makes him look perfect, but this book, which, ironically, the author calls a "love story," goes to the opposite extreme.In her earlier book "Thyme in a Bottle" the author said this biography was originally written in the '80s but was put aside until she felt ready to tell Jim's story. She said then that she wanted everyone to know what a good man Jim was -- smart, generous, kind, and giving. She also said that Jim was very private and would have hated having his life exposed, which was part of why she decided not to publish the book at that time. Well, Jim would REALLY hate what she has done to him in this version. The author veers repeatedly between professing her love for Jim and portraying him as selfish, abusive, and controlling. She seems to be trying to make herself look like a virtuous, blameless victim and make Jim look like a complete jerk. Neither portrayal is at all believable.Using extensive imaginary dialogues which are presented as fact, the author belittles and ridicules Jim and many of his friends. Tommy West and Terry Cashman, Jim's producers and friends who made him a star, are treated scathingly. Subtle but acidic digs are leveled at many of Jim's other friends and even his family. Even Maury Muehleisen, Jim's friend and lead guitarist, the musical genius who was largely responsible for the signature "Jim Croce sound," is portrayed in a dismissive, ridiculing tone. She implies that Maury's influence on Jim's music was minimal and began AFTER their first album was recorded. The facts show, however, that Jim's songwriting became more sophisticated, honest, and poetic after he and Maury met and formed a musical partnership and close friendship that lasted the rest of their lives. The cassette of songs that Jim sent to his producers in 1971 featured Maury's brilliant arrangements and lead guitar licks, inciting the producers' eagerness to record and promote Jim's new sound. All of this was ignored here, presumably due to resentment of the success Jim achieved with Maury.The last third of the book focuses on Jim's alleged abusive behavior, alleged infidelities, and alleged increasing use of drugs, almost none of which is credible. For instance, many observers note that Jim's performances remained flawless and sounded just like the album versions right up to the end. He could not have done that if he was using drugs as she describes. And after the crash, Jim's body was tested for drugs, and NONE were found. What seems to underlie this section of the book is bitterness toward Jim for moving on with his life and career without her. Although the author inherited Jim Croce's millions of hard-earned dollars and has made her living off his name for decades, apparently that isn't enough. Weirdly, she seems to want to destroy Jim's reputation as a gentle, caring man and convince the public that he was mean and abusive. It's very convenient for the author that Jim is not here to defend himself.Like the author's two previous books, this one contains incorrect dates and faulty chronology that throw into doubt the accuracy of other information. For example, she has Jim singing "I Got A Name" as an encore in Natchitoches, LA, but a tape of that performance shows that he sang that song earlier in the show and didn't do any encores. She says that Jim was finishing writing "These Dreams" and "One Less Set of Footsteps" in Oct. '72 and was ready to record his Life & Times LP by the end of '72. However, all the songs for that album had already been recorded in May, June, and August '72. She says Jim wrote and sang "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" to her after a fight in late spring '73, although in "Thyme in a Bottle" she says it was in March '73, when Rick Trow Productions was filming a documentary at their farm. But Jim actually sang that song live in concert for the first time on 11-13-72 in Cleveland, Ohio. These are just a few examples of the misinformation included here, and there are many contradictions between what she says in this book versus in her earlier books. I was left wondering what, if anything, in this biography is believable.The first half of the book is better than the rest, with lots of stories of Jim's family and his younger years, through college and the army. This section is the reason I'm giving this book two stars instead of one, because the stories help to fill in some of the blanks on Jim's pre-fame days -- assuming they're accurate. I also really liked reading Jim's letters, as they show his sensitive and poetic side developing. But this isn't the book that his fans have been waiting and hoping for.If you're looking for the real Jim Croce, listen carefully to his music and study his song lyrics, especially the three ABC/Dunhill albums. His songs about relationships are honest, and they reveal his state of mind at the time he wrote them. Most of the songs on his Life and Times LP were written in the spring and summer of '72, and many are pretty dark in tone. Listen carefully to "One Less Set of Footsteps" and "Next Time, This Time", as well as "Lover's Cross" from his '73 LP I Got A Name. Those songs alone will tell you a lot about what was really going on in Jim's life.Save your money to spend on Jim's music, and leave this book to fans of fantasy and fiction.

Interesting, but with caveats By MusicFan If you're looking for long-awaited additional details on the life of Jim Croce, you'll find them here - but they come at a price. Croce's music had a unique ability to make the listener both happy and sentimental, even on difficult subjects (see "Lover's Cross"), but after reading this book the reader may feel neither. Almost no one associated with Croce escapes critique, and everyone comes out at knocked down a notch or two - including Croce himself. While the book provides a generous amount of new details on this "overnight" success, more insight or speculation on "how" Croce matured as a songwriter into huge commercial success would have been interesting. Somehow, Croce's music reached a new level of sophistication and commercial appeal in 1970-71. Just before that, he was playing in a country bar and working as a truck driver. Was it the combination of Croce and Muehleisen's varied musical backgrounds that jelled in what has become a extremely durable music catalogue? Not much is offered in this regard. Nonetheless, the book is worth the investment though one conclusion may be that often our heroes are all too human.
19 of 23 people found the following review helpful. What a crock By M. Darling I read this book hoping to read more into JC'S spirit and beautiful songs. Instead what I read were to me a bunch of falsehoods. Perhaps Croce had his faults,( as we all do )but I had a hard time buying what the author was selling. Drug addict? Abusive? Womanizer? Madman? Maybe so, but Mr. Croce always came across in his music and storytelling as a gentle, kind person. He's no longer with us to defend himself and I'm afraid to say the book was a crock.
