0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Compelling By Anneconley This was a topic I didn't know much about but after finishing the book, my mind was blown. I still have more questions than I did when I started reading, but that's almost always the case with unsolved murders, yes? I found the writing to be straight forward newspaper style, which wasn't surprising, since it was written by reporters, duh. But it actually helped me with the book's credibility overall, as I'm usually a little leery of the 'true crime' novels that read like fiction. I'm not sure if that was purposeful or not, but the story didn't start to gel for me until the court proceedings, which just illustrated the entire process through the writing style. All of the snafus that happened during the investigation didn't come together until Tanner got a hold of it and had to make sense of it for prosecution. Anyway, my hat's off to the talented reporters who made sense of everything enough to write a compelling, factual read.

The authors really bring the characters to life and you acutely feel all the fear, heartache and outrage that they felt. I grew up not far from where it took place and had no idea how it all played out. Fascinating story!

Since picking it up, it has helped me fully redefine my habits and way of eating -- It does so also without completely forcing you to drop your ENTIRE way of life, but rather making adjustments to your lifestyle to better your personal health.Pros:+ Easy to understand advice.+ Book leaves clear goals and instructs you on how to reach them.+ Not ungodly long! Usually books of this variety are filled with lots of side nonsense, but this is as concise as it can get.+ You really won't find a better Cholesterol Lowering guide than this.Cons:- I have no complaints. As I said, you couldn't ask for more. Once you've read other books about the same stuff, you'll know why this is the best so far.Thank you Mr. McMillan, this book is definitely recommended to anyone who is thinking about it. :)

I've only started following it, but I definitely feel much better, so that's definitely something! I've only made minor adjustments so far, but starting next week I'll be stepping up my cholesterol game. Pretty excited!If you're looking for a book on cholesterol dieting, that's a little more comprehensive and straight to the point, this one is really worth picking up.

A medium enjoyable read By Valeska Let's get this out of the way: Duff McKagan is a true inspiration and I very much enjoyed his first book, "It's so easy (and other lies)"."How to be a man (and other illusions)", however, is a medium enjoyable read. Why is this?1) The book repeats a number of things that have been said before. If you have read the previous book, or even some of his columns in Seattle Weekly, you will tend to think, "Oh, that!" in a number of places. I suppose that this was to be expected - there's only so many things you can say about any one person's life. Putting out two books on yourself in a spell of a few years only is an ill-advised decision. If Duff had waited for another few years, it would have been more interesting to see how his perspective on certain things might have changed.2) There are a lot of "fillers". There is, for instance, an epic list of albums that every man should know. They're in alphabetical order, so if you enjoy reading dictionaries, you will love this chapter. The pages and pages of recommended books are equally frustrating. I understand that Duff would want to include these things. But a list of 20 would have been quite sufficient, and would have made the individual recommendations more significant.3) I am genuinely happy that Duff's life has turned out the way it has. Like I said, he is an inspiration in many ways. I am glad he loves his family. This is how it should be. Does this make for a good life? Yes. Does it make for an interesting read? I am not so sure.Still, I enjoyed Duff's style. He is funny with more than a hint of irony. I also appreciate him taking an open stand on a number of important topics. I do hope that this is not his last book.And after all - I'm a woman, so maybe I am just not the targeted reader! ;-)

This book was ok. Nothing special and certainly didn't teach me much about how to be a man. I guess I expected some more insight into His self help mindset. Oh and a little heavy on repeatedly mentioning how great his wife and kids are. I think we got it the first time....

About the Author

First-time author Abdul Lloyd-Bey is an African American attorney, an adjunct professor of paralegal studies and criminal justice lecturer at CUNY. His is the proud father of two wonderful children. Prior to attending law school, he worked with thousands of New York City public school students, serving as both a director of Medgar Evers College’s youth services program, which provides tutoring and college prep, and the director of the National Youth Sports Program.

But when Lloyd-Bey was seventeen, none of these achievements seemed remotely possible. Arrested for armed robbery, he would first have to endure nearly thirteen years in prison—surviving the discrimination of the criminal justice system and multiple near-fatal attacks from other convicts. Behind bars he read his first book and then went on to earn his GED and literacy coach certification in order to help his fellow prisoners.

The fact remains that there are millions of young Black 'throwaway' children here in America and throughout the world. This story not only needs to be read as it is told, but also studied for the purpose of making more progressive generations in the future.

As the story unfolded I was overcome with a range of emotions: anger, sadness, joy -- but above all, No Throwaway Boy was inspiring and it truly moved me. This book should be read by anyone who is concerned with the criminal justice system. It will change the way you view the criminal justice system. It puts a very personal face on the fact that our judicial system often fails and that the people who administer it are often not concerned. I was appalled to read about how the justice system failed a first time youthful offender and how it continues to fail so many people. I appreciate the authenticity of this book. I would rather the ugly truth any day, rather than a pretty lie. What sets this book apart from others is its unprecedented realism. This book is profound, extremely refreshing and heartfelt.

I'm into inspirational and uplifting books so I found this book VERY inspirational and it motivated me to stay focus and on top of things and I found a drive in me that I never knew existed. After reading this, I felt like I knew the author personally and wanted to give him a big hug. I wish I had people like him to look up to growing up. I'd recommend this to people of all age groups, especially to all the young brothers out there, to read and be inspired. This book could've been 1000 pages long and I'd complain it was to short but overall a great read!!!

By Michelle It gives a much wider picture of the whole case, giving us a very detailed background on Ariel Castro and the violence he committed before and during his most notorious crime. It gives the perspective of many people connected to the case, including Castro's family, his neighbors, the victim's families, the police, the prosecution, and the defense. While it does not have the in-depth first-person perspective provided by Michelle Knight, it does provide a better timeline concerning the case as a whole. I would recommend both this and Michelle Knight's book.

I have read Michelle Knight's book, but he had additional information and wrapped it up in a neat package. Congrats....keep up the good work...

By Kristy Van Lare I've read the two books by all three of the victims. The first book written by Michelle Knight and the second book written by Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. It goes without saying that they are three courageous heroes who are so brave for sharing their story with all of us. Their books were definitely worth reading.John Glatt's book has many contradictions in the details. I'm surprised none of the other reviews so far have mentioned all the discrepancies. The discrepancies are mainly in the details - who Michelle Knight reached to first upon her rescue, who helped save Amanda Berry on her escape, etc.They don't impact the bottom line of the story, but it's frustrating because it leaves you wondering what else he wasn't completely correct about.Also, some of the interviews are hard to follow what the person is referring to or what exactly they are trying to get across and the author doesn't assist.Lastly, the book needs a better editor. There were grammatical errors in the first few pages of the book. That's disappointing.

Muir wrote this book when he was 73 years old and recollects his experiences over may years in the valley. I found the most interesting sections to be descriptions of personal events - riding an avalanche, passing behind Yosemite Falls, the people he knew during those years. I simply wish more of the book had a similar content, I feel we have only been exposed to the tip of the iceberg, and there is so much more he could have offered. I have several of his other books, yet to read, so perhaps they will expand on his personal adventures.There are lengthy sections on the landscape, flowers, trees and other physical characteristics of the valley. It is these latter sections that drop me to a four star rating. I have a version without any pictures, and I believe that photographs would have done many sections of this book more justice than words. Some information on the trees may be unique and interesting, but I found myself skimming over several sections due to a lingering over latin names and taxonomy.This book should simply not be missed by those with a love for the outdoors, but keep in mind there may be some sections lacking the personal touch I was expecting for the whole book.

Bridled by God, Muir shows that his effort to discover was to be matched only by his drive to preserve Yosemite's existence forever. Muir's determination lead him on walks of over a thousand miles...... most of the time without uttering a word to anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. Truly a soul experienced only once in a millennium. Great read. Very inspiring!!

Grimes We all want to do something active to help any friend diagnosed with cancer, so along with that first meal that you bring the family, include this insightful and practical guide! Dr. Silver speaks from experience on both ends, because she is not only a cancer survivor, but a physician who specialized in rehab. Add into the mix that she is also a working mom, devoted to her kids, and understands the struggles inherent with balancing all of the above. Therefore, Dr. Silver's advice combines high end evidence-based medical recommendations with practical applications of that research, from sleep hygiene, complementary medicine and even prayer, to goal setting and guidance on such issues as appetite, "chemo brain", fatigue, setbacks and what to tell your children about cancer. Kudos to Dr. Silver for this invaluable resource!

He mulls through self improvement literature finds the choicest bits, puts them into a condensed format and shares them with the world. His books are concise, well written and most importantly actionable. In the short time I have been reading his work I've made more changes in my life than I have in years of trying to do this on my own. I've received something from each of his books I've read. I've taken the advice given on simplifying my life by reducing my number of choices specifically where my wardrobe is concerned. I save time getting ready for work, time doing laundry and energy costs for doing less laundry. May sound simple but the point is I actually took action and in many cases I'll read something and not act upon it. Simply due to information presented in this book. Unlike many ebooks everything is spelled correctly and grammatically correct. This is huge for me. I view that as the appropriate level of concern for his readers and pride in his work. If you're looking to simplify your life and only have a limited amount of time to devote to reading a book on the subject I honestly think you couldn't do much better than this.

When we have too many choices, it is hard to choose or make a decision. Fewer choices narrows the playing field an makes it easier to drill down and decide what we want. It is an important chapter because it focuses in on the essentials and forces you to function with "less is better"In chapter 2 "What really makes you happy" the topic is about getting rid of clutter and how to stop hoarding all your stuff. Getting rid of clutter induces that feeling of freedom.Chapter 3 "Simple Rules for Simplification" is about buying higher quality products to save money in the long run, creating your won list of simple rules, and focusing on the small chunks of BIG goals to make them easier to manage.Chapter 4 is a great piece of content that everyone should read. Wasting time is something that has become the norm these days, especially with social media tapped into our lives on our PCs and even in our pockets at just a reach away. watching TV and using social media kills hours of time a day and takes away from some of the joyful moments because we are all so obsessed with "sharing" and staying connected in every moment of our lives, that we are actually missing our life. My favourite chapter in the book is this one.Chapter 5 gives us a look at the importance of building a powerful positive mind-set and why we need it to get to that happy spot. This chapter gets into gratitude, resilience and how to worry less.Overall this is a nice book with some useful strategies and tips to live a simpler life, achieve more freedom, and get more done by doing less.

And yet the title brings up a question. Can you really have it all and simplify your life at the same time?The book begins by reminding me that too much randomness in my life produces confusion. If there are too many decisions to make, the result is often rushed decisions, poor decisions, or no decisions when it matters. Martin offers some quick examples of how to reduce my daily decision load; by choosing to make fewer choices. Martin makes it seem simple.Martin suggests that a focus on happiness makes choice easier, and the results of choice more rewarding. I’ve certainly experienced a feeling of freedom when decluttering. Martin gives some more ideas that will be worth trying.In Pure and Simple, I get three ‘rules’ for living more simply. They aren’t really ‘rules’; they are suggestions about choices. And they make a lot of sense! Then Martin give s three steps for developing a positive mindset, which makes the process (of staying positive) seem easy and worthwhile.Martin has done a lot of research fo this book, and offers alternative points of view, so I can weigh the evidence as he has. His process of reducing stress in life caused me to ask a lot of questions of myself. Maybe it will be the same for you too.
