This book tells the history of American corrections over the last 45 years as seen through the career of John D.Rees. Rees is a corrections professional who has worked in both the government and private sector, in six states, at various levels of executive and administrative positions. He tells his story of corrections through a variety of vignettes that he experienced over the past 45 years, starting from his early years at the University of Kentucky and Florida State University, to professional stints in Kentucky & Oklahoma in the 1970s. Then a return to state government in Kentucky and then on to the private company Corrections Corporation of America in the 1980s & '90s. In this new century, he returned to Kentucky as Commissioner of Corrections. Mr. Rees has followed a path through disturbances, escapes, court orders focusing on accreditation and professional management. He chronicles the tremendous changes that has taken place over the past four decades; corrections today is not perfect, far from it, but it is light-years from where it was when he began his career in 1967.

Since My Life is a collection of stories, you can pick and choose from topics at any point in the book. For example, one that popped out at me immediately was "My first ride in a private airplane." Since I hate to fly, I wanted to see what happened to Mr. Rees on this presumably eventful flight. I also wondered who "Ernesto Peter" was, so I opened My Life to page 12 and read another interesting and moving story about a lost-cause juvenile delinquent, that is, until John got hold of him. My Life is written in a conversational tone, with sometimes earthy language that you might expect to hear in the Corrections environment. No academic sanitizing of prison life here, just a realistic feel for what it is like to work in Corrections. The only thing I might have done differently is to entitle the book, "My Life in the Slammer."

I was expecting the book to speak to the wide swings over the decades in the criminal justice system. I was expecting the author to include words of wisdom that might help my son in making his career choice. I was also expecting a book that had been edited before printing. The typos, grammar errors and run on sentences were distracting. Needless to say, my expectations were not met. Instead, the book was more like a diary of someone who documented their career, their household moves, their travels, and their apparent belief that this would be of interest to the masses. The title of "My Life" is perfect for someone who wants to write about themselves.

What a Life By Marvin Klein It is rare to read a book that teaches us history about a current national problem, yet My Life does this in a straight forward, no holds barred manner. That is what John Rees has done by sharing his amazing 46-year career in the Corrections Industry. Through his eyes we see many important changes that impacted our nation plus an understanding of the current challenges and opportunities. My Life should be mandatory reading for Corrections professionals plus exciting reading for the rest of us. Our thanks to Commissioner Rees for sharing his “Life” with us.
