Lisa's life, from the time she was old enough to walk, could be chronicled in a series of bad hairstyles and even more dubious fashion choices! Growing up in a very small town that seemed, as a child, so large that you couldn't possibly know all of it, Temple's stories demonstrate the quality of memory and the essence of innocence. From Barrel Racing at the local Rodeo to driving to a nearby town to find a date to prom, Brunner creates loving and poignant snapshots of a Big Life in a town that has only a caution light on the highway that runs through it - a reminder that you don't always have to stop, but you do have to slow down.

By Pam Dennis “Caution Light on HWY 37” is a delightfully nostalgic romp through my childhood small town in the Midwest during the late 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. Lisa and Rich skillfully turn back the clock and delve into the collective consciousness of the citizens destined to live in the same community when time passed a little slower and lives were on display for all to see ……. and comment on either in public or behind doors that were never quite closed. While the names have been changed, the actual events are faithfully retold. The memories and feelings provoked are as vivid as ever to those of us who helped make up that limited population. In my mind’s eye, I can see them slowly unfolding once again. Knowing the outcome does not lessen the overwhelming joy or the gut wrenching angst that every kid has almost simultaneously endured throughout their up-bringing. Every one of us had those embarrassing moments that we thought we would never recover from and maybe we never did. If you weren’t mortified at least once, you weren’t trying hard enough to fit in. Under the dome of a small town, every event is magnified and pushed outwardly to its rural fringe. Our adulthood is so precariously shaped by random choices that most of us youngsters had no control over or were beyond the scope of our knowledge and abilities. Now 50 or so years later, most of us have left our old stomping grounds physically, but this book reminds us that we are still part of that fabric of time and it still weaves its way through our minds and hearts.

The writing is so vivid that I felt like I was reliving memories of my own personal history. And that's quite a testament because I grew up in a big city. But I have spent a lot of time in midwest towns and Rich Brunner does a wonderful job of laying out the foundation of Millmount, Kansas. I could literally see the town unfold before me as it was described block by block. Then, once the landscape of the town is created, the storytelling begins. The stories are first person accounts of weather mishaps, family frustrations and high school embarrassments seemingly told through the eyes of Lisa Temple. Each story is told in a way that evokes a commonality that the reader can relate to regardless of their background. Some of my favorite chapters included "Our House" detailing the continual additions (not necessarily up to code) to an ever expanding dwelling; and "My Clothes" where Lisa and her mom design unique and creative garments. A collection of photos are included which further support the action of the story - it's a lot like looking back at years of family photos and yearbooks. When the book began I was uncertain as to which midwestern state the story took place but as the action moved on it seemed to suggest Kickapoo County, Kansas: with perhaps the towns of Millwood and Fairmont combined to create "Millmount". The actual town (and the small state highway that passes through it) doesn't really matter because, as I stated previously, this story really does speak to us all no matter where we're from. Kudos!

Rich Brunner's superbly simple writing style and Lisa Temple's brave and candid memoir is a very powerful and satisfying read. It was hard to tear myself away from this book. I found it to be very inspiring on many levels and this quote expresses beautifully."And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others"Marianne WilliamsonI highly recommend this book!
