Unhappy with the dullness of small-town England in the 1960s, Rod escapes by going to sea. Aboard ship, he finds his place—at the bottom of the stratified navel hierarchy. At sea he experiences storms that toss large ships around like twigs. Venturing ashore in unfamiliar lands, he runs for his life through a Senegalese village, kisses a man in Australia, is mugged in Tahiti, almost kills the third mate in Sweden and is captured by a woman in Vancouver.

A damn good read By The Loftsman Found this a great read and will interest anyone who has an interest in the sea or ships, some very good descriptions of living in a small town in the U.K. during an ever changing time, one of the main outs for kids then was a life at sea and this is the route that Rod Baker the author took, which of course led to many adventures well covered in his new book.We have been so impressed by this, his first book that we are happy to also advertise it on our website at www.leithshipyards.com and on the associated Blog.

An excellent debut book By Jessie Gussman An excellent debut book!Baker begins his tale with a short picture of his childhood in working-class, post WWII England. On page 9, on his way home from his last day of school--glad to be done with school, sick of education, but unsure what to do with his life--he 'drowns' his math folder. I could totally relate and he had me from that point on.This book was an interesting look at the life of a Merchant Marine in the 1960s. Baker has a comfortable way of writing that makes you feel like you're right there with him. He nails the awkwardness of becoming a man--those intense feelings and confusing emotions--against the backdrop of ship life and frequent stops in foreign and exotic ports. Told very much 'in the moment,' the prose is engaging and real. You experience his adventures--some humorous, some sad, some poignant, some outright crazy, through his eyes. His descriptions brought the book to life--the Suez Canal with its desert on both sides of the water was particularly well-done.Constant Traveller R801168 is an adventure story and a coming of age tale told with skill and honesty. If you enjoy memoirs, I don't think you'll be disappointed in this book!

The First Part of a Remarkable Life By Scott Skipper Baling rags at the recycle center did not suit Rod Baker when he finished school but a hitch in the Merchant Marine did. Thus began several years of adventure for the seventeen-year-old as he sailed around the world calling on exotic ports filled with exotic women. Rod went on several nautical odysseys losing his virginity and innocence—not that he had a lot—in the process. This is the story of the coming of age of an English youth in that pivotal time that was the sixties. Going to sea was the rite of passage that wrenched a callow boy into manhood, eventually responsibility, and not often gently. After many episodes of hard drinking, dope smoking, thieving and whoring, Rod is catapulted into respectability by that most powerful force of domestication, love.Rod Baker tells his story with such candor and simplicity that the reader cannot help but love, admire and envy the man. His matter-of-fact confessions of bad behavior and his open expression of emotion grabs the reader viscerally. A memoir is not worth reading if the author is not extraordinary. Rod Baker is clearly extraordinary.
