About the Author Richie Gerber is a musician, performer, comedian, and impresario. Over the years, he produced hundreds of jazz concerts that featured his band The Free Radicals, playing straight-ahead jazz, bebop, and swing with jazz greats like Eddie Higgins, former Count Basie alumnus Pete Minger, five-time Grammy nominee Ira Sullivan, and Buddy DeFranco. Gerber is the former owner of the Bread of Life Natural Foods Market, which merged with Whole Foods Markets in 1997 to form the Whole Foods Florida Region. Leveraging his knowledge as an organic farmer and natural foods store owner/operator, Gerber became a licensed nutrition counselor and went on to produce and host The Natural Grocer Radio Show for ten years, the longest-running health talk radio show in South Florida at the time. Illustrator Miguel Covarrubias (November 22, 1904–February 4, 1957) can arguably be called the chronicler of “The Jazz Age.” Moving from his birthplace of Mexico to New York City as a nineteen-year-old in 1923, carrying his pen and sketchpad, he instantaneously took the Big Apple by storm. He shared a studio on 42nd Street with Al Hirschfeld, a caricaturist greatly influenced by “El Chamaco” (“The Kid”—Covarrubias’s nickname). Covarrubias’s original, unique, and innovative style of drawing celebrity caricatures catapulted him into a teenage/twenty-something storied celebrity artist, landing him gigs at top-tier magazines such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. In 1933, Covarrubias was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, which he used to study the Island of Bali and write and illustrate a highly celebrated book by the same name. In 1940, he was awarded a second Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as numerous other awards.

Pomes Richie Gerber, a gifted saxophonist and aficionado of all things jazz for more than 40 years, has come forth here with a wonderfully informed and affectionate and (yes, sometimes) funny valentine to this most unique of American musical idioms.This is as much a primer on the treasures and pleasures of jazz music as it is a pleasant reminder of where much of the greatest jazz music came from in the start of the 20th century. Readers should be aware that this book’s approach to jazz is crystallized through the life history and prodigious musical compositions of George Gershwin (there’s also mention of his equally influential brother, Ira). One of my favorite things about the book is how every chapter is given the title of a jazz piece (some of which were written but never released commercially). While I read the book, I had the fun of playing the song in question (either from my own collection or, in a pinch, by going to YouTube) while I read each successive chapter. That lively bond between written word and recorded music, paired with the stylized sketches of two-time Guggenheim Fellowship-winning artist/illustrator Miguel Covarrubias, does much to turn Gerber’s book into a kind of multi-sensory experience.For those who seek a more comprehensive overview of jazz history along the lines of Ted Gioia, Garry Giddins, and (more recently) John Gennari . . . well, you have those other writers and their books. What is so special about Gerber’s book on the music that he so dearly loves is that he invites his readers to ride alongside him as he takes you on the sweetest and most sentimental of journeys – he brings you into a view of jazz that was often defined and given strong foundation through the gift of Gershwin’s chosen art – that of music.Either as the one book you have on jazz, the first book you have on jazz that leads to further immersion, or as a sweet and pleasantly lowdown meditation on jazz from one of its more jubilant practitioners . . . a book to savor and adore, and that leaves you wanting more more more!

Clever and humorous book on the history of jazz By neat freak Being a casual jazz fan, I found the book both entertaining and enlightening.Richie Gerber has really written a clever and humorous book on the history of jazz. The illustrations are special, reflecting the mood of the period in an artistic form that melds well with his humor. It looks good on my coffee table in the living room where I have jazz art displayed on the wall. It also would make an excellent choice for schools and students looking for a very readable overview of this genre.
