As a parent, teacher, and someone who is or have been a teenager - this is a must read By Becky This is the new "Prozac Nation" -- an incredibly well written, personal story of facing one's inner monster, determination to be well and the struggle of recovery and after. The eating disorder becomes the main character somewhere around page 75 of this 300-something page book. The first quarter of the book builds the crescendo making it clear how come being privileged, intelligent and attractive woman who, on the outside seems to have everything one needs to be happy (loving parents, fairy-tail romance, etc.) cannot protect one from the deeper insecurities, anxieties, need to please and desire to be perfect and loved. A pain that almost anyone who was a teenage can relate to, but copes with differently.I finished the book in one day because I could not put it down. As a parent, I could not stop asking myself while reading -- what could have her parents do differently to change the course of their daughter's fate? Would giving her a choice to stay with her ill mother in the US vs. staying with her father in Singapore prevent the situation? Would being more attentive to her and not focused on the mental condition of her sibling make the difference? Was it even an option? As a college instructor, I was concerned about some aspects of the culture she was exposed to that had the potential to be even more destructive, but I was relieved and appreciative in new ways of the way Greek life can provide an effective support network and create relationships that foster recovery. I was sad that the book did not mention any of her college instructors, suggesting nobody on that level has reached out to her or motivated her, except the inspirational extra-credit guest lecture. To summarize, this is a powerful, gripping book. It is very well written (although a little more thorough editing job would be needed at times -- small things, like "communication" not "communications" major). I enjoyed it immensely and keep it on the shelf for my daughter to read when she is hits adolescence.it was wonderful to see the power of her

Written in an honest way, Corinne goes back through the details of her struggle with anorexia - the choices leading up to it, the emotional trauma caused by it, how it was fueled, the gradual steps that helped her decide to give it up. Reading this book helped me to see an eating disorder from an insider's perspective and therefore understand the disease better. I was also struck by the wisdom of Corinne's hindsight as she went back through the circumstances and choices that lead to her struggle with an eating disorder. The wisdom with which she approaches the past gives the reader hope for recovery on the other side. I really appreciated her honest perspective. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with anorexia (whether they realize it or not!), anyone who has a friend struggling, anyone who works with youth, and parents.

It is a look deep inside the mind of someone you love-someone in your life has a secret struggle. Someone in your life who under eats, over eats, battles within their own mind. Corrine clearly lays out how she fought the demons of adolescence and grew into an accomplished young woman. She does this while burrowing deeply inside your own heart, your own family. It is a book of hope for parents, young people, and human beings. Corrine tells us we have the power to overcome. I am grateful to believe her and see the proof.
