Mercedez always wanted to become a writer. She wrote her first book, "This is a Confusing Life" in the sixth grade. It now represents a glimpse of her dilemma in trying to understand who and why she was and is included in its entirety. As she became older, she wanted to write her story. She expressed this time and time again. I made a promise to her through the heavens above that I would write her story one day, but could not when I was so broken hearted. There have been many days I have just wanted to throw all of her writings back into the crates I found them in, because it has been so very painful. I cannot bring her back, which is the only thing that would heal my pain. But, I can try to do this last thing for her. She was Rog, Spencer and Mercedez but she was always a SHE. She had been on a continuous quest her entire life, searching for who and why she was. No one wakes up to say, I want to be "Trans". Mercedez thought her story would help others that were struggling with the same problems, and help their families and the world to understand their plight. She was an innovative child; a light, a precious, inquisitive, beautiful child misunderstood by so many including her family. Mercedez was a TRILOGY. Many thought of her as distorted and complicated. Time after time she was tortured by "Life" itself.

Reed This story is told from the heart of a young boy as he grew into a more confusing life. His words are tender, authentic, and drew me into the reality he felt when he was even in grade school. This "this is my story" began even years before he faced the bullying, misunderstanding, and, ultimately, discrimination. These weren't words made up years later as a way to "get attention" or to "drive an agenda."These words were painful to read as I knew this child. I could have never known the internal confusion he was experiencing. I knew him as a very loving, joyful, bright child. He made me smile and delight in his innocence. I loved the little guy. He was a noble, gifted child with playful, loving ways. Now, 25 years plus later, I, as a licensed mental health counselor and an ordained minister in the Christian faith, try to be especially sensitive to discrimination. I have received discrimination as a female minister. My clients and parishioners have often confided in me regarding their received or perceived discrimination in many arenas of their lives. This book takes me deeper into experiencing the confusion that others have shared concerning their gender identity struggles.I am still delving into the "message of the heart" expressed here so genuinely. Recent scientific evidence is revealing so much, so rapidly now regarding the organ--the brain--and how it is "the one" probably directing our gender identity process through hormones and quantities of such being/not being released there in the brain. Now, I am trying to interface the science with the heart and message of this child. The fact that I knew this child, I knew the woman he became, and I attended and treasured the gospel truth she conveyed as she spoke the eulogy at her grandmother's funeral...All of this calls me to respond to the challenge to go deeper and learn more in this area.Mercedez's grandmother and her grandmother's sister were women of deep, deep faith who were active in a traditional religious tradition. They, too, along with many of us had to face the fact that she loved the same God we did. She wanted the same things in life we did. She brought no harm or hurt to others as she respected others. She respected the struggles/journeys of others to learn and understand her truth. Her kindness in not asking or pushing anyone to accept her made her even more precious. As an adult, as when she was a child, she didn't want to hurt another in any way.The loss of jobs because of "discovery/being clocked" or because she told the truth up front resulted in horrible choices and situations. My culture/our culture must take heed and accept some responsibility in that. How different life could have been if regular jobs were available? This book conveys a wonderful, loving child trying to grow to become the best he/she could be and who loved and worshiped God. What more can we ask of a child? Maybe IT IS TIME we "grownups" study, examine science and the new documentation about the brain, and listen for God's heart in this. Maybe this story will challenge more than just me to respect, to listen, to pray, and to receive God's message in and through Mercedez's life. I hope so. I will/do recommend it. I would like for it to be made into a movie so that others can hear, feel, touch the joy and confusion she experienced. Maybe I/others need to be willing to experience some confusion and stretching to clarify our views just as she, her family, and many others have, are doing, or will be doing as others come forth sharing their inner path of confusion and feeling "different" somehow?

Mercedez Love was a remarkable, beautiful & amazing woman. The world was better with her in it and is poorer without her. But herstory, tragic though it may be, is absolutely inspiring with intrinsic value for all. I implore one and all to read this book and learn of her courage, her intelligence, her insights, her decency and goodness, indeed her deep and all encompassing humanity. She so wanted to make a positive difference in this troubled world and I believe in my heart that with this amazing biography she will accomplish just that even from beyond the grave. Bless you Mercedez Love, bless you.
