About the Author

Mercedez always wanted to become a writer. She wrote her first book, "This is a Confusing Life" in the sixth grade. It now represents a glimpse of her dilemma in trying to understand who and why she was and is included in its entirety. As she became older, she wanted to write her story. She expressed this time and time again. I made a promise to her through the heavens above that I would write her story one day, but could not when I was so broken hearted. There have been many days I have just wanted to throw all of her writings back into the crates I found them in, because it has been so very painful. I cannot bring her back, which is the only thing that would heal my pain. But, I can try to do this last thing for her. She was Rog, Spencer and Mercedez but she was always a SHE. She had been on a continuous quest her entire life, searching for who and why she was. No one wakes up to say, I want to be "Trans". Mercedez thought her story would help others that were struggling with the same problems, and help their families and the world to understand their plight. She was an innovative child; a light, a precious, inquisitive, beautiful child misunderstood by so many including her family. Mercedez was a TRILOGY. Many thought of her as distorted and complicated. Time after time she was tortured by "Life" itself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Soul searching simply to give and receive love. By Kathryn M. Reed This story is told from the heart of a young boy as he grew into a more confusing life. His words are tender, authentic, and drew me into the reality he felt when he was even in grade school. This "this is my story" began even years before he faced the bullying, misunderstanding, and, ultimately, discrimination. These weren't words made up years later as a way to "get attention" or to "drive an agenda."These words were painful to read as I knew this child. I could have never known the internal confusion he was experiencing. I knew him as a very loving, joyful, bright child. He made me smile and delight in his innocence. I loved the little guy. He was a noble, gifted child with playful, loving ways. Now, 25 years plus later, I, as a licensed mental health counselor and an ordained minister in the Christian faith, try to be especially sensitive to discrimination. I have received discrimination as a female minister. My clients and parishioners have often confided in me regarding their received or perceived discrimination in many arenas of their lives. This book takes me deeper into experiencing the confusion that others have shared concerning their gender identity struggles.I am still delving into the "message of the heart" expressed here so genuinely. Recent scientific evidence is revealing so much, so rapidly now regarding the organ--the brain--and how it is "the one" probably directing our gender identity process through hormones and quantities of such being/not being released there in the brain. Now, I am trying to interface the science with the heart and message of this child. The fact that I knew this child, I knew the woman he became, and I attended and treasured the gospel truth she conveyed as she spoke the eulogy at her grandmother's funeral...All of this calls me to respond to the challenge to go deeper and learn more in this area.Mercedez's grandmother and her grandmother's sister were women of deep, deep faith who were active in a traditional religious tradition. They, too, along with many of us had to face the fact that she loved the same God we did. She wanted the same things in life we did. She brought no harm or hurt to others as she respected others. She respected the struggles/journeys of others to learn and understand her truth. Her kindness in not asking or pushing anyone to accept her made her even more precious. As an adult, as when she was a child, she didn't want to hurt another in any way.The loss of jobs because of "discovery/being clocked" or because she told the truth up front resulted in horrible choices and situations. My culture/our culture must take heed and accept some responsibility in that. How different life could have been if regular jobs were available? This book conveys a wonderful, loving child trying to grow to become the best he/she could be and who loved and worshiped God. What more can we ask of a child? Maybe IT IS TIME we "grownups" study, examine science and the new documentation about the brain, and listen for God's heart in this. Maybe this story will challenge more than just me to respect, to listen, to pray, and to receive God's message in and through Mercedez's life. I hope so. I will/do recommend it. I would like for it to be made into a movie so that others can hear, feel, touch the joy and confusion she experienced. Maybe I/others need to be willing to experience some confusion and stretching to clarify our views just as she, her family, and many others have, are doing, or will be doing as others come forth sharing their inner path of confusion and feeling "different" somehow?

Mercedez Love was a remarkable, beautiful & amazing woman. The world was better with her in it and is poorer without her. But herstory, tragic though it may be, is absolutely inspiring with intrinsic value for all. I implore one and all to read this book and learn of her courage, her intelligence, her insights, her decency and goodness, indeed her deep and all encompassing humanity. She so wanted to make a positive difference in this troubled world and I believe in my heart that with this amazing biography she will accomplish just that even from beyond the grave. Bless you Mercedez Love, bless you.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The floodways are as much of a character in this mystery as the moors are in Arthur Conan Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles". By Thomas R. Weber This book is rich in atmosphere, culture and suspense. I learned a lot about and gained respect and appreciation for the people of the "Bootheel" of southeast Missouri. This is a first rate mystery set in the mysterious and foreboding "Floodways". The floodways are as much of a character as the moors were in arthur Conan Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles". This is a first rate mystery by a man who has lived life to the fullest. His life experiences and tenacity come through on every page. A well written mystery with vivid characters and atmosphere. Makes me want to visit that part of the country. I love the title.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Innocence can be lost in many ways; one of them is murder. By Donald J. Bingle Hal Walker has a deep, abiding understanding of the cadence, culture, dialect, geography, history, flora, fauna, climate, and religion of the Missouri Bootheel and the floodways, ditches, rail lines, highways, and dirt roads that comprise it, because he lived it as a child and then, as an adult, went back and investigated and researched it. This strikingly moving tale conveys all of that to the reader, while still maintaining the point-of-view of the author as a young boy confused and moved by a murder that he has never been able to forget. While the historical incidents recited are tragic, this book also conveys the regional atmosphere and culture of life and work among the floodways, as well as the courage and hope of the people who lived there. Intriguing details and a moving finish combine to make this a strong piece of narrative non-fiction. I found all of it interesting, but if you already know a lot about the area's geography and history or want to hurry up to get to the murder, you can skim through chapters 2-7 for a tighter, more compelling pacing. Recommended for history buffs, those interested in regional stories of Americana, true crime aficionados, and those who like their literary coming-of-age tales with a bit more grit about the true loss of innocence. I received a review copy of this title.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. At once a murder mystery but also an elegiac paean to a lost way of Life on the Bootheel of Southern Missouri By Edward F. Mowry Hal Walker’s just published novel, “Murder on the floodways” unfolds the story of a murder of two young men Hal and all the denizens of that unique place called the Bootheel, knew intimately. The murder was shocking, but anyone who knew Hokey Busby was not fully surprised.Hal’s novel begins with a historical painting of life in the Deep South in the late 1940’s and 50’s in an area of southeast Missouri, where families eked out their existence in the cotton fields of transformed swampland, their success or failure often determined by the vagaries of weather regardless of their grit, intelligence, and grueling hard work.Life in the Bootheel, just subsequent to World War II was one of constant struggle against the elements, but this struggle in many ways defined this southern existence where families were tight knit, and Baptist faith was the glue. As Hal describes so eloquently, “Farming, simply put, was optimism turned to pessimism turned to despair turned to prayer.” But within this harsh environment of enervating heat, humidity, with the omnipresent mosquitoes and work “sunup to sundown,” strength of character evolves and Sunday is truly special, as work stops on the Sabbath. What was it like for a boy growing up in Pemiscot County among the floodways in the cotton belt of the rural south? Start with no electricity, phones or indoor plumbing. Dig deeper, and some men would die for a boyhood in the Bootheel, the mystery of the floodways, overnight fishing on the canals, your own private fishing hole, testing the unexpected with your .22 rifle handy just in case, riding your own horse, exploring the Bootheel with Buddy, your constant canine friend.A second theme plays out in Hal’s story, what some might call bad seed, something just not right, not rational, not controllable and thus striking fear in those close at hand. Hokey Busby was charismatic, wild, unpredictable. He and “Fasts” Harry Shell were best friends, but potential violence was always smoldering below Hokey’s surface. In all honesty, don’t many of us harbor thoughts and actions we suppress because we are guided by a moral code which overrides impulse. Maybe Hokey lacked that moral code. Hal carries this story of murder as inevitable and sad, haunting his memories even now in 2015.“Murder on the Floodways” is a true story, a labor of love imbued in Hal Walker’s DNA, an elegiac paean to a lost way of life with its mixed blessing of constant struggle yet passionate love of the land and the people of Peniscot County, Hal’s people, Hal’s history. Savor his story, a beautifully depicted journey of life on the Bootheel and the mystery of human behavior we can never fully fathom.Ed Mowry, Author of "So Close to Dying"

The definitive autobiography of Willie Nelson "Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned." . . . So say the publishers about this book I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold. It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it. My life gets lived on the road, at home, and on the road again, tried and true, and I've written it all down from my heart to yours. Signed,Willie Nelson

It's a Long Story: My Life, by Willie Nelson

Review "A smooth-spoken recollection of the country legend's childhood and his eight-decade-long musical career.... Just like this book -- and its subject -- direct and genuine."―Mike Snider, USA Today"Invaluable... Nelson writes the way he sings and plays guitar--with conversational ease and grace."―James Reed, The Boston Globe"Every page radiates authenticity.... Heartfelt...."―Douglas Brinkley, The Washington Post"Endlessly entertaining.... Readers of It's a Long Story will finally get the sense that Nelson is sitting before them spilling everything he can remember.... It's a wonderful thing if you love ol' Willie -- and who doesn't? ... Nelson has spent decades on the road building this story -- do yourself a favor and take a day or two to read it."―Hunter Hauk, Dallas Morning News"Brims with affectionate reminiscences of Nelson's childhood and semi-wayward youth, his turbulent marriages and career zigzags. And of course his raison d'être, music."―Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyA "breezy new autobiography... His voice as a writer, as in song, is warm, generous and good-timey."―James Sullivan, San Francisco Chronicle"Nelson offers a warm, friendly, and a deeply reflective glimpse behind the making of most of his albums as well as behind-the-scenes looks at some of his best-known hits.... Reading Nelson's narrative is like sitting on the front porch chatting with an old friend."―Publishers WeeklyA "candid, heartfelt memoir.... In a plainspoken, conversational tone reminiscent of his singing voice."―Dave Shiflett, Wall Street Journal"The closing chapters are reflective and heartfelt--part musical and part personal--and they nicely bookend Nelson's admirable attempt to recount his 'long story.'"―Andrew Dansby, The Houston Chronicle"One of the original 'outlaw' country singers puts it all on the line with this bawdy and moving tale of his extraordinary life."―Allen Pierleoni, The Sacramento Bee"As breezy, entertaining and occasionally bizarre as the man himself."―Larry Getlen, New York Post"An autobiography that ought to be on any Southern music lover's shelf--this is Willie in his own authentic voice, sharing memories of his Texas upbringing."―CJ Lotz, Garden & GunIt's a Long Story "is closer to a series of Raymond Carver stories: terse, conversational and peppered with profanity, jokes and life lessons.... One of the great stories in American music."―Jim Kiest, San Antonio Express-News"This is the definitive Willie Nelson story. It's a rare insight into an American folk hero, one told in a voice as powerful and genuine as the red-headed stranger himself."―Mark Flanagan, Run Spot Run"The often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking story of a life on the run."―Woody Harrelson, Interview"This rollicking bio perfectly captures the inimitable voice of his plain-speaking subject."―Sarah Murdoch, Toronto Star"Who doesn't love Trigger-wielding Willie Nelson? ... Pour a drink, take a seat and dig into the life story of one of America's true living legends."―Parade"One of America's most gifted songwriters and storytellers, Nelson mesmerizes us with his gift of gab in this autobiography, regaling us with stories of his life -- from his childhood and youth in Abbott, TX, to the ups and downs of his marriages, and his deep love for his family, friends, fans, and songwriting."―Henry Carrigan, No Depression"Country music legend Willie Nelson tells his life story his way, with humor and outright honesty. Most of the time, it feels as if he is sitting right across the table talking directly to us, pouring out his heart and soul."―Christine M. Irvin, BookReporter"Nelson recounts a colorful life story in and out of music. And what a life it has been."―Bob Ruggiero, Houston Press"Warm, witty, and burnished with cowboy mystic wisdom."―Tim Stegall, The Austin Chronicle"Long Story thrives on the basis of two factors: Nelson's short sentences, chalk-full of his deadpan wit and the larger-than-life tales he shares.... Nelson's sage and easy-going spin on these various yarns, and the morals he offers up in his summations, are endearing and entertaining.... Essential reading."―James Courtney, San Antonio Current"A fascinating memoir of a living American icon. It is as colorful as Willie's life has been. Written in a very beautiful and gripping style, Nelson's book reads like a novel."―The Washington BookReview"It's a Long Story proves to capture the Red Headed Stranger in a direct light, and fans have plenty to gain within its pages."―Tyler R. Kane, Paste Magazine's "The 15 Best Nonfiction Books of 2015 (So Far)""As a kid, Willie Nelson wrote poetry. From an early age, he understood the power of a simple, direct voice and it's this voice that makes My Life more than just another run-of-the-mill, music industry memoir.... You don't need to be a fan to be beguiled by his gift for spinning a yarn."―Fiona Capp, The Sydney Morning Herald"Behind Willie's remarkable music is a remarkable life, well rendered in It's a Long Story... It reads like what you might hear if you were sitting on the front porch talking with Willie about his life and about music. And who wouldn't want to do that?"―Larry Thornberry, The American Spectator"A roadmap for the richest kind of life.... Willie is a loquacious storyteller with a disarming knack for self-effacement."―Malcolm Jones, The Daily Beast

He covers a lot of his experiences, feelings and thoughts; but what might be of most interest to his many fans are his descriptions of how he wrote many of his songs. He wants to tell his story and he most certainly does. A song is a short story and he has used them to tell much of his life but here are the fine points.I like his music, but have never seen him perform (but now I have tickets for this summer) and didn't know much about him, other than some things I have read in newspapers and his legal troubles. Those are covered in here and how he keeps on going. He relates much of his life to his music and he covers his childhood to the present in these pages. He does begin with his IRS troubles. He is blunt in his language and his attitude. He writes as he speaks and yes there is profanity in here. That is just how some talk and his writing is seemingly as honest as his manner. He does tell about downing huge quantities of whiskey and wine, experimenting with LSD and of course his ongoing love affair with pot.If anything else his song writing is amazing. He has written some of country music's greatest classics: Crazy, Pretty Paper, Funny How time Slips Away among others. He tells how they came into being and how they and others were recorded.Despite all this, what is overriding is his love for family, friends, even his different wives, women, and his faith. This might be old hat for his tried and true fans, but these are his personal stories and his look on life and the background of his music, his songs and how his recordings came to be.This is a book for Willie Nelson fans and when you read it you will have more of an appreciation for this man and his music. It might even make new fans for the man and his songs.

By Mark Flanagan What I love most about Willie's autobiography is the attention he paid to telling the story of his younger years. Long before Honeysuckle Rose and Farm Aid, long before he became a target of the IRS and a spokesman for marijuana, before Austin and before Nashville even. Willie Nelson's is truly a long story, and it's a pleasure to hear it told from the beginning, in Willie's voice. It's a Long Story begins at the beginning - in Abbott, Texas - where Willie and his sister, Bobby, were raised by their grandparents, and takes the reader through Willie's start as a disc jockey and a musician, his ups and downs (mostly downs) in the Texas clubs, and his attempts to make it in California and Oregon, where he met Mae Axton, who worked for Elvis's manager at the time and advised Willie to go to Nashville, or at least back to Texas. Some of the best parts are the insights Willie provides into the origins of his early songs, written at some of his lowest points - numbers like "Night Life", "Crazy", and "Hello Walls", which he wrote at a $50/week songwriting job he took at Pamper Music in Goodlettesville, TN.We all know Shotgun Willie, the high-flying outlaw country star who has played music with everyone from Ray Charles to Kid Rock. It's a Long Story reveals the man prior to the legend, the clean-shaven Texas picker who pounded the pavement, sold vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias on the side, and busted his ass for three decades before his star began to shine.

The Journey Never Ends By prisrob 'Night Life, 'Crazy' and 'Hello Walls, three of Willie Nelson's most wonderful and long lasting songs were almost sold for five dollars a piece. Willie was down on his luck, looking for work, and needed money. Thankfully, the man he wanted to sell them to, would not buy them, but offered him an opportunity to move on. This is but one little bit of info we learn about this wonderful, musical man. From a young age Willie had the music in him. Brought up by his grandparents in the little Texas town they lived in, he and his sister had a wonderful childhood. Not much money but love, hard work, and perseverance. Willie was always active, an athlete, loved the music he learned from Church, but when he was offered money to play honky tonk in a bar, he took it. Eight dollars a night, more than he made in a week picking cotton. He moved around a lot, every small and large town in Texas, Oregon, California, and then he traveled to Nashville where his life turned around.Willie makes it clear that family and friends come first. However, Willie was a ladie's man, and was out every evening playing his music. With three marriages behind him and several children, Willie admits he cheated, many times. He liked to drink, smoke pot, and play his music, but he loves his family, dearly. We hear all the stories, the people he met who helped him on his way from birth to this present day. He is now 82, still going strong, loves his ranch in Abbott, Texas, and that is where his journey begins and ends.He talks about his problems with the IRS and the multi millions he ended up owing. He glosses over his financial manager who he said extended the IRS claims. Willie refused to declare bankruptcy, and worked for years to pay off his debt. Willie is good to everyone, and it seems whatever came in went to those he knew. Lessons learned, however, and his money is now looked after very carefully.Willie gives his love of pot several chapters. He no longer smokes it, but he does inhale it. We hear of the times he has been picked up in his traveling bus. One thing Willie was adamant about, no hard drugs in his brand, none. He had a friend who liked cocaine, but that was his business. We hear about and meet all the musicians he played with, famous and not so. He has known them all, played with most of them, gone to the White House several times, and met the famous and infamous. One interesting point is that Willie does not remember several stories in the book. David Ritz, his co writer may have put the book together after hearing Willie talk about his life, and Willie may not have read the book of his life. No matter this is a rollicking, good read by a musician and song writer extraordinaire. To hear his music is to love him.Recommended. 05-05-15

A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam: True Tales and Otherwise is a collection of narrative episodes from Ira McComic, an Army AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship pilot and fire team leader who served with the 235th Aerial Weapons Company (the Delta Devils) in Vietnam. These firsthand accounts range from the tragically true to ones that reflect a tradition among those aviators whose philosophy is expressed as "Why bother to tell a story unless you can improve it?"  A person who was curious once asked a Cobra pilot what it was like to fly these gunships in Vietnam, and he replied, "I got to fly around, shoot up things, and camp out a lot. What was there not to like?" It was another Cobra pilot who supplied the answer to that question: "All the other stuff."The reality of being a gunship pilot in Vietnam was contrary to a dime-novel notion of a shoot-em-up aerial gunslinger, and if you're curious about what it was like to fly Cobra helicopter gunships in Vietnam, ride along with A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam: True Tales and Otherwise.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. understandable and funny in places By Higheralt Since one of the popular magazines ran a cover story on the US Army's new helicopter, circa 1967, this reader has been curious about the AH-1 Cobra.Ira McComic relates everything any curious person would want to know about the Army's attack helo, training, the front seater, the rear seater, the ground crews, weapons load out, pre-flight, flight, limitations, and just about everything else. The author relates that he did not select to become an Army attack helo pilot, but the Army decided that for him.The book is very readable, understandable and funny in places. The short chapter about the banana tree, which has nothing to do with helos, is worth reading the book just to have a side splitting laugh. The author does everything but put the reader into the helo for mission ops. A well written book for any historian or person interested to know more about the Army's front line attack helo 1967-1999. The glossary at the end of the book is an excellent and a much needed reference to understand the acronyms used liberally throughout the text.Highly recommended.

On paper Steve Katz’s career rivals anyone’s except the 1960s’ and ’70’s biggest stars: the Monterey Pop Festival with the legendary Blues Project, Woodstock with Blood, Sweat & Tears, and even producing rock’s most celebrated speed addict, Lou Reed. There were world tours, and his résumé screams “Hall of Fame” — it won’t be long before BS&T are on that ballot. He has three Grammies (ten nominations), three Downbeat Reader’s Poll Awards, three gold records, one platinum record, and one quadruple platinum platter (the second Blood, Sweat & Tears album), not to mention three gold singles with BS&T. All together, he’s sold close to 29 million records. He had affairs with famous female folk singers, made love to Jim Morrison’s girlfriend Pam when Jim was drunk and abusive, partied with Elizabeth Taylor and Groucho Marx, dined with Rudolf Nureyev, conversed with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Tennessee Williams, hung out with Andy Warhol, jammed with everyone from Mose Allison to Jimi Hendrix, and was told to get a haircut by both Mickey Spillane and Danny Thomas. But his memoir is more Portnoy’s Complaint than the lurid party-with-your-pants-down memoir that has become the norm for rock ’n’ roll books. It’s an honest and personal account of a life at the edge of the spotlight—a privileged vantage point that earned him a bit more objectivity and earnest outrage than a lot of his colleagues, who were too far into the scene to lay any honest witness to it. Set during the Greenwich Village folk/rock scene, the Sixties’ most celebrated venues and concerts, and behind closed doors on international tours and grueling studio sessions, this is the unlikely story of a rock star as nerd, nerd as rock star, a nice Jewish boy who got to sit at the cool kid’s table and score the hot chicks.

Blood, Sweat, and My Rock 'n' Roll Years: Is Steve Katz a Rock Star?, by Steve Katz

Review “My friend Steve Katz was a nice Jewish boy who became a big star. Happily he is now a nice Jewish gentleman who lived the rock’n’roll lifestyle and lived to tell the tale in this wickedly funny insight into the decadent days of the music world of the 60s and 70s. I was there – it’s all true!” —Terry Ellis Co-founder of Chrysalis Records"Steve Katz's book opens the door on a magical time when the counterculture -- and the transformations of youth in New York, and California, and all of America -- were flowering. With a light touch and a wry intimacy, he adds to an important history: our own."-- Sheila Weller, author of the bestsellingGirls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon -- and the Journey of a Generation"I love love love Steve Katz's new book about Blood Sweat and Rock and Roll - a dizzying, delicious, head spinning heart-wrenching tale of the Sixties and what even those of us who were there might have missed--stories of the great band he was part of, that tore up the charts while the music rolled up the avenues of the world. Touring, the treasures and torments, faces and voices- Joni in the dark and light, Al Kooper in the day and night, Mimi in the morning at Judy's house, Danny Kalb in the aftermath of Monterey, Janis Joplin in profile. It is a great ride, both for those who were there and never saw the other side of the story, and those who weren't, and want to know what really happened in the Cafe Wha, the Gaslight, Bitter End in New York, Monterey Pop and the Woodstock that happened off-stage. Great book, great read, great life." - Judy Collins, singer, writer and survivor of the Sixties“Katz engagingly recounts fascinating stories in an insightful, intelligent, sometimes wistful and sometimes funny style that makes this one of the few rock memoirs worth reading from beginning to end.”-Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

About the Author Steve Katz was a founding member of The Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He became a record producer, working with rock renegade Lou Reed, among others. Now, Katz and his wife, Alison Palmer have a ceramics shop, Alison Palmer Studio, in South Kent, Connecticut.

The book rocks and Steve is a star, so I can start by answering a question from the jacket cover of the book, Is Steve Katz a Rock Star?, YES he is. This memoir takes you through the many year's Steve has been involved with music. You get to meet many of the musical greats he met and played with, up close and personal. You feel like you are there with Steve as he hangs around with Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Al Kooper, Dave Van Ronk, and Steve's two famous bands, the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Going back to the 60's and 70's, with Steve, will bring smiles to your faces, if you can remember those days, but if you are a young reader you will get a sense of what music and the "scene" were all about. I enjoyed reading the book with my tablet by my side, so I could pull up the musical references made in this fun, easy to read book, and listen to the music that made Steve a rock star. There have been many memoir's written, many very self indulging, this is not one of those, this is about what was happening in music and how a young kid found his calling. Enjoy the ride.

Usually I'm a fairly fast reader, but it took me at least six hours to read the first three chapters. It seemed as if almost every paragraph would send me off on a nostalgic trip through my memories of learning to play guitar in the early '60s and onward. Or chasing down a Youtube video that would lead to other videos, or a Google search for more information about a past source of inspiration. And while I was familiar with, and had deep respect for the work of so many of the musicians Steve Katz encountered on his journeys, such as Dave Van Ronk, The Rev. Gary Davis, Stefan Grossman, Ry Cooder, and many more, one doesn't need to be a musician to love this book. It was seeing these legends through Katz's eyes that made them become real people to me. Getting an insider's perspective was a great pleasure. If other readers enjoy the book even half as much as I did they will be very happy they got it. This guy has sold a lot of records...now he's going to sell a lot of books.

Bradford A frank and honest, sometimes self depreciating auto biography from a guy who was in at the ground floor of the beginnings of rock and roll as we knew it back in the day. A must read for all who either were too young or stoned to remember the sixties and seventies.

You’ve finally finished your personal statement and it’s perfect! There’s just one thing to consider before hitting the “send” button — will it meet the admission team’s expectations? How will you know? CASPA guidelines are vague — “Write a brief statement expressing your motivation or desire to become a physician assistant.” School websites aren’t generally more helpful. Do they want to hear that you’ve dreamed of becoming a PA since you were five and loved your toy stethoscope? Are they interested in your volunteer work at a homeless shelter? Will it help that you’ve been a science nerd since 9th grade Biology? How should you tell your story? Should it read like a textbook, a novel or something in between? The fact is there hasn’t been much guidance. Until now. Admissions directors and faculty from PA programs across the country have shared their thoughts on personal statements — what they hope to see, what they wish they’d never see, and tips to make an essay shine. When compiling this book, we realized that access to insider information is just the first step to writing a winning personal statement. That’s why we teach you everything you need to know about essay writing, from form to finesse, with step-by-step tips and examples. This is your all-in-one guide to writing the ideal personal statement for Physician Assistant programs anywhere in the country.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Four chapters and 90 pages. This book gets straight to the point. By HerroGoodbye Fantastic read. If you're applying to PA school, you've most likely taken a writing course or two as an undergrad, written countless papers for other classes, and faced the dreaded GRE's writing portion. You know how to write. But when faced with the personal narrative prompt "write a brief statement expressing your motivation or desire to become a physician assistant.", where do you even begin? And how do you carry that momentum forward into a compelling story that will grant you the invitation for an interview? This book helped me drastically in what was expected in a PA narrative. It covers the things you should do and the mistakes you should avoid. Before reading this book, I felt quite confident in my personal statement. Upon finishing the 90 pages, I realized my essay was great, but not for PA school. I had made several mistakes mentioned in this book, such as focusing too much on certain experiences, and writing excessively about them, instead of focusing on what I have to offer schools.Although this is the only book that I have purchased on writing a personal statement, I would not hesitate to recommend this for others to read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Pretty simple and to the point By Amazon Customer Pretty simple and to the point. This is the only PA personal statement book that I've read but it covered good points and examples that were useful to incorporate into my essay

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A must read for anyone applying to PA school! By Jessica I purchased this book as I was making the finishing touches on my CASPA admission essay and ended up rewriting my entire personal statement This book includes dozens of interviews with PA school faculty along with sample essays and an easy to follow template with practical advice for writing a more "personal", personal statement. Worth every penny!

PDF Ebook La extranjera (Spanish Edition), by Teresa Banning
