Excerpt from The Misuse of Mind: A Study of Bergson's Attack on IntellectualismThe immense popularity which Bergson's philosophy enjoys is sometimes cast up against him, by those who do not agree with him, as a reproach. It has been suggested that Bergson's writings are welcomed simply because they offer a theoretical justification for a tendency which is natural in all of us but against which philosophy has always fought, the tendency to throw reason overboard and just let ourselves go. Bergson is regarded by rationalists almost as a traitor to philosophy, or as a Bolshevik inciting the public to overthrow what it has taken years of painful effort to build up.It is possible that some people who do not understand this philosophy may use Bergson's name as a cloak for giving up all self-direction and letting themselves go intellectually to pieces, just as hooligans may use a time of revolution to plunder in the name of the Red Guard. But Bergson's philosophy is in reality as far from teaching mere laziness as Communism is from being mere destruction of the old social order.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Most Dangerous Animal of All: Searching for My Father . . . and Finding the Zodiac Killer, by Gary L. Stewart, Susan Mustafa

Review “I promise that you’ve never read anything like The Most Dangerous Animal of All. Mesmerizing from the first page, the story includes a shattering surprise that will sear itself in your memory. Be prepared to read non-stop; this really is a book you won’t be able to put down.” (Jeff Guinn, author of Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson)“Convincing....The author painstakingly pieces together over a decade’s worth of personal research and verbatim interviews with family, friends and law enforcement, then goes further to scrutinize and compare handwriting samples, police sketches and photographs, all bearing uncanny resemblances to recorded documentation from the Zodiac files.” (Kirkus)

I think the case is solved with this By grounden1985 Before anyone throws accusations around, I don't know the author.I'm a true crime fan who was skeptical about this book like many others, but I have to say the evidence the author provides throughout the 360 or so pages is more than compelling. It would be idiotic to write it off as nothing or a mere coincidence if one is being honest with themselves.Since I know many people just want to read the reviews and glean evidence from them, I'll list what evidence the author presents in the book to back up the claim the Zodiac was his father, Earl Van Best Jr.:-A fingerprint of his father has a scar that is nearly identical to one seen on a print left at the Stine murder. A photocopy of the prints is presented side by side in the hardback and even a layman can see the scars are the same angle and length.-A handwriting expert testified that the handwriting on Earl's marriage certificates (filled out by Earl himself) is the same handwriting as that in the Zodiac's letters, even stating he would testify to this in court if he was asked to. A document containing his response to the handwriting comparison is also included in the book.-Earl Van Best Junior is in one of the Zodiac's ciphers--every letter. A test to see if one can find other names in the cipher, like Mary Smith (for example) yields no results, yet every letter of Earl Van Best Junior is there in a cipher the Zodiac said contained his identity? That's a mighty coincidence!-Another cipher contains Earl's initials, making that two ciphers matching his name.-A Zodiac letter was signed "EV"--the initials for "Earl Van."-The mug shot of Earl is virtually identical to the police sketch of the Zodiac.-Earl lived in San Francisco at the time of the murders and, despite being in jail or mental hospitals several times, was always free on the dates of the murders.-Earl was highly educated and knew The Mikado by heart. The Zodiac quoted from The Mikado.-Earl joked with friends in high school about killing people and was obsessed with dark thoughts.-Earl left San Francisco around the same time the Zodiac murders ended.-All of the female victims resembled Earl's second wife, whom had scorned him and refused to see him when their marriage ended.-The man in charge of the case deemed the author's story credible enough to warrant testing him for DNA, which would cost the department $1500. The DNA was never ran, as Hennessey (the homicide detective) was removed from the case before it could be done. This is only some of the evidence discussed in the book. There is more I'm leaving out.Like I said, people will believe what they want, but in my opinion, the author's evidence is more than convincing to warrant a serious investigation into his claims and I believe it is the most compelling evidence for a potential suspect we have seen, even stronger than Arthur Leigh Allan. I believe this man was indeed the Zodiac killer and this book is a breakthrough people should be discussing seriously instead of dismissing as a money-making scheme. There is too much evidence here to outright discount it and it's too much to be merely a coincidence. That's my honest opinion.EDIT: I did an Internet search trying to back up some of the author's tale and there are postings on ancestry boards written under the author's name that date back to 2005. One of his father's friends also responded to his postings and gave him some of the information contained in this book, and it is all there on the forums on these websites with times and dates, proving he has been researching this for years. I thought it would be worth it to include this information in my review, as it backs up the author's claims and verifies his story.

By W Perry Hall I'm surprised to see the ultra-negative reviews, many of which appear to have been written by those who haven't read it or microscope its flaws. I found this a compelling 5 STAR book, for revelations of not only the Zodiac's identity, but the impact of SF politics on a murder investigation and later, a cover-up.I think the author has nailed it, when I consider:(a) the credibility of both the presenter and the publisher (HarperCollins);(b) the opinion of an esteemed handwriting expert of a 99% definite match between several documents written/signed by Van Earl Best, Jr. and those written by the Zodiac;(c) the name VE Best, Jr. is embedded in TWO (2) of the Zodiac ciphers;(d) both the Zodiac and VE Best, Jr., had identical scars on the same index finger; and,(e) a number of other significant pieces of persuasive circumstantial evidence, too many to list in this review.-While the author also provides a compelling case for motive, means and opportunity (some of which he admittedly embellished), these elements would not be needed to convict. An antiseptic listing of the evidence above without discussing MMO would amount to a news article and otherwise bore one to tears. What's missing for a slamdunk "beyond a reasonable doubt" case is a DNA match. Mr. Stewart and his biological mom have offered DNA to an independent expert who now holds the markers to match to the Zodiac's DNA. Eight years ago, Stewart gave a DNA sample to the SFPD, who buried it.From all that appears, the SFPD Blue Wall has stalled for nearly a decade now, beginning with closing the 35-year investigation **the week the author began making inquiries for the Best file.** The SFPD powers are apparently trying to protect a late popular police detective, Rotea Gilford, because he married the Zodiac's former wife (author's biological mom) notwithstanding that he seems to have been a bit player in occasionally helping the investigation's lead detectives, Toschi and Armstrong. Significantly, the only thing casting a negative light on Gilford appears to be this concealment.SFPD since 2004: "To hell with the public's interest and the victims' families; we'll do as we damn well please!" In 1969 and part of 1970, the Zodiac mercilessly taunted and wrongly ridiculed the SFPD as inept "piggies." The SFPD bosses probably don't even see the irony in cloaking the investigation into the Zodiac's identity all these years later. Can I find something to criticize? Yes. Some of the section on the author's investigation repeated what he already included in his father's life story (making it repetitive and superfluous, and likely would have been trimmed if the book hadn't been rushed to print). I also thought the discussion much too lengthy of the relationship between the author's biological mother and her husband (the SF detective), presumably intended to bend over backward in appearing not to be pointing the finger at him.All in all though, I just wanted to keep reading and reading. Not only about the Zodiac but about his son's search for, and coming to terms with, the Truth.I just hope to hell this puts continued pressure on the higher-ups in the SFPD to stop looking out for numero uno!

32 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Identity Solved By Gregory A. Walker I grew up in the Bay Area during the Zodiac murders. And I've read several very well written books over the years regarding the investigation.I just finished "The Most Dangerous Animal of All" - it took me two days to do so - I simply could not put it down.As an honorably retired law enforcement officer I came away knowing - in my professional mind - Mr. Stewart has indeed and very courageously / painfully properly identified the Zodiac and having been his biologicial father. Why the SFPD was / remains so evasive on this subject is likewise understandable (but not acceptable) to me.Law enforcement agencies are a culture and entity unto themselves. From mid-level management to the upper echelons of authority and power the unspoken objective is to always protect the organization - always. No doubt this cultural thought process is alive and well at SFPD in specific respect to the Zodiac case - a case it never solved and a case where the suspect indeed rubbed their noses in "it" year after year. Some mysteries are meant to be resolved by "the least among us". Gary Stewart is that person who as "the least among us" was abused and abandoned by his biological father and should have died, by all accounts, under the circumstances. The son has grown to be a valuable and forthright human being as well as man. And he has revealed the father for who and what he was...and the rightful ending that is the just reward for his crimes.Beautifully written, a page turner, well illustrated and with a positive and hopeful message at its conclusion.Five stars.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. In the tradition of Miller, Bukowski, Christiane F... By Stephen Marshall there is a literary tradition that bends toward the self-destroyer. whether that is the pursuit of protagonists into the hell of their immolating soul. or out from that place into moments of resurrection. you know them. whether its Bukowski, Camus, or Christiane F. whether it's all true or riddled with lies, they make great reading for the experientialist who wants to live in a deathwishist's skin.i have read a lot of these books throughout my life. probably starting with the early Balzac editions from La Comédie Humaine, and most specifically, the insanely tragic Lost Illusions. i even remember standing at the book stall in a Barnes and Noble one afternoon and reading the entirety of Slash's bio in one go. it was epic.and so it goes that people we meet in our lives have lived these thousand deaths. and some of them, also, have the humility, courage, and poeticism to write about it. and some even do it well. one of these walks among us.Dave Darmstaedter was a high-level male model who descended into wild and brutalizing drug use until he was dropped by his agents and agencies and forced to take work in the porn industry to keep his habits enthroned. but the story begins, and ends, with his life as a recovering addict and single father in Hollywood during the 90's. it's dark, tragic, funny, and ultimately viscerally real. there is hope here, but it comes in small envelopes. here's a taste:"I look out of the window over the sink. The moon is still out. It's that time, seconds before dawn when it's still dark but you can see things better than the dead of night. I get a view even if it is over the top of the buildings in back of ours, through black telephone cable wires and satellite dishes. I can see the tops of the palm trees that line Beechwood Street. The long hanging palms look black. Better than the sick green look they have in the light of day. I've been to Hawaii. I've seen healthy palm trees with rich green palms hanging. I think about how I used to go to Hawaii from New York and kick heroin on my way to Japan to clean up for those forty thousand dollar a month modeling contracts in the eighties. Four rough days curled up in a Wakiki Hotel then gradually making my way back into the sun; going to beaches all over the Island, swimming, snorkeling, surfing, getting all tan and healthy.I wash the dishes and watch the black sky turn orange and blue in the sunrise. I feel a soothing warmth come over my body as I give myself to the sky. I'm in it. In the sky. In the world. In the universe. Melting. Magic. Power. God. The dishes done with a smile. Easy. Sweet. Brief reprieves that keep my monster mind at bay."the fact that the book is now available on Kindle for $3.99 is its own kind of fiction. because we have now arrived at a place in the digital economy where these experiences can be had for so little that we kind of lose a sense of their traction in the world. that they are real, that they have value for us. i highly recommend the book. not because it will drop you to the floor. or tell you things you've never heard before. it has not been written for that sensationalist feedback loop. no, i have this one in my shelf because it is the profound artifact of a life lived in the face of punishing humiliation and redeeming self-objectification.

A RAW, POWERFUL AND DARK-HEARTED MIRACLE By Jerry Stahl I don't trust anybody who hasn't been to hell, and David Darmstaedter got his passport stamped there early and often. That he survived his own life is remarkable enough, that he managed to turn the whole crawl over broken glass into the festival of pain, drugs, sex, madness, heart and - yes - genuine, soul-searing beauty that fills My Monster stands out as a miracle of a whole other order. In a world of faux-badass, Look-At-Me, I'm-Damaged! tomes of one-downsmanship and front, Darmstaedter stands as that most exotic of authors: the real goddamn thing. By the time you finish this book, you won't just want to tell you'll friends, you'll be ripping strangers out of their cars and shoving copies into their hands, screaming at them through foam-flecked lips to just shut up and read it. I really loved this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. nicbooklover By nicbooklover This a beautiful story of the truth of what lives in the heart of a single father trying to take care of his son while in his own emotional struggles. Dave's honest and melodically expressive voice reverberates what so many people really feel, but never have to courage to say. He allows the reader into what goes on inside him, his thoughts, his fears, his hopes, his lack of hope, his needs... without holding anything back. In this book we travel into his mind and his life in LA, moment by moment as he searches deep inside himself to overcome things he feels incapable of conquering... the writing is so human, so raw and so filled with a uniquely honest voice, you will want more and always remember after reading. It is the greatest art that takes the risk to tell the truth of the human soul, and Dave's book is a living testament to this truth, to this humanity that only great artists can dig up. As he plunges into himself he uncovers the depths of man. For those lucky enough to have experienced Dave's live readings of the book, there was always an evoking of so many emotions, his journey goes from a kind of twisted humour, to sadness, to joy, to hope, when he thinks there's none left... People are on the edges of their seats whilst they hear Dave's inner life... even through his sometimes anger, there is such undeniable love. In this unpretentious confessional approach to literature it makes one think of their own lives and thankfully there is such an artist as Dave Darmstaedter, to get under his skin and theirs. I highly recommend this special and precious book, and all it's secrets, and all it's soul.

From the bestselling author of Robert Black: The True Story of a Child Rapist and Serial Killer

A harmless-looking man moved to Montreal looking for a new start and to get off drugs. Somewhere along the line, his urge to prey on unsuspecting women, something he'd done and kept a secret for twenty years, became too much to keep inside. William Fyfe, aka "The Killer Handyman," snapped, leaving at least nine women brutally beaten, murdered and sexual abused (post-mortem). If not for the diligent work of a criminal forensic specialist and her discovery of a single fingerprint, Fyfe may have continued to kill at will, keeping Montreal residents, particularly single middle-aged women, frightened and sequestered in their own homes. From the bestselling author of Robert Pickton: The Pig Farmer Killer Website - www.CRIMESCANADA.com This is the 7th book in a 24 volume series collection, edited by crime historian Dr. Peter Vronsky and true crime author and publisher RJ Parker. Each month we will publish a book of some of Canada's most notorious shocking criminals, written by various authors, and published under VP Publications.

By Michael Another fine addition to the Crimes Canada series under the direction of RJ Parker. Swinney really has a problem on his hands because although we know many of the details of the crimes he committed, the reader is left wondering about the motive. Most serial killers are caught up in an endless cycle that will continue unless stopped by law enforcement. Many of these killers have done at least a little reflection on why they chose to engage in these activities. Ted Bundy, for example, provided numerous accounts for his actions, even if the reader decides that it's simple rationalization. What makes Fyfe interesting is that he refuses to discuss or speculate on the motives for his crimes: "That's for me to know." For this reason, I give high marks to Swinney because he tackles a subject who refuses to reveal the inner workings of his own mind. The book is baffling, entertaining, and well researched. Please continue to write for your eager audience!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Account but Limited By Kindle Customer The information provided regarding the criminal career of William Fyfe is limited and therefore this book doesn't have a lot to add as far as why he committed them or what caused him to behave in such a vicious manner. Mr. Swinney provides his own speculations based upon a career in law enforcement, so they carry some weight. However, in the end, there are more questions remaining than answers.

I find it very disturbing in Canada there is only a 25 year sentence for committing 1 or 25 murders. Chris Sweeny hit this out of the park. Captivating and graphic!

Lawrence is better known for his various novels, i.e., Women in Love; Lady Chatterly's Lover; and Sons and Lovers than for his travel writing. With that said, I highly recommend this book. Personally I love Lawrence's writing style and this particular book is exceptional even for Lawrence. You will feel as though you are there with him experiencing the moment he is describing. The people and places of Italy come alive through his prose. His writing moves, at times, from reality and physical descriptions to abstraction and philosophy, but it is so wonderfully written, you will cherish every word and never question the move from one to the other. Images abound in this work and the scenes he describes are beautifully sensual. I have read this work twice and plan on reading it numerous other times throughout my life.

Lawrence writes poetically--never mind the sportswriters' rule against repeating the same word in a sentence ("Angels," "Seraphs," "Halos")--this author uses "dark" numerous times in a single paragraph. I felt as though I were in northern Italy with him. Incredible. Also recommended are his other travel works, such as Sea and Sardinia and Mornings in Mexico.

Lawrence's fiction, but we've mostly forgotten about his amazing travel writing. Twilight in Italy takes us on a foot tour of the Alps all the way down into the verdant gardens and sun soaked plaza's of Italy. Lawrence, as always, finds small stories here and there that not only share a sense of place but also relate the experience of a real traveler. If you are a fan of Paul Theroux or Pico Iyer you will immediately feel at home with this book.

This e-book is based on Goethe's revision of 1787. It contains parts one and two, with some good illustrations in the back: portraits of "the real Charlotte," of Goethe as a young man, and some of the popular illustrations for the bestselling 18th Century edition.Of course I read this book long ago, about the age of Werther, or Goethe himself when he wrote this impassioned (Leiden = passions, sufferings) epistolary novel. Reading it today, when my own Sturm und Drang period is well behind me, it was harder to sympathize with Werther, and easier to see his "love" as neurotic- infantile, narcissistic, what have you. Werther seems to feed on its very hopelessness.Goethe used Werther to exorcise his own young self (the book is clearly autobiographical)- he could simultaneously be the young letter writer, and look down, or back, at him. Here is a sample of the German:"... Die Kutsche fuhr vorbei, und eine Träne stand mir im Auge. Ich sah ihr nach und sah Lottens Kopfputz sich zum Schlage herauslehnen, und sie wandte sich um zu sehen, ach! Nach mir? - Lieber! In dieser Ungewissheit schwebe ich; das ist mein Trost: vielleicht hat sie sich nach mir umgesehen! Vielleicht! - Gute Nacht! The best English version remains Steinhauer's: The Sufferings of Young Werther

It allows the reader to experience the ups and downs of the irrational main character as he falls blindly and passionately in love with a married woman. Werther is the most passionate character ever created in literature, becoming possessed by nature, love, and himself. Although he sees his own destruction coming, he can and will do nothing to stop it. The first book is mostly autobiographical, based on Goethe's love for Charlotte Buff. Book two is a mor ebiographical account of one of Goethe's acquaintances. The story is truly captivating and emotionally draining. The language, in the English and even more so in the German, is powerful and fits perfectly to the overall mood of the story. There is beautiful imagery and the role of nature is carefully portrayed. This book should be read by all.

An incisive critique of bourgeois vices By Peter Capofreddi In the Enlightenment attempt to justify the institutions of bourgeois liberalism, one of the most glaring failures is the case of punishment. The Enlightenment can prove that a certain kind of peace is possible among those who accept its peculiar form of bourgeois reason. But the cruel treatment of dissenters who are either unable or unwilling to accept this sort of rationality—for this the Enlightenment has no justification. In a conversation with his bourgeois rival Albert, Werther brings up this unpaid debt of the Enlightenment. What should we say about a thief who steals to feed his starving children? Who would cast the first stone at him?A man overcome with passion, says Albert, loses his senses, as if he were drunk or insane. Rational, reasonable bourgeois people like Albert designate the dissenter who refuses to accept their form of rationality as an outsider, who, because of his so-called irrationality is unworthy of sympathy. The cold-blooded cruelty of the bourgeois regime is rationalized by precisely such dehumanization of its victims. The fundamental principle of the Enlightenment, as Kant would articulate it, is that each individual mind must overcome its self-imposed immaturity and learn to think without guidance from another. While the middle class of the eighteenth century were proud that the philosophical representatives of their age had overcome the superstitions of earlier ages and emerged from their state of self-imposed immaturity, individual bourgeois minds were by no means prepared to make this emergence themselves.Werther is frustrated because he speaks “from his whole heart,” while Albert only replies with “meaningless platitudes.” Albert can’t be forced to think about who will cast the first stone at the poor thief, because public institutions, which feel no mercy, are perfectly willing to cast the stone on his behalf. Albert isn’t forced to think. Therefore, he doesn’t want to think. To this end, he has at his disposal many rough and ready phrases that can defuse such uncomfortable questions without demanding even the slightest glimmer of sincere thought. The bourgeois mind remains in its own peculiar state of self-imposed immaturity, in which phrases prepared in advance under the guidance of others can be assembled without guidance from others, but individual words cannot. We might draw an analogy between Werther’s frustrated attempts to draw Albert into a sincere debate about bourgeois morality and Socrates’ frustrated attempts to embroil his conversation partners in serious philosophical debates. Under no circumstance does Albert want to think for himself. All Werther’s attempts are therefore useless. The foremost reasons the majority of minds insist on remaining immature, according to Kant, are indolence and cowardice. Middle class functionaries like Albert call themselves “reasonable people,” but the reason they use isn’t Kant’s reason, which can think without direction from another, but a fraudulent bourgeois form of reason that consists of no more than meaningless platitudes—platitudes that seek to legitimize and rationalize precisely the indolence and cowardice Kant so detests.Werther draws an analogy between the coldhearted reason of the middle class and the coldhearted legalism of the Pharisees. The indolence and cowardice of the middle class, just like that of the Pharisees, consists in this—they aren’t ruled by themselves, but rather by a faceless, cold-blooded and formalistic legalism. Werther explains the mistake of the middle class with a parable. A horse is impatient to do something. So he lets himself be saddled. Later, as his owner rides him to death, he regrets his decision. As I interpret the parable, the horse represents the conscience of the bourgeois. The owner represents things the bourgeois respects like money, reputation and law. In exchange for a comfortable salary, a bourgeois functionary like Albert sacrifices the authority to think for himself. From now on he must accept arguments, no matter how illogical, when they come from his superiors. The bourgeois can therefore no longer be a philosopher. It’s useless to try to change his mind, because his mind no longer belongs to him—and, as Werther explains, “When we lack ourselves, we lack everything.”Werther elucidates the mistake of the middle class not only parabolically, but also explicitly. “A man who works at another’s will, not for his own passion or his own need, but for money or honor, is always a fool.” The bourgeois is so eager to obtain the money and honor that allow him to rule his subordinates, in exchange he makes himself into a servile subordinate. Werther, on the other hand, loves his freedom and independence. Under no circumstance will he submit to the will of a superior whom he doesn’t recognize as a better, more virtuous man.In a 1992 essay, J. M. Coetzee describes Erasmus’s technique for offering philosophical critiques of contemporary society in fiction. According to Coetzee, Erasmus deliberately puts his cutting critiques in the mouth of a character intended to be perceived as a fool. He does this in order to present contentious ideas as uncontentiously as possible, taking them, as Coetzee says, “off the stage of political rivalry.” This is a way of presenting a statement that, politically speaking, must be false, because it is utterly incompatible with the way society is organized, and yet at the same time, in other important senses, is very true.We know, for example, that the nominally adult bourgeois chases money, and the sensory pleasures it procures, with the same eager avidity of a boy awaiting cookies and cakes. But we would really prefer not to be reminded of this. Goethe wants to remind his bourgeois readers that we’re all servile cowards, without prompting us to slam the book shut in indignation, and thus lose the opportunity to hear all Goethe’s other biting criticisms of bourgeois life. He therefore puts his criticisms in the mouth of a character prone to hyperemotionality, sentimentality and exaggeration.By putting his criticisms in the mouth of the emotionally fragile Werther, Goethe gives his readers what we might call a "time-release capsule of thought." Because Werther is so emotional and sentimental, we dismiss his criticisms as absurd when we first hear them. But, at the same time, they’re expressed so eloquently that we’re unlikely to forget them. We recall them later when we ourselves are exasperated with bourgeois life, and in the mood to listen to criticisms.

Pieces of My Mother: A Memoir, by Melissa Cistaro

Review "This is an astonishing book, full of heartbreak and love and hard-won wisdom. Melissa Cistaro writes beautifully not just about her search for the mother who abandoned her, but about the myriad ways parents and children don't and do connect. Told in vivid scenes and through the texts of letters her mother never sent, Cistaro chronicles a journey that goes way past forgiveness to true understanding." - Will Schwalbe, bestselling author of The End Of Your Life Book Club"Sometimes we are defined as much by the person who is missing as the person who is there. Melissa Cistaro has a story to tell and one you don't hear every day. I was deeply moved from word one." - Kelly Corrigan, bestselling memoirist of The Middle Place, Lift, and Glitter & Glue"Melissa Cistaro's imagery is startling and vivid, her story brutally honest and devoid of judgment. Pieces of My Mother is a story that lingers in the heart long after the last page is turned." - Hope Edelman, bestselling author of Motherless Daughters and The Possibility of Everything "Full of hope, regret and lessons learned, Pieces of My Mother is a unique and compelling look at how profoundly mothers affect our lives. Whether absent or hauntingly close, longing for a mother can force a child into maturity beyond her years, and garner her with a lifetime of longing. This book is as lyrical as it is honest, as humorous as it is heartbreaking." - Monica Holloway, bestselling author of Cowboy & Wills and Driving with Dead People"Heartbreaking in its simplicity, Pieces of My Mother is Melissa Cistaro's attempt to shed some much needed light on her dark past...a tentative, poignant, painful exploration that welcomes complexity, forgiveness, and empathy. " - Sahar's Reviews"Weeks after I read the last gorgeous page of Pieces of My Mother, I still find myself thinking about Melissa Cistaro and her complex, maddening and fascinating mother. What caused this woman to walk out of her house one afternoon, leaving the children she loved behind? As Melissa puts the pieces together we are treated to an outstanding memoir written with tenderness, wit and depth. " - Elaine Petrocelli, Book Passage, San Francisco, CA"An honest and affecting story of the many complexities involved with family relationships." - Kirkus"At three, Cistaro watched her mother sob in the driver's seat of her car through the window in her bedroom. Minutes later, her mother drove off, removing herself from the traditional role. Thirty six years later, Cistaro leaves her family on Christmas Day to sit by her mother's bedside as she succumbs to cirrhosis. Challenged to piece together a woman she barely knows, Cistaro takes the reader into her world, her story. Weaving between Now and Then, Cistaro tells of life with and without her mother. And without her." - April Gosling, Boulder Bookstore (Boulder, CO)"Truly wonderful. Not your typical dysfunctional family memoir. I thought the structure - alternating scenes of her dyeing mother with the past was brilliant." - Suzy Staubach, U Conn Co-op (Storrs, CT)"Filled with moments of poignancy and grace, Melissa Cistaro's beautiful book lands on a gorgeous note of redemption. I loved it." - Lolly Winston, bestselling author of Good Grief and Happiness Sold Separately

THEN a house underwater

Bun-Bun notices my mom outside before I do. He tells me about it. We watch her walk toward her car. She's wearing her summer dress that is the color of ripe avocados. Her brown purse, slung over her shoulder, is as fat as the raccoon that crawls into our garbage cans late at night, and she has an armful of clothes hooked into her elbow. Her favorite coat drops onto the pavement. It doesn't look like a coat the way it crumples up on the ground.

I know that coat so well, every bit of tan, brown, yellow, and red-every small wooden button. So many times I have traced the curling patterns and small rows of dots with my fingertip, and my mom always reminds me that the pattern is called "paisley." She turns around, picks up her favorite paisley coat, and tosses it on top of the pile of clothes she's already put in the backseat of her blue car, then slams the car door shut.

As she turns around to look back at the house, I have Bun-Bun do a little wave and a dance as I duck below the window in my room. She'll think Bun-Bun has really come to life. His tan head and floppy ears are made of real rabbit fur that only recently began to shed around his green eyes and on the tips of his ears. I know how to make him look like he's hopping through a field. I lift my eyes just above the ledge. My mom is standing next to the car looking down at her feet.

I am supposed to be taking a nap, but it's too hot and I don't like to sleep. During nap time my whole room comes to life and anything can happen. Stuffed animals talk to each other, fairies fly out of the wall sockets, and plastic horses gallop across the hardwood floor. My brother told me that when I'm five like him, I won't have to stay in my room during nap time.

For days now the air has been like fire, so hot that it ripples above the concrete and makes things outside look like they are underwater. It is the kind of heat that has made our next-door neighbor's dogs hide underneath our house where it's cool and dusty. Mr. Bird, who owns the dogs, came over and told us this just yesterday.

"Dogs know what to do with themselves when California heats up like this, but not people," he said. "It's the kind of heat that could cause some folks to snap." And when he said that word, "snap," he took the toothpick out of his teeth and broke it in two. Then he laughed like he thought he was clever. Later, I saw his broken toothpick on our porch and kicked it into the dead grass where it got lost in all the yellow.

I open my bedroom door and peer into the living room. My brother Eden is asleep on the couch with a box of Lucky Charms wedged underneath his arm. The TV is on and I watch for a moment as Underdog flies across the gray screen, and I remember that my brother Jamie isn't here. He's almost six and the oldest. He left the house earlier to go swimming in his friend Bobby Winston's pool. My mom was mad when Mrs. Winston showed up early to grab Jamie for swimming. She told Mrs. Winston that she only had two cigarettes left and didn't want to go out to the store in the heat.

When Mom is out of cigarettes, she counts on Jamie to be here with Eden and me so she can run down to the corner market. If she has to wait too long to get them, the house begins to swell with noise-the clap of cupboards opening and closing, the crack of the ice-cube tray slamming against the counter, and her voice rising over ours like a mockingbird.

I wish that Mrs. Winston had offered to lend her some cigarettes or get her some, but she didn't. She just pointed to her hairdo, which she called a "beehive," and said, "This darn heat is just killing me and my hair too."

After Mrs. Winston left, my mom said she thought that hairstyle looked "goddamn ridiculous." I picked up the box of cigarettes lying on the table and carried it to my mom. She tapped the last two out of the package. Then we sat side by side on the plaid couch as she smoked each of them. Out of her red shiny lips came rings of smoke like little white doughnuts floating through the air. I reached up and stuck my finger through the center of one. She pulled my arm away and whispered, "No, just watch."

She said she liked it when the rings began to lose their shape and stretch out. She said they were beautiful the way they disappeared. I didn't like it when they went away. I preferred it when they first came out of her red lips and looked like powdered doughnuts.

"Make more," I said. And she did, like magic, over and over.

With my brother Eden asleep and Underdog ducking back into a telephone booth, I sneak past them and into the kitchen where our old fan is clunking around in circles, but no cool air is coming out. On the counter there is a pitcher of sticky orange Kool-Aid with three black flies floating on the surface. The sight of the soggy flies makes me uneasy, and in an instant, the heat feels like it will swallow me. I want my dad to come home from work.

I race back to the window in my room to see if my mom is coming back in. She is standing in the same place. I want to tell her that it is too hot out there for her, that she could melt. But she's stuck out there, it seems, and I'm stuck in here.

I need her to come back in the house. I need her to tell me that nap time is over and that tonight we will go to Fosters Freeze where the ice cream races out of a noisy machine and into perfect swirls of vanilla and chocolate.

Instead, she opens the car door and gets in. I lay my hand against my bedroom window. The glass is warm and it feels like I can almost reach her.

I know this is not a trip to get cigarettes.

I want to yell out to her: "Please don't leave..." I am trying to say it. But nothing comes out. I just watch her without blinking once. Bun-Bun and I both have stupid plastic eyes and sewed-on mouths. Inside of us there is nothing but sawdust.

Then I see her mouth break open wide like a fish gasping for air. She is crying inside her car. The air wobbles above the concrete. Everything is underwater. It crosses my mind that I could swim to her if I knew how. Jamie does; he would swim to her if he were here.

I press my forehead against the glass and swallow every word I know. Underwater, everything is quiet and full of ripples. My mom is a mermaid as she swims away from me, her thick hair waving like strands of long seaweed. I don't hear the sound of the car engine starting up, but I watch as my mom backs up and drives away in her baby-blue Dodge Dart.

Jamie says he was bad and that's why Mom left. Eden cries the most and spends extra time in the backyard looking for gypsy moths and black crickets to kill. I collect small boxes from around the house-empty Band-Aid tins, Lipton Tea containers, and Lucky Strike matchboxes. They are tiny suitcases that I can hide things in. Anything I want: buttons, bad thoughts, daisy petals, and even the shiny sequins that fall off my Christmas stocking. I put these small boxes just beneath my windowsill, all lined up and in order, and keep them there so that I can show them to my mom when she comes back.

Our dad tells us she's taking "a break" from us for a while but he doesn't like to talk about it. Jamie says maybe we will see her when the weather cools down. Or maybe she will come if one of us has a birthday. I keep hoping it is all a mistake. When I hear laughing late at night outside our house, I stay awake in case it is her coming back. And sometimes I hear the radio next door shouting out songs she would sing along to. I can feel her swaying me in her arms and singing "Good-bye, Ruby Tuesday." I am waiting for her to come bolting through the front door and never stop hugging us again.

A sitter, who is not our mom, comes to live at our house so our dad can go back to work. And when that sitter gets tired of us, a new one arrives. Everyone says I am too young to remember what's happened and that children my age simply don't remember the details. I can't blame them for saying that. But I am as quiet as a cat, watching everyone and everything.

By SundayAtDusk There's no shortage of contemporary memoirs about mothers, particularly mothers who did not excel in mothering. Melissa Cistaro has added a new one to the list, and it is definitely a worthwhile one to read. When Ms. Cistaro was three, her mother packed up all her stuff in her car one day and drove away, leaving the author and her two brothers to be raised by their father. She still saw her mother at times throughout her childhood, but those visits weren't particularly productive and her mother always left again. The story not only concentrates on those mostly motherless childhood years, but also on the trip the author made when she was in her late 30s to see her dying mother one last time. Ms. Cistaro does an excellent job going back and forth between the two time periods, too; there is no confusion about what's going on or when something happened. During that final visit, the author discovers letters her mother wrote to her children and others, but never mailed. She reads some of those letters while she's at her mother's home, and then takes them home with her when she returns to her husband and two children. The author appears to see those letters as being insightful and loving. My views on them are far less generous. I'm afraid I don't see it as being any great loss that her mother never mailed them. In fact, I thought at least she had the decency not to mail her narcissistic letters, filled with all her claims of care and concern! Talk is cheap and the letters were nothing but talk. Ironically, I thought the most nauseating one was the one Ms. Cistaro thought for sure proved her mother's love and interest in her life--the one where she asks her daughter to tell her about any "special fellows". All I could do while reading that letter was picture a young, naive teenage girl with a nasty boy at a dance, or a not much older teenager girl walking quickly down a deserted road at night, trying to get away from a creepy guy wanting to give her a ride. It's impossible not to imagine her mother kept all those letters she wrote for no other reason than she was impressed by her own "eloquent" writing. The author's views of her mother's writings are indeed very generous. In one way that is refreshing since there has been so much mommy bashing going on in today's memoirs. But is she being too generous? It's her mother and her choice. Moreover, where she mentally ends up at the end of the book is basically where everyone should end up when it comes to parents--you get who you get and it's your job to make sense of it all, as well as to realize you are responsible for your own life. Contrary to what self-righteous people like to believe, an apple can fall very far from the tree. When Melissa Cistaro realized that one miserable night as a teenager, she began to acquire the personal strength that she lacked due to her negligent, absent mother. Strength no one could take away from her because it wasn't given to her, but was so hard earned.

Self-Centered Mom Splits and Never Leaves A Good Excuse Why By G.I Gurdjieff This book turned out to not be what I was expecting or what I would hope it to be. Pieces Of My Mother is Melissa Cistaro's account of living without her mother. At the age of three, Melissa's mother loaded her belongings into her blue car and drove away. It wasn't an unexpected departure, but an open ended one. Melissa and her two brothers had no idea when their mother would return, but years went by where birthdays were ignored. Even when the mother returned for brief visits and would seemingly be gone before her presence was actually felt, it didn't seem to mean much. The kids were cared for and probably felt loved as what seemed like a virtual army of caretakers came and went. It was only when Melissa was a mother herself to two children that she reconnected with her mother. The reunion was not particularly joyous. Her mother was dying of liver cancer and cirosis. As she came to visit, she found a stash of unmailed and undated letters from her mother.Melissa pieces together the letters in some sort of chronological order and also manages to flip from anecdotes about growing up without a mother, her vague memories of her mother when she surfaced during her intermittent visits and before she left the family home entirely. During these interludes we do find out that Melissa's mother came from a long line of mothers who abandoned their families. As for the letters themselves that Melissa appears to believe reflect a caring woman and mother, my main impression was that the mother was self-centered and probably should have never married in the first place. I suspect that readers who are mothers themselves may agree with me. As I read these 'letters' I just couldn't warm to this woman and I found that I had no sympathy for her. I couldn't connect with the mother on any level. I did not get any answers as to why this woman could justify leaving her kids. The saving grace to this book is Melissa's writing talent. She was warm and open as she let us view her motherless life and at times sort of funny as she has a definite way with words. If Melissa wasn't a likeable person and a legitimately good writer, I wouldn't have stuck with this story. I was glad Melissa wasn't her mother.

Collins A special thank you to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for an ARC exchange for an honest review.Melissa Cistaro courageously steps out to deliver a poignant memoir, PIECES OF MY MOTHER, a heartbreaking story, drawn from memory, letters, and early recollections of her own childhood and family trials. While trying to sort out her troubled family and a mother who left when she was a small girl, she reflects as a grown woman, while looking at her own family, and wonders genetics can spill over and make you question yourself as a mother. Are we destined to repeat our past environment?Perfect timing as we approach Mother’s Day, to appreciate our mothers, and realize some children do not always have the proper parents—ones to love and protect them, to serve as viable role models for their children. These children grow up always wondering if they were to blame for their parent’s absence, and desperately seek love and validation. As a child, Melissa sees her mother drive off while her dad informs the family their mother is "taking a break" from everyone and not very forthcoming about the details. They can only hope she will return for their birthday, or possibly a special holiday. However, when she does, is she really there? She and her brothers--Jamie and Eden, alone without a mother. Now a mother herself, how can she tell her daughter a dark truth, she was leavable and unkeepable. What if there is some sort of genetic family flaw, some kind of leaving gene that unexpectedly grabs hold of mothers like the ones in her family? What if the gene is lying dormant inside of her? What if her own daughter worries she may leave one day?She pictures her mom, a thousand miles away, and only visiting a few times, while each of the children carried "her leaving" in different ways. She took all the colors with her. She drifted in and out of their lives like live-in sitters, always seeming just out of reach. She wants her own daughter to feel safe and loved, not left the way she has always felt. Now years later, a mom with children of her own, she finds herself in Washington, as her mother is dying. Her mom has cirrhosis and liver cancer; all the years of drinking have caught up with her. All her fears surface. She is leaving once again. She will only be sixty five in five days and she promises her own family she will be home by New Year’s Eve. Her own family needs her and wants to make sure she WILL return. Her mom is as mysterious as ever, yet her mother surrounds herself with bits and pieces of life collected; a life she never really knew – the books she loved. Melissa began to fill her own notebooks, only attempting to understand her mom’s leaving, searching for memories that could rescue her. Believing that if she could dig up the goodness in the things that haunted her, there would be a chance she could save her mom, her brothers, her dad, and herself. If she can get the words right, maybe she can keep her alive. She wants desperately to understand a woman who is dying. As she is going through her mother’s things, she finds folders, letters, treasures, and all the while she recalls the days she was afraid to move to yet another house, for the fear her mom may not be able to find them; if and when, she would come back. Now, letters her mom never sent may provide her comfort and answers. Her mom and dad were both hoarders, coveting treasures and not one of these items will keep her alive. She too suffers from hanging on to things. However, as she reads her mom’s letters, thirty-six years have passed since she watched the her mom drive away in her baby-blue Dodge Dart, she still wonders what if she had called out to her, would she have stayed? Now she has to make the decision to leave her mom to die, to get back to her own family and a miracle of her own.A deeply moving complex, honest portrayal of family, of motherhood, yet uplifting and captivating; alternating between Melissa and her mother, we see firsthand how a parent’s choices impact their children’s lives for generations to come with emotional devastation. From regret, understanding, acceptance, to forgiveness; a book of the strong bonds of love and motherhood. What doesn't kill you, will fortunately make you stronger.

As someone who suffered from Post Partum Depression I had no idea what was happening to me or that what I was going through had a name. This book offers examples about the different ways Post Partum Depression can manifest, it's not always straight forward, one size fits all symptoms. This book takes that into account and explores the different facets of this illness. It is concise and easy to get through with lots of anecdotal stories which bring her points to life. Also offering different types of helpful suggestions to help deal with some of the symptoms of Post Partum Depression. I like what seems to be her bottom line, it's not your fault and there is help. I wish I had,had this 5 years ago. Great resource!

This book should be given to all moms after birth By M.a.S.e I wish I had a copy of this book before my daughter was born so both me and my husband could read it (more like me read it and tell hubby about it). It would have helped knowing the different types of postpartum depression that you can have. I thought that if I didn't want to hurt my girl or myself then I was fine... But it is so much more complex. I was not fine. It's important to know you are not alone, there are places to get help and that you won't be judged. The hormones are having a party in your body and it is not your fault. I think my journey from despair to acceptance have given me the strength to overcome the challenges and enjoy motherhood. I wish that upon all moms. This book is short and sweet. It should be given to every mom that is discharged from the hospital after giving birth. It will help you find your sanity.
