A Remarkable Book from a Major Force in the American Theatre By Lloyd Stuart Vaughan’s story takes the reader behind the scenes in his worlds of actor, director and producer. It reads like an engrossing novel with a cast of fascinating personalities of brilliant actors and a wide array of backstage and onstage collaborators with whom he worked so brilliantly for six decades. What many a theatre person has only envisioned -- an American theatre to rival the best of European companies -- Vaughan valiantly actually realized with his participation in the founding of the still-going-strong New York Shakespeare Festival, collaborating with legendary Joseph Papp; never to be forgotten productions at the Phoenix Theatre in New York and as the founder of the Seattle Repertory Theatre, now in its fiftieth year. A must read for theatre professionals, students, lovers of that art and intelligently curious general readers who will enjoy this book by a master director and now a superb author.
