There's no place like Home By Poppytart This is a true tale written by a charming character who describes in exquisite detail a life that is led on impulse. Always looking outsidehimself for immediate gratification, Mr. Gravely embarks on numerous adventures and misadventures that ultimately leave him with a feeling of emptiness. The Trinity of a Man is the story of Mr. Gravely's path to redemption and the discovery that the answers to life's big questions are found within him, waiting to be exposed to the light with the belief and help of a loving God. Mr. Gravely's ultimate surrender to true humility and in the process becoming sober and happy with himself and simply learning to live life on life's terms are lessons we can all utilize. The Trinity of a Man leaves one with a profound awareness that the search for one's true purpose in life is to simply go inside ourselves rather than start driving down the highway.

All things are possible if we believe By wakingup2 A peek into a life, a journey with a young boy born into the dysfunctional dynamic of alcoholism and anger, which targeted his innocent existence, into a man seeking refuge in his ability to numb the pain, confusion and rejections. Ultimately, after many brushes with death and years of grabbing at instant gratification, this man experiences the realization that our lives have a higher purpose. The road to recovery is available to all, his life a living example of the ability to redeem our lives and to walk into the dark places of our own minds and allow the light and love of the Sacred to fill us with insight and courage.

By pag113002 I am so very proud of my friend Diana Rahe Taylor, who has published Combat Trauma: The Spousal Response to PTSD. This book is a must read, for anyone who is dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at any capacity. Diana's book is a companion book, co-authored by Dr. James D. Johnson (Combat Chaplain), who has published Combat Chaplain: A Thirty Year Vietnam Battle (2001), and Combat Trauma: A Personal Look at Long-Term Consequences (2010).While Chaplain Jim's books focuses on the Warriors PTSD stories (all of of whom served together in Vietnam), Diana's book focuses on the stories of those very same Warriors spouses/loved ones. Through her faith and friendship with the Warrior families, Diana was entrusted to painstaking pen their stories. I am personally grateful, that Diana has given them the much needed venue to unburden and share their painful personal stories. I encourage you to read this book, so that you will also understand and appreciate the amount of courage and strength these Warriors/Spouses have channeled in their journey to understand and cope with PTSD. Please keep in mind, these are very raw/real stories that up until now were never talked about out loud. All of the Warriors and their spouses, continue to gather each year for a Vietnam Reunion. I had the privilege of attending one of the reunions a few years back, and I am proud to say I have been able to meet many of the fine men and women who have contributed to this book. I was further humbled to be invited to share a few circle discussions with Diana and the Warrior wives, each had a story to tell about their PTSD experiences, and Diana offered to pen their stories, a feat that took her several years! This book will not only give you a personal insight into PTSD, it also reveals the personal and painful post-war aftermath the spouses were subjected to, and the learning/coping skills they had to acquire along the way to adjust to their Warriors return home.Through these stories, you will see there is such great passion and strength in the post-war "Brotherhood" family, and I am sure you will also appreciate as much as I do, their willingness to be so vulnerable, so that others may find strength and HOPE in the battle to understand/conquer PTSD.Please take a moment to buy this book at Amazon.com. All of Diana's proceeds from the book are donated to our brave and much understood and appreciated warriors.

By tbalfe If ever there was someone who understands what the spouse of a combat Veteran goes through it is Diana Rahe Taylor who is living the life herself . Along with co-author Chaplain James D. Johnson , this book is a collaboration of the thoughts, views, feelings and even events of the spouses of various Veterans and how their lives are affected by combat . Being part of this "project" wasn't easy though sometimes very therapeutic . For those of you who are experiencing tough, gut-wrenching, teeth grinding , fist clenching moments with your spouse I urge you to read Diana's book for some insight that shows you that you are not alone . It's mind boggling how Diana was able to capture so many of the same traits between these couples--right down to them saying the same exact things and feeling the same exact emotions . The first time I heard one of the wives mutter " now be aware of your surroundings, if you were in the field you'd be dead "! I just about fell off my chair because I heard those exact same words so many times from my own husband . It was then I knew I wasn't alone and now with Diana's writing we get to pay it forward . Thank-you Diana and Jim for giving us spouses a voice .

Ever since his big screen breakthrough as phobia ridden accountant Leo Bloom in "The Producers," Gene Wilder has been one of America's most beloved comic actors. For five decades, Wilder has entertained audiences in some of the funniest films ever made, including "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "Stir Crazy." Brian Scott Mednick's fascinating new biography "Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad" (BearManor Media) reveals a very serious and private side to Wilder that audiences don't get to see. The book traces Wilder's humble beginnings in 1930s Milwaukee as a shy child who learned early on that being funny got him attention.

Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad, by Brian Scott Mednick

Review "Gene Wilder is one of the great comic actors of the last half-century - and he is also a fascinating figure offscreen. Brian Scott Mednick has done a four-star job of capturing his life and times." - Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times"I ate it up.  I wanted more!" - Dick Cavett"I recommend this book highly...  Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad presents a whole new perspective on the actor, and in so doing, offers the chance to appreciate his work on a whole new level of depth." - Daniel Perez, The Jewish Voice"A balanced and lucid look at the life and career of one of the most unlikely movie stars of the modern era." - Joe Meyers, Connecticut Post"An extremely entertaining and very readable bio of the actor, one which is clearly admiring but not sycophantic." - William Schoell, Great Old Movies"A labor of love...  Mednick has recorded most everything we need to know about Wilder's life and career." - David Luhrssen, Milwaukee Shepherd Express

From the Back Cover For five decades, Gene Wilder has been making moviegoers laugh, having appeared in some of the funniest films ever made.  But in "Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad," readers will discover a very serious and private side to him that audiences don't get to see.  Following a childhood overshadowed by his mother's ill health, he endured two broken marriages; the untimely death of his third wife, comedienne Gilda Radner; and a grueling battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  Along the way there were his legendary partnerships with Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor; box-office hits like "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "Stir Crazy"; a late-in-life career as an author of fiction; and true happiness with fourth wife Karen, who trained him for his deaf role in "See No Evil, Hear No Evil."  This first ever biography of Gene Wilder - the product of years of extensive research and interviews with Wilder's colleagues - is an honest, enlightening portrait of one of America's favorite funnymen.

Knox Any author setting out to write a bio of Gene Wilder sets himself a difficult task as his subject has lead a largely private life and, unlike many other movie stars, has had few in-depth interviews of any note. With such scant source material, this effort by Brian Scott Mednick is to be praised for at the very least attempting such a herculian task as a biography of Gene Wilder. The book starts off fine with a history of Gene's family and it's evident the author has done his groundwork here and it makes for one of the most interesting chapters of the book. Gene's early forays into acting are here and again this makes for some good reading but it's when we get to his movie career that things get a bit stale. Each movie has the same formulaic style and whilst I'm all for consistancy, it may have been wiser to approach some movies from a different style for the sake of the reader. As I have said previously, there's not much out there on Gene...and I know as I've been a fan since 1974. So 90% of this I've read elsewhere. At times it seemed like a companion book to Gene's own Kiss Me Like A Stranger: My Search for Love and Artin that here was the actual chronological history to go alongside Gene's reminiscences from Gene's own book.Brian gets back on track in the last few chapters. We hear Brian's own thoughts and overview of Gene as a person; I do wish there could have been more of this throughout the book. For example, during the filming of Stir Crazy and the erratic behaviour of Richard Pryor we can draw a conclusion that this would have been both irritating and probably annoying to Gene as much as it was to the other people working on the set, despite him (Gene) 'taking it in his stride'. A little bit of editorialising would have gone a long way.One thing that I do find disappointing though is the fact that the acknowledgements/notes/filmography/index take up a whopping 54 pages which equates to a fifth of the entire book! Whilst it's the norm to have such in any biography, they are often printed in a smaller font size so that the space taken up is minimal. In summary, this is non too shabby. I applaud him for his efforts in producing something so difficult...I suspect it will be a great source for the next biographer...judge me by my character a great man once said; but in Gene's case we know more about the characters he plays and we need to have more a sense of the man.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A spot-on title for a spot-on work By J. Dolan Byrnes I've just finished reading Brian Scott Mednick's Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad, a captivating biography of one of my favorite actors. It is so aptly titled. I found myself at times laughing out loud and at other times wiping a tear. This illuminating work about one of the most private individuals in show business provides great glimpses into Wilder's personal thoughts and attributes; not easy material to mine about a man who cherishes privacy above almost all else. I was struck throughout the pages of this work by the depth of affection in which Wilder is held by so many who know him. Funny & Sad is an inspiring testament not only to the multi-faceted talents of Wilder as an actor, writer, film maker, and director, but also to his warmth and generosity as a human being. In an age of Charlie Sheens and Lindsay Lohans, it is reassuring to read of a successful celebrity who actually avoids the spotlight yet makes important contributions to society, both inside and outside of his industry.Mednick's writing flows as if he were writing a novel. It is both insightful and critical. While it's obvious that the author greatly admires his subject, he does not gloss over the more negative aspects of Wilder's life and career. If you are a Gene Wilder fan this book definitely should be on your bookshelf - but only after you've had the pleasure of savoring it's pages. I hope we'll hear more from this talented writer.

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. High Praise for Mednick's Wilder Biography By D. McNeill "Werewolf?""There, wolf. There, castle."Brian Scott Mednick's 'Gene Wilder: Funny and Sad' is a fascinating telling of how twenty-something Jerome Silberman became Gene Wilder, one of the greatest comedic actors of our time. The chapters within reveal in glorious detail how Wilder became attached to the films he involved himself in, what his interactions with co-stars and crew were like and the man's opinions about his own work. It's especially good for the many, many interviews with those who've known and worked with him throughout his career. This is where the book lives up to the 'Funny' in its title with filmmaking anecdotes aplenty. It's also quite effective at being an amusing reminder of why we love Wilder's films so much to begin with. Mednick's book also delivers on the 'Sad', however, particularly with insightful sections on Wilder's relationship to fellow comedic great Gilda Radner, their miscarriage and the cancer that took her life. It's heartening to read how he managed to be an inspiring figure in his personal life and with public charities, even in such times of sorrow.Simply put, this is as enjoyable and informative a read about Gene Wilder as anyone could hope to get. Recommended to all.

Would you rather enjoy some pad thai, try some excellent samosas, or just kick back with a good beer? Just like the old-school choose-your-own-adventure books, your choices are up to you. --UPDATED March 2016-- Choose a Way books are interactive travel guides to cities around the world, and this is a chance to eat your way through Bangkok. Instead of being told where to go or reading through a huge guidebook just to plan a few days, choose between three places. Tap, enjoy, then choose from three more places. Use it on your phone or your tablet to travel on-the-fly, or sit down with it on your laptop and plan out your trip that way. Your call.

Just one of over a thousand ways your day of eating through Bangkok can play:

  • 9am: Head to a low-key, nameless street stall for some of the best samosas in your life
  • Noon: Head to a great place to try khao mok gai (Thai-style chicken biryani)
  • 2:30pm: Look for a three-meter grill at this satay stall in Tha Din Daeng for meat skewers
  • 5:00pm: Seconds from Khaosan Road is a place to try gaeng som sour curry with a whole snakehead fish
  • 8:00pm: Go to a bar where the local university students really drink

A quick note

If you're looking for places with Michelin stars or extensive wine collections, this is not the book for you. Chris has wisely focused on the best food in this guide, not necessarily the best restaurants. This is an important distinguishment - Bangkok has plenty of high-class restaurants, but they're not where the locals go for the best food. Few of the places mentioned here would be called pricey, but you'll be enjoying real food, often cooked fresh in front of you, and again frequented by plenty of locals.

Insider knowledge from a local

Each Choose a Way book is written by someone who's lived in the city for a long time. You're getting a local's point of view, not what travel writers think tourists want to hear. You'll discover the highlights of the city, along with the offbeat, hidden treasures they recommend along the way.

About the author

Cavanagh The book cleverly puts together suggested itineraries and places to eat and drink in Bangkok depending on the time of day. It’s a simple, but effective idea for a food book and one which works very well especially when combined with maps and easy-to-follow directions to get to each of the places listed. Rather than read the book all in one go, readers are encouraged to dip in and out depending on the time of day or what food you are in the mood for. The author has an intimate knowledge of Bangkok's food scene and his love for Thai food shines through in every page of the book. I’m sure the book took plenty of time and research to put together, but I also get the impression this was a labour of love for Chris Wotton. The reader is left in little doubt that each of the suggested venues and dishes have all been lovingly researched in person by the author.I’m fortunate to be able to send much of the year in Thailand and regularly visit Bangkok, but there are plenty of food stalls and venues listed that I didn’t know about or am yet to visit. The book should appeal to a wide range of people and not just serious foodies. Definitely worth checking out whether you are on your first trip to Bangkok or are a regular visitor to the Thai capital. Highly recommended.

An Alternate to Needles, Drugs, and Surgery Most of us think of medicine as needles, drugs, and surgery. Those three things are all we need. We need to become addicted to drugs, we need to have marks on our skin from needles and scars from the surgery that is performed to take care of the problems we have. This is called allopathic medicine. It’s standard medicine. That’s what’s practiced in America, unlike Europe, Russia, or Canada, where they are a bit more progressive. This book is about the field of electromedicine. Modern electromedicine was invented in 1979 in America and sold worldwide. It started at Medtronic, the way it’s practiced today in America. At Medtronic, in 1979, the author and others invented, designed, and put out to the world the first TENS unit. It was a small electrical device the size of a packet of cigarettes with wires and electrodes which, when attached to the body in an area of pain, stopped the pain signal. Medtronic sold 56 million of them from 1981- 1984. Other companies since then have sold millions more, yet the author still keeps getting asked the question, Why is this so new and why haven’t I heard of it before? It’s because it’s suppressed. There’s a better way to do things than needles, drugs, pills, pharmaceuticals, and surgery. The old/new field of electromedicine kind of goes like this: It is a field of medicine wherein equipment is designed which interacts with the body electronically. The human body is an electro-chemical system. It operates on an electric circuit. The body is an electric circuit. These circuits, the nodes of these circuits, are cells. The body is full of billions of cells. Each cell is an electrical piece. It has a positive and a negative charge. They’re called ions and they circle the cell. They’re in the aqueous fluid around the cell and they’re positively charged, negatively charged, neutrally charged, depending on the function of the cell. This book explains the fundamentals of electromedicine and how it works. Other books by this author go into much more detail, and are given as references for those who need more detail.

From Publishers Weekly Although the essays in this anthology of travel pieces are by an unusual mix of veteran travel writers and beginners, common threads run throughout: travel is surprising; it often tries your patience; and it teaches life lessons. Selected from entries in a competition on the Lonely Planet Web site, these tales of global journeys are almost uniformly funny. In "Blackout in Ushuaia," novelist and editor Michelle Richmond takes advantage of the lights going out on vacation at a South American ski resort with her husband by seizing the moment for a little lovemaking. Getting locked inside a Dutch men's room has travel writer Doug Lansky feeling like he's doing time in a solitary jail cell. In "The Afghan Tourist Office," first-time writer Alexander Ludwick tries to extend his visa with a nutty singing and dancing official who does a manic jog before applying his rubber stamp to the author's documents. Although a few stories in this book are too short to elicit a belly laugh, others will provide a riotous howl and a yen to wander. (Sept.) From Booklist With the proviso that readers should approach anything labeled "humor" with a 10-foot-long barge pole, this collection of "humorous tales" is a genial enough gathering of "misadventures" from some of travel writing's bigger names. And so Jan Morris shares the instant karma delivered upon her for not traveling first class, as she quotes the British navy as traditionally doing. Simon Winchester describes "the most perfect hotel in the world" (London's Connaught) and the singularly remarkable event that once happened there. And the collection's venerable editor, George (he's now Lonely Planet's "global travel editor"), offers up his experience of grandly and unknowingly ordering an entire octopus in a Neapolitan restaurant. By design a lightweight book, this collection of 32 short pieces will provoke sympathetic nods, if not a steady flow of laughter, from its readers. For the larger travel collection. Almost every story leaves you wanting to read more by that author. Many stories leave you thinking. The collection is a perfect companion on a solo trip, because the stories are short but interesting. When I finished the book, I didn't want to leave it in a hotel room. But I can think of several people who would enjoy it, so I guess I will end up buying more copies. Which I will be happy to do. (Not a big deal, but ... I wish the short bios were at the end of the stories and not at the beginning. I don't care about the author until I read the story. Many bios had a little twist that did not make sense until you read the story.)

We meet people for whom our presence is nothing but opportunity, to take them out of the sadness and difficulty of their lives. The smiles exchanged on both sides have something of a nervous edge." ‒ Pico Iyer, in BY THE SEAT OF MY PANTSI always approach a literary anthology with some trepidation; I expect the stories to fall on the bell curve of Gaussian distribution and it's the several at the low end that often have me wishing I hadn't cracked the book at all. But the curve represented by the thirty-one chapters in BY THE SEAT OF MY PANTS, subtitled "Humorous Tales of Travel and Misadventure," is skewed sharply to the right. It's all pretty much good stuff. Indeed, while I give one tale three stars, the rest get four or five.Ok, ok. I've been robbed blind by a pair of Gipsy pickpockets on Rome's Ponte Sant'Angelo, locked myself INSIDE my car in Portsmouth, England, and, while as a clueless foreigner struggling with the language barrier at Bucharest's Bãneasa Airport during the height of the Cold War, was stopped from boarding the wrong plane even as I had my foot on the bottom step of the air-stairs. But I haven't a story to match any of those here.Escaping the drudgery of life at home to travel outside the comfort zone is an invitation to be taken unawares and delighted, enraged, surprised, scammed, annoyed, physically sickened, confused or enraptured. But, it beats staying home doing the laundry. Among other things, the aggregate thirty-one wayfaring contributors to BY THE SEAT OF MY PANTS are sorely embarrassed ("Blackout in Ushuaia", "Dutch Toilet", "Walk of Fame"), unexpectedly delighted ("Carpet-Rolling", "The Garden Kitchen"), befooled ("Let the Buyer Beware", "An Award Winning Performance"), confounded ("The Afghan Tourist Office", "Left Luggage"), amazed ("A Matter of Trust") and otherwise educated for the better ("Journey to the Centre of the Earth", "Naked in Oaxaca"). And, indeed, in "Wangara's Cross" I came across perhaps the most poetic explanation of the sun's traverse of the sky from sunrise to sunset that I've ever read. This is the perfect book for anyone with Wanderlust. And, hey, I'm in!Then there was the time I took the slow train from Timisoara to Bucharest accompanied by drunken Romanian Land Forces troops.

I read six to try and find something interesting, to no avail. I've traveled quite a bit and I expected some exotic adventures and humor, but I was disappointed. I expect more from Lonely Planet.

"The plan of a building," he once said, "should be read like a harmony of spaces created in light." Here, in this essay by the legendary art critic Robert Hughes, is Kahn's story.

Like Kahn's buildings, Hughes distills the great architect's legacy down to its barest essentials giving us an enduring portrait of a man whose genius is still being reckoned today.

Nearly eighty years ago when a heavy radio fell on the head of Dolores Ann Theresa Veronica Duffy, her panicked mother ran with her to a Philadelphia hospital. The doctors treated her but told her mother the injury was severe, and to watch for strange behavior in the future. Those doctors were right about the strange behavior, but they could never have predicted her amazing life. Channeling Cornelius is the memoir of a spunky octogenarian and a coming of age story on the edge of the greatest generation. It's a walk back in time through growing up on the front stoops of tight-knit ethnic neighborhoods in the City of Brotherly Love when friends and family gathered in the evening to "chase the duck"; when everybody took care of their neighbors and when a beat cop could become the mayor of one of the largest cities in the United States. It tells the fascinating and little known story of the relationship between one of the great legends of Philadelphia baseball and the legendary man who owned Broadway, who her family swears to this day is a close relative. It is a crazy tale filled with her conversations with an imaginary friend who wore a feather in his hat; relatives that included horse thieves, bootleggers, grave robbers, card sharks and a husband she adored who worked for decades at an evening newspaper that nearly everybody in Philadelphia once read. From celebrating in Times Square at the end of World War II to a boardwalk in New Jersey listening to a new band called Bill Haley and the Comets, and from witnessing the Hindenburg airship disaster to being mistaken for the kidnapped Lindbergh baby, the life of Dolores McDowell was anything but dull. But most of all, Channeling Cornelius is a charming love story, and an inspirational tale of an extraordinary woman who never graduated from high school but became an entrepreneur who founded and operated several businesses, while raising four children who somehow turned out normal. Crazy because a radio fell on he

"Houdini the Magician Stumped," proclaimed the Boston Herald in 1924. Who was this medium who baffled Houdini? None other than Margery Crandon, the wife of a prominent Boston surgeon. "Margery the Medium" made headlines throughout the 1920s. She captivated not only Harvard professors, but the editors of Scientific American with her amazing physical mediumship. Margery was very much a woman of her time- the Roaring Twenties. By the time the Twenties were in full swing, Margery and her second husband Dr. Le Roi Crandon became interested in psychic phenomena. In May of 1923, Dr. Crandon invited two couples to join them in a table-tilting séance. During the evening, he discovered that his wife had a genuine gift for communicating with the spirits. Within months, Margery produced psychic music, direct voice, trumpet séance, and even apports. She not only fascinated her husband, but the scientific community in the United States and England. While Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle championed Margery's mediumship, Harry Houdini denounced her as a fraud. Was Margery Crandon too good to be true or was she the last of the great physical mediums?

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. like everyone else By Damian I found this book to be very interesting in that it gets "inside" the Crandon household and discusses events from their point of view. As an individual who is a Houdini historian, I am well aware of this case and it's implications. However, this book is LOADED with typographical errors which are somewhat distracting and the author, a spiritualist, believes that Margery was the "real deal". As the story unfolds, the reader is aware of how preposterous some of these "manifestations" were and the gullibility of some very educated people. Fundamental questions regarding life and death are explored and this writer admits that he, like everyone else, would like some concrete proof, not magic effects played out in a darkened Victorian room. The story is always fascinating because those fundamental question still remain to be answered.

MY STORY IS NOW MY TESTIMONY...The life I lived before was adventurous, lavish, and fun, but wearisome too. I had many experiences, trials, and tribulations. I thank God daily for keeping me and not allowing me to give up. Looking back on my past gives me hope for my present and my future, because I saw that because He didn't fail me in the past, He surely won't fail me today or tomorrow. The mess of my past is now a message; those tests of my past are now my testimony. My life has always been an open book, just not an actual book until now. I decided to tell my story so that others might be able to relate to my experiences and learn from them. I am no longer a victim, but a survivor; and as such I hope to save others by sharing my life's lessons -- My Testimony.

An amazing read that gives you hope By Kelsi Spencer Although I finished this read in under an hour, it was fulfilling and consisted of lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The author is beyond open in this book which allows you to relate to her with ease. I truly recommend purchasing this book because we all have faced times in life where we have hit rock bottom and lost our faith and the author lets you know that you're not alone in that. Well worded and very personable, I hope she writes more!

Not only was I touched by this book, I was in the midst of most of it. To see this author go through the things in this book and is able to share it with the world, is a blessing by itself. I pray that whoever reads this book, they will re-evaluate their own lives. There are so many young women who may be in the same situations or very similar and do not know what to do or have no one to turn to, but this book will give you an insight on what is important: Having that personal relationship with God. Great book and I recommend everyone to take the time to just sit and read it. Her tests are now her testimony!

She was from a large town in Iowa and became the darling of Paris. She alternated between small European films and big Hollywood movies, on the way helping Jean-Luc Godard to shape contemporary cinema. She moved between the worlds of show business and politics, from private and state dinners with leaders to clandestine activities supporting groups and individuals on both sides of the Atlantic. She was a unique person ahead of her time. Breathless tells the story of the woman who, after a disastrous film debut in Saint Joan, became both acclaimed international actress (Lilith, Dead of Summer) and popular star (Paint Your Wagon, Airport). It also tells of the FBI's campaign to "neutralize" Seberg, and the still unsolved mystery of her death in 1979 at the age of 40. Featuring exclusive interviews with family, friends and acquaintances, Jean Seberg - Breathless includes personal letters and obscure quotes from the subject, and more than sixty rare photographs. Iowa-born Garry McGee is a documentary filmmaker and author. Jean Seberg - Breathless is his fourth book. His book with Jean Russell Larson, Neutralized: the FBI versus Jean Seberg, is also published by BearManor Media.

"Played Out" has an unfortunate title, but in all other respects, it is the superior biography. Published in 1981, just two years after Seberg's suicide, it contains virtually all the information included in "Jean Seberg: Breathless" except for some incidental but charming additions such as Jean's correspondences with her maternal grandmother ("Granny Grunt").Garry McGhee's "Jean Seberg: Breathless" obviously draws quite heavily from the earlier biography, but it sanitizes Jean's life. Jean's disintegration after the end of her marriage to Romain Gary is quite painful to read about, but in order to get a complete understanding of her life, you must be exposed to the facts of her downward spiral. It was almost as if Jean Seberg had two different personae. Dubbed "the most unlikely of movie stars" by one observer, Jean early in her career was a remarkably buoyant, photogenic and fresh personality. French director Francois Truffaut was captivated by Seberg's performance in "Bonjour Tristesse" (1958). Then came her star turn in Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless", which cemented a place for her in film history. But after that, there is only Robert Rossen's "Lilith" (1963) to watch in order to gauge Jean Seberg's impact and lost potential. Other films in which she sparkled ("Five Day Lover", "Time Out for Love", and "Dead of Summer") are mostly European efforts and are not in circulation.Jean Seberg was often compared to Jane Fonda. Roughly the same age, they both became involved in French New Wave films, and then strangely they both adopted leftist causes such as the Black Panther movement. But whereas Fonda was well-connected to Hollywood, and toughened as an actress by stage experience, Seberg was thrown into the movies by fortune, and before she was really ready for it.Seberg was the product of an Iowa childhood which granted her a naive idealism, but also withheld many experiences which would have given her confidence in herself. Though Jean had an innate intelligence, she also was extremely vulnerable and insecure throughout her life. She was plagued with toxic relationships and poor choices. At the time when Jane Fonda's career was being resurrected by "They Shoot Horses, Don't They", Seberg was struggling with her career, finding no better projects than "Airport", "Paint Your Wagon", and "Macho Callahan". She disliked both Los Angeles and New York, and she was afraid of stage work. Perhaps to get the excitement and commitment that she couldn't find in films, she became involved with the Black Panther movement. From there on, her life was marked by paranoia, dissolution and madness.Nevertheless, she is survived by the wonder of her film presence, and the feeling of "if only..." If only she had worked with such admirers as Truffaut and Polanski, or other masters like Hitchcock, who might have understood how to use her strengths. She was disarmingly natural in both her films and her interviews. One cannot watch her without believing that "here was a remarkable person".She was recently listed as "one of the twenty most beautiful women in film" by Esquire magazine. Hers is an amazing and also agonizingly tragic story.

Jean Seberg IS breathless By Kirk H Although I felt this book fell a bit short on creating a satisfying picture of Seberg's personality, it did give an excellent overview of her life and travails. She is someone who rose to fame at the time of a great turbulence in America (the 1960s), and it makes this bio historically fascinating. With the exception of Godard's "Breathless," Seberg's other excellent performances such as "Bonjour Tristesse" and "Lilith" have not been given their due. One thing this book lacks is a more contemporary view of her performances, given the perspective of time. "Saint Joan" is given short shrift historically and by comments Seberg made about her own performance. Today, her Joan of Arc comes across as a document of a young actor learning how to give a strong, emotional and intimate performance, and then by the end of the film, giving one. She learned along the way and in that regard it's a fascinating film to watch. Though I enjoyed this book very much, and would heartily recommend it to anyone at all interested in Jean Seberg, I felt it could have gone deeper into her psyche. Barry Paris' bio of Louise Brooks is the standard on which I base bios of famous actors. Few bios come close the depth of that book. There's a bit of that in McGee's Breathless, but I came away feeling a bit like the surface was skimmed rather than the depths plumbed. Nevertheless, as an overview of Seberg's films and life, this is very much worth reading.

Because her successors were, well, more successful, Jean often gets overlooked when it comes time to dole out the honors to the women who influenced the style, shape & complexion of 60's femininity. Her initial screen persona was as a kind of child-woman, pretty but not overtly sexualized. Throughout her career, her image morphed back and forth through a kind of Tippi Hedren look to the boyish, close-cropped style she had in "Breathless", the film for which she is most known, and which showcased her unique appeal most effectively.Shirley Maclaine, Mia Farrow and Audrey Hepburn were in a similar vein with their child-women personas. These actresses all were forging a new kind of feminine identity, with a naturalness that hadn't been seen on the screen before. Of them all, I find Seberg the most interesting screen presence, if not necessarily the best actress. Is it only because she came to a tragic end that she is more compelling and enigmatic on the screen?Certainly her performances in "Breathless", "Lillith" and even "Bon Jour Tristesse" are little marvels. Acting-wise, she reminds me of Louise Brooks, in as much as her acting doesn't announce itself boldly. It's humble, poetic, watercolory. She is not so in love with her technique that her subtle effects are marred by the bold, show-offy strokes of her "method". She is always beautiful, but in her best work, she is magical too.Garry McGee has done a commendable job researching and writing Jean's story. At 311 pages, it is satisfyingly dense, and much more than a perfunctory synopsis of her life and infamous death from suicide in 1979. In fact, it's so good you find yourself wishing a bigger publisher had picked it up so the illustrations could be top notch and the format larger. But the content more than compensates for any graphic deficits. In fact, this book is really the quintessential tome on Seberg now, every bit as good as its predecessor on the subject, "Played Out- The Jean Seberg Story" by David Richard. If you're interested in Seberg, bet both. This one makes an excellent companion piece as it contains additional insights and illuminations, including rare interviews with Jean's sister Mary Ann, unique to this book!. "Breathless" balances sensitivity with investigative journalism and the result is sure to please both scholars AND fans of the still-resonant star.

A Fun and Fast Read with Interesting Connections Between the Personal Life and History By JAF Using the frame of a fast-paced poker tournament in Deauville, Arthur Goodhart embarks on a journey of the mind as he explores personal history, European history, diplomatic history, literature, art, sport and current events. The magic is that narrator's voice is clever, witty and self-effacing. As a result, the writing is breezy, and the novel moves quickly as the author finds some surprising connections between the personal and the public, the current and the historical. The twenty-first century poker player analyzes twentieth century Europe as it careens to a disaster (WWI) while at the same time recognizing that variations of the same errors, misunderstandings, and missteps continue to plague those who make national and international decisions today (such as global warming). Invoking Samuel Becket for the novel's coda, the author explores the intellectual and emotional stress of repeated failures and the biological imperative of perseverance, forces which dominate the life of the poker player, the politician and everyone else. The failures, missteps and misunderstandings are not limited to the great men or women of history but experienced by everyone. Yet, although serious in theme and intended to make the reader think about connections between the personal and the public, the novel is charming and often funny (at times, laugh out loud funny) and can be easily finished in one or two sittings. It is a good read for the beach or a summer holiday, and it is sure to spark interesting conversations among friends.

Wonderful short book about success and failure, World War 1, literature... and poker By Richard Roberts This is a great short book about success and failure, full of interesting literary and historical anecdotes. It includes some fascinating reflections on the origins of the First World War. And, as you may have guessed from the cover, a thrilling, fast-paced poker tournament is also at the heart of the book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in 20th century European history, literature or poker. And if, like me, you like all three then this book is definitely for you!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Upping the Ante By Randy Stark The author participated in a major, big stakes poker tournament held in Deauville, France (at the casino, he points out, which was the model for Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale). The book, a Kindle Single, is a long essay about playing in the tournament---hands, strategies, luck, muck--- as well as ruminations about other matters, both connected to the tournament, such as the architecture of the casino and the hotel and their coastline location, the beach, the restaurants, as well as topics related only tangentially. He calls the piece a “personal diary that interweaves poker and politics, saints and sinners, connections and coincidences, writers and fighters…”Judging by his writing, Mr. Goodhart is a thoughtful, widely read, person if not a particularly gregarious one. There are terse mentions of cell phone calls to his family in London, and he does reveal that in his other life he is a literary agent, but that’s all the autobiography we’re going to get. By way of example, he describes a moment during the tournament, during a break following a particularly intense series of hands and an especially significant loss by the player sitting next to him: “My neighbour seems unconcerned by this setback. He engages two newcomers in conversation, discovers the bearded young man stacking an impressive pile of chips is from Finland while the tanned, more portly middle-aged man is from Montpellier. I increase the volume on my iPod.” So much for small talk from Mr. Goodhart. When it comes to poker, and the tournament, he has somehow kept meticulous track of the details of play, almost like an anthropologist in the era of thick description. The book is loaded with familiar poker lingo---river, button, blind, flop, all-in---and Mr. Goodhart draws concise and unembellished portraits of the tournament players and staff. Remembering every play and ante, every reason for doing what he did and an analysis of what he didn’t do, and at the same time chronicling the play of the others makes for engaging verisimilitude.Equally astonishing is the lack of hyperbole and the erudition in the non-poker digressions. Instead of hyped up tales of drugs and booze and sexual obsession, Mr. Goodhart thoughtfully opines on the Davos world leaders’ conference being held at the same time as the tournament, and has much to say about World War I, using Erich Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front as one text, The Sleepwalkers by Christopher Clark as another. Other names that come up include Ford Madox Ford, Joan of Arc, Jack Kerouac, Saint Therese of Liseiux, Roger Federer. He manages to make the connections, and sometimes uses a poker metaphor to decorate a thought, but he is quick to point out where the relations and the connections unravel. The reporting on the tournament is almost a cover for his cultural commentary and digressions, but there is little hyperbole and in all areas he is respectful of his material.Easily readable in a couple of hours, Five Days in Deauville is like a good conversation with someone who thinks.
