"Someday we'll see the world together," is the dream of a lifetime for many couples. But what if you and your sweetheart actually took the plunge? Backpacking around the world meant being together virtually every minute for seven months in the heat and dust of foreign cities, tropical jungles and the ramshackle trains and buses of 13 countries for authors Robert Downes and Jeannette Wildman. Their adventure is told through the pages of "Travels With My Wife," which offers tips on how readers can also travel on a budget for months on end. Downes and Wildman started their trip in Australia, camping for two-and-a-half months across the continent from the island of Tasmania, along the east coast, and then to the Top End of aborigine country. "Anyone who's interested in visiting Australia and traveling the classic Sydney-to-Cairns route will get the lowdown on this beautiful country in our book," Downes says. "Camping is definitely the best way to visit 'Down Under'." From Australia, they traveled on to Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Turkey, Croatia and Italy. Downes, who has backpacked through more than 70 countries and turned 59 on the trip, notes that increasingly, many backpackers are older travelers, ages 40-70. "Backpacking around to hostels isn't just for college kids anymore," he notes. "Older travelers have the time and money to take off on continent-wide trips. There are tens of thousands of us out there, pursuing low-cost travel options in exotic locales, such as Latin America and Southeast Asia."

I believe there s a nomadic impulse within the human race, but some have it more than others, says Downes. When I was 17, I hitchhiked from Detroit to California. I ve always had wanderlust my whole life. Today, Downes, formerly of Royal Oak and Lake Orion, and his wife, Jeannette Wildman, have wanderlusted to almost every corner of the planet. Backpacking around the world meant being together seven months, virtually every minute, Downes says, except for when going to the bathroom, he adds with a laugh. Seven Months is about their 2011-12 trip through 14 countries and city states, from Singapore to Dubai. It s also the subject of their recent book. They trudged through city heat and dust, explored tropical jungles and traveled on ramshackle trains and buses in exotic countries. Their adventures included hiking for six days through the mountains of Tasmania, bicycling through Tuscany and the Croatian islands, traveling through the recent war zone of Sri Lanka, and winging it through several Islamic countries. Their trip and book came after Wildman retired from running a home day-care business. Downes was co-founder of Northern Express, a weekly publication based in the Traverse City area that he sold about two years ago. They have two children and six grandchildren. It s not unusual to see folks hiking in their 60s, slinging backpacks like they did in college days, Downes says. They have the time and financial stability to travel, he notes, adding many Americans are retiring in foreign places, including beautiful Ecuador, which is bursting with travel options. They discuss everything from packing tips ( wash-and-wear outfits and lightweight ballet-style shoes, sandals and hiking boots are a must, Wildman says) to banishing the fear factor. When I walk through a market in a foreign land it s like going through the Traverse City market, Downes says. You have to be comfortable being close to other cultures. You are riding on buses and sleeping on trains with locals, and staying where they stay. Most Americans are afraid of that kind of travel. Adds Wildman: The world s really not that dangerous. Physically preparation is a must. Jeannette walks six miles daily and also practices yoga and Pilates, while Bob is an avid cyclist and has been a lifelong participant in triathlons and iron man competitions. The couple met in 1991 and have traveled together ever since. Their first big trip together was to British Columbia and Acapulco. Most recently, they spent five weeks in Europe that included an invigorating hike in the Alps. These days, they winter in Central America. Bob says he s met wealthy folks on backpacking trips who can travel in style, but prefer this type of hands-on (or, feet-down) adventure. I think (backpack travel) takes you out of your comfort zone, but in a very good way, says Downes, whose favorite country is India. India is like going to another planet. It s an unusual culture, interesting, beautiful sites, people wearing flowers, garments, craziness ... you re really outside your comfort zone in India. And that s an understatement, Wildman adds with a chuckle. Once in India we were seated in a restaurant and in walked a cow no one pays attention to that. Then there s Dubai, which they agree is the polar opposite of India. It s super clean and modern, with wide streets, Wildman recalls. As for their book, readers will sense that travel could be the ticket to a long-lasting, solid marriage. --The Oakland Press

From the Author I love to travel, but always on a budget.  I'm a person of ordinary means: not rich, not poor, just in-between, possibly like you.  To indulge my traveling bone, I've chosen the backpacking route, traveling for some 40-plus years with a pack on my back, using local transportation or bicycling and staying in guest houses and hostels in more than 70 countries around the world. The result has been a very satisfying and rewarding adventure, which increasingly, is the preference of budget-minded travelers of all ages.  I can show you the ropes and offer a few laughs to boot.  I guarantee that the travel tips in my books will save you hundreds of dollars, allow you to travel safely, and provide plenty of thrilling destinations to put on your own bucket list.

From the Back Cover "I don't freak out because I let you freak out for me," Jeannette says as our boat creeps toward a darkened shore near midnight on the far side of the world.  We're traveling between the islands of Indonesia on a rusting ferry to an unknown port and I'm ripped with anxiety.  Where will we stay tonight and what will we find when we land?  Foreign ports have the allure of mystery and romance, but are also the lair of hustlers and pirates...  But that's the deal we made when we set out to backpack around the world for seven months.

You can't help but be struck by the author's honesty and compassion as they experience the good and not-so-good of each country. I came away with the conclusion that even I could travel to such places, but it can enrich the experience to do it with someone you love. I highly recommend Travels With My Wife.

Like "Travels With Charley", to be read repeatedly By Isiah Smith, Jr As evident from his many books on travel, Robert Downes is at his happiest and most content when he is on the move. Whether it is backpacking around the world, or rough riding on bicycle trips beyond the reach of the faint of heart, "Bob" is constantly in motion, always seeking, forever searching. In his most recent book "Travels With My Wife", Bob gives a vivid, funny and wildly entertaining account of he and his wife's adventure travelling around the world for seven months. Bob has a singular talent for creating word pictures that forces the reader to identify passionately with the couple's adventures. Like John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley", this is a book to be savored, read slowly, then read again. Between the covers of this book, Bob's love for his twin passions, Jeannette, his wife, and the art of travel and movement, shines brightly. I couldn't recommend it more.Isiah Smith, Jr.

This Book Takes You There By Allan Nahajewski There are many reasons to read “Travels With My Wife.” If you like to travel internationally, it’s loaded with ideas for future destinations. More than that, it’s a reminder that there are many ways to see the world. You can choose comfort and security, or you can go the route less traveled and see the slices of life not included in most tour packages. That’s the path Bob and Jeannette chose. The book is a well-written account that doesn’t hold back on the gritty side of budget travel. If you’ve wondered what it would be like to spend seven months on the road, this book takes you there. It’s objective, informative, more realistic than romantic, with some thoughtful travel tips included. Whether you’re inspired to do as they did or to carve out your own travel style, it definitely will get you thinking: “Where should we go next?” A must-read for travelers.
