During a bombing raid over North Vietnam, Kenneth R. Hughey takes flak in his F-4 Phantom. With both their aircraft’s engines burning, Hughey and fellow crewman Mel Pollack eject at 22,000 feet and 620 miles an hour.
The Vietcong capture Hughey as soon as he reaches ground, beginning what would become over five-and-a-half years of confinement in a North Vietnamese Communist prison system.
In prison, Hughey undergoes brutal interrogation, providing his questioners with a series of lies to avoid divulging accurate information. Requests to write home are denied for three long years, during which his wife has no idea of his fate.
Hughey describes his journey from rural upbringing to his combat missions, from the rigors and deprivations of imprisonment to his eventual release. His is a story of endurance—and an imprisonment made bearable by his respect for lifelong role models and personal heroes, beginning with his own family.
A fast-paced, inspirational memoir, Outlaw Lead takes readers from the excitement and complications of air force missions to the isolation and uncertainty of Communist prison. Hughey’s story is a reminder of the resiliency of the human spirit.

In that respect, it was painful to read, because except for the grace of God go I!! Ken has taken considerable effort to define terms in fighter operations and geographic locations for those who were not in the air war of Viet Nam.Ken brings out a point very well that the US military needs to address. With the means of torture that our enemies will use, it should be a requirement to resist "only so far as we are as an individual" to resist. Our government recently stopped some techniques to extract information from the terrorists because they were too strong, too inhuman; however, they were effective. Yet we demand that our military members when subject to these types of torture, to resist, at all costs in pain and permanent physical damage. Ken carried a burden of the feeling that the US Govenment would Courts Martial him because, after considerable torture, he told them the base he flew out of.It is ironical because when they heard his 'call sign' over the radios of the others in his flight, 'Outlaw', the North Viet Nam intelligence knew where he was based!Ken is a modest hero in my view.People should read this book and ponder its message!

Wales The author flew more air missions than any other pilot in Vietnam, over 500 missions, and was awarded 2 Sliver Stars, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, Purple Hearts, and other medals, and spent 6 years in the Hanoi Hilton as a POW after being brought down on a mission over North Viet Nam. When he writes of his experiences it grips your attention and you cannot put this book down. This is truly the voice of an American hero and it deserves to be heard. This book should be read and shared with your friends and relatives. Where do they find men such as these who fly in harms way again and again?

By johnna n. stone This is much more than one might expect, it is not just about an American Hero and his experiences as a POW. It is a riveting and intriguing book about the individuals that Hughey has met throughout his life, beginning in rural Tennessee. The descriptions as written by Hughey bring the very real individuals to life. And this book is not just a guy thing, women will also love it.
