In this funny, touching, and poignant memoir, David J. Malebranche celebrates the lessons he learned from his father, a Haitian physician who immigrated to the United States in the 1960s.
Malebranche provides a counter narrative to the current focus on absentee fathers in Black communities across the country, chronicling the ways his relationship with his father morphed, evolved, and ultimately grew stronger throughout his life.
As a young child, Malebranche believed his father to be omnipotent, a larger-than-life superhero. It wasn’t until he became a teenager and experienced the usual adolescent angst about parents that he realized significant culture differences and divergent belief systems could profoundly exacerbate the tensions in his relationship with his father and cause their views of each other to change drastically.
Despite the wide gap between their worldviews and lived experiences, both Malebranche and his father remained committed to finding a way to accept and respect one another. Today, Malebranche can look at his father—and at the enduring lessons about life he received from him—and say that he once more sees his father as a true hero.

Malebranche I had reservations about reading this book. I am biased. After all I am the Haitian father portrayed, a loving, flawed, hard working surgeon who would not exchange lives with any husband, father, grandfather in the world. "Standing on his shoulders" is a touching, panoramic view of a typical complex American family whose members care deeply for each other. Reading it I laughed, cried, reminisced. It's a complex. savory slice of human lives. It's a must read, a book for the ages.By the way Son you were the one who introduced me to the intricacies of Doctor Mario's world 30 years ago. You gave me your Nintendo and taught me the tricks of that addicting game. Remember ? And you were right about the Chicago's explosion. Your Mom and I didn't want to give you that 900 dollars not because we were cheap. We wanted to keep our baby boy home."Standing on his shoulders" is a tale of paternal and filial unconditional love and acceptance. It's a song to the communality of our human race and it's feelings. Humans are loving and wonderful. They are also aggravating, flawed and at times mean and hateful. But after all is said and done we are that one and unique human race.By the way present and future readers of "Standing on his shoulders" stay tuned. My lovely daughter Michelle is thinking about writing a book about her mother Donna, my companion of 50 years. She has a title in mind already :" Standing on her bra straps ". Go for it Michelle. As for the grand children Skylar and Addison it's too early to tell if they plan to follow in the literary footsteps of their uncle and mother.I have one request for the author of "Standing on his shoulders". I want Denzel to play me in the lead role. Your mother has already settled on Meryl. Well written book our son.

A Great Read for Any Parent and Child Navigating Their Relationshop By Daryl L Goodwin Insightful and candid, David Malebranche takes us on a personal journey while reflecting on his complex yet loving relationship with his father. A decorated surgeon Roger Joseph Malebranche was brought up to aspire to greatness and instilled the same thought into his children. Oft times via unconventional or tough parenting the book begs the fundamental question, does the end justify the means?David gets personal and talks about his struggles and great achievements growing up under a patriarch sometimes struggling to balance his career expectations with that of being a good father. Poignant and moving, the book shows us that both are attainable and David's dads upbringing, background along with that of his mom are key ingredients in his formation into the man he is today. It's truly an homage to his dad and how they've learned to love and have mutual respect for each other's journeys. A great read that paints vivid pictures of David's life in upstate New York, the travels he has taken as part of his medical career and the influence his dad on such.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. sad, funny By William Brazell I found this book gripping, moving, sad, funny, happy, and wise. (Full disclosure: I'm biased, because I know the author and his wonderful family, and I have the great honor of being mentioned favorably in these pages.) Dr. Roger Malebranche is indeed as great a man as his son portrays, and his mother Donna is as great a woman. The only downside I can see from this book is the number of parents who will read it and ask their children, "Why do you not write such a book about me?" It's a lovely, thoughtful book about fathers and sons, sons and mothers, friends and mentors, and the surprising strengths some people show in the face of a world that does not always deserve the good people it gets.
