I have read several books from Mike Riley and they are always good and entertaining. I especially like this one as it adds a new twist to unsolved murders by adding crime scene investigation modern techniques to solve murders commiteed years and even several decades before and finally bring justice to the families of the victims and punish the murderers. Mike Riley's books are very detailed and I like the fact that all cases have a similar structure making it so much easier to follow with detailed information for each case about the victim, the location, the suspect, date of crime, conviction or identification, the backstory, the investigation and the current status. I really enjoyed reading about how forensic science has evolved in the last 50 years to give a the police some much needed help to solve cold cases. It fascinates me to see how they proceed to go over an old cold case and shed new light on who did committed the murder and how they proved it. I especially liked the case of Lucille Johnson, an elderly lady murdered over 30 years before the murderer was finally identified thanks to DNA left by the murdere's young son who played with legos blocks in the living room while his father was committing murder in the next room! Despicable crimes are finally getting solved and murders convicted for crimes they should have paid for for such a long time. I can just imagine how CSI and modern forensics changed the way polive investigates murders and can now solve any cases even cold icy cases like the one in this book.Overall, the book is well written, flows very well and the cases are fascinating. If you like cold cases, you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

By Anne I’ve been a fan of Mike Riley since I read “More Hollywood Murders and Scandals” last year, so it goes without saying that I was really excited to get into “Cold Cases Solved”…… And I was not disappointed! This book provides a gripping mix of cold, hard facts, along with the back stories which really take you back in time to the spine-chilling crime in question. I was captured from the very first story and read each case with a mix of fascination and trepidation. In fact, I literally couldn’t put it down – my husband found me on the sofa reading well into the early hours! One of the aspects which made this book stand out for me was the sheer length of the cases – some of them were only solved a couple of years ago! I mean, the story of the two teenage girls who vanished for 40 years was mind-boggling to say the least. If you have a taste for crime, I definitely recommend Mike Riley’s latest book.

No needless fluff, no boring anthropological lessons! Just everything we love!

We don`t stuff our travel content with working hours, credit-cards accepted, nearby transportation and user-reviews as it tends to bulk up the writing and are subject to change since the time of publishing. Once you decide the places you want to visit, these infos can easily be found at your hotel concierge, on-line or on Google Maps.

No user-review based content!

Similarly, our philosophy has been that user-reviewed travel sites are subjective, as they tend to top-rank places that manage their reputation on those sites. So little corner bakeries, unique shops by local artisans, secluded beaches and hidden bars don't show up in those sites as visibly as places that have an on-line marketer or social media specialist. Similarly, we believe the opinion of one well-informed local expert should outweigh the opinion of hundreds of first-time visitors to Queens. First-time visitors tend to flock to famous tourist attractions, creating a vicious circle, accentuating just the popular places. Our local experts know the entire city, and know what deserves a visit, whether a famous attraction or a quaint corner.

'Queens Top 100 Spots' is the first travel guide to Queens you ought to read.

It quickly helps you define your short-list of places you want to visit, so you don`t have to spend hours reading hundreds of pages of dense writing. All for less than the price of a sandwich. With all the resources online, it’s hard to find a cheap guide to cheap or free activities. This book is well organized, with a collection of day trips, eateries, and free events. It is a great guide for travelers or even residents who need a new date idea.I loved how it was a quick read. I’m not bogged down with a thick book to carry around. It is incredibly visual, with tons of pictures. Each trip idea has a photo so you know where you’re going. And like I mentioned above, it was a lot faster than reading all the trip advisor reviews. Instead of pouring over different places to go, reading hundreds of reviews, they’re all compiled together in one location. However, I do wish there was a little more history discussed. More information about each location, and more historical sites to visit. But other than that this is a great book, worth reading and keeping!

Forget TripAdvisor Reviews Check This Out By Jessica Middler This "little" book is packed full of beautiful pictures which are very visual and quite unique. Not the basic photos you commonly see. The author went out of his way to hand select everything you see in this book. I have to say for a $4 book, this really was a steal. Not to mention you don’t have to walk around holding a physical book while travelling, everything you need is at a flick of your finger on your phone. Finally, I spent so much time reading TripAdvisor reviews only to find out that most of the advice people were giving was in this book. Live and learn.I do wish this book had some hotel suggestions though, maybe the author can add that into the next edition. Beside that, I recommend you check this out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a guide that i like! By Deejay Finally, a guide that I like. It has plenty of photos and is very visually appealing. At the beginning of the book, instead of a table of contents, there are internal links to different kinds of places that you may like to visit, such as restaurants, pubs, etc. The TOC is at the end of the book, but is really not needed. It was a fairly quick read, if you just want to go through this book for the sake of reading. But, it has plenty of information to be extremely useful as a travel guide.Although I did feel that the guide could have provided more information about the history of some of the places that it mentioned. But overall it is a very very thorough guide, if you're not a history buff. That is why I give it 4 stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very interesting book! By Amazon Customer For its proportion and the extent at which subjects are treated, this book can be considered as a kind of “bible” for professionals in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. Overall, it has a less strictly didactic approach than the previous one and you can find more detailed and up-to-date information. At the same time, the list of contents at the beginning of the book is very clear and allows readers to easily identify the various sections one may want to focus on. I appreciate the fact that the book is dedicated to the memory of David Bransky, who unexpectedly died during the drafting phase of this book. To conclude, this book is really excellent and I highly recommend it.

Crossing decades and several continents, David’s story reveals a deep affection for Francophone culture accompanied by humorous accounts of his frustration with his own academic limitations. Like all great travel stories, “A Life in French Words” is rich in observations of human foibles, only some of them the author's.

I found it inspirational. In a relativistic age, it is good to be reminded of the virtues and moral standards that have been a foundation for whatever is good in Western culture. Yes, one could object that the good characters are idealised and one-dimensional compared to the flawed, imperfect individuals of the real world, but at least we could aspire to be like the ideals. At another level, Wilhelm Tell gives food for thought about political structure, freedom and self-government.Recommended!

Samuel C. Chandler turned one of the loves of his life (books) into his life’s work, Librarian. Samuel Call Chandler was the City Librarian for Daly City, California for 25 years. Sam was a husband, father, teacher, and author. Sam provided a lifetime of service to his church and community. Sam loved books and storytelling and in his memoir he tells some of the most important stories of his life, including how a child who grew up in rural Idaho would one day receive a Congressional Public Service Award for Daly City and be recognized by the Daly City Council at the city’s 100th anniversary. Samuel Chandler comes from a line of men and women who moved to the United States from England and Wales in pursuit of religious freedom and a better life for themselves and their children. His ancestors crossed the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains on foot with handcarts, and in covered wagon to settle in Utah and Idaho as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sam begins by sharing stories of his ancestors and parents, describing the hardships and pleasures of pioneer life, homesteading and building new towns in Utah and Idaho. He writes about serving The Church, raising large families, plural marriage, births, deaths, and new beginnings. Born in 1919, Sam was one of 12 children. Sam's stories let us imagine what it was like to grow up during the depression in a large close-knit Mormon family. He describes the births and deaths of siblings, his parents’ efforts to support the family, his struggles in school, his love of reading, the impact of F.D.R’s New Deal, the jobs he held to help with family expenses, and the strong bonds he developed with his brothers and sisters. Sam describes the lessons learned as a child and the experiences that helped define who he became as an adult. Sam's stories move from childhood to college in Idaho, Utah, and Tennessee, culminating in Master's Degrees in English and Library Science. Sam writes about his church mission in Canada and service during WWII at an Army Air Force base in England. He also chronicles his marriage and life with Ruth Stowell and their six children, moving to California and working as the Daly City Librarian, his church service, including positions as bishop, stake executive secretary, temple ordinance worker, and patriarch. At the end of the book, Sam writes about the church mission that he and Ruth served in Argentina and about the annual Chandler family reunions started by his grandparents, and the importance of family and friends in his life; a life of Service. Sam passed away on July 29, 2012, at age 93. Surviving Sam are Ruth, his wife of 64 years and more than 52 descendants: children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Highly recomended - Every Book Counts: The Stories of My Life By Sheila Larson Every Book Counts: The Stories of My Life by Samuel Chandler was a fun, captivating read. But more than that, the sharing of how his childhood experiences and stories of his parents, siblings, children and ancestors shaped his life to help him become a man of influence who exemplified love and service to mankind, can inspire others to examine their experiences and use them as stepping stones to reach their own potential. It did that for me. I highly recommend this book.

The Way It Was draws a picture of the last half century with its craters and peaks there at your fingertips, shared and explored by caring witnesses who took sides all the way through. It was not by chance that someone called out “Mazel Tov, Palà”, as the news of Franco's demise swept through a Paris gallery opening.

Their lives touched on the vital chords of our times. The story that emerges is humane, often funny, acute and shaded with grace for they knew they were blessed. To contradict the Chinese proverb, they lived in interesting times and enjoyed every minute. The Way It Was shows the reader how.

About the Author

DOLORES PALÀ was born in New York in 1928 and was raised there along the Hudson with summers with her Canadian mother's family in Nova Scotia. She went to first Catholic then public schools in the city and briefly to NYU till a series of happy accidents took her to a job at the nascent United Nations in Lake Success in 1947 followed by a scholarship to study International Relations in Paris in 1948. A few months later she met Juan Palà, then a young Barcelona artist in Paris on a French scholarship, at a St. Valentine's Day dance in 1949.

What follows is their life for two from the early post war period through to the edge of today's as yet unnamed war of religions. The young couple were part of the Cold War scene through her job and their return to Paris from New York in the mid fifties.

Juan's work as a sculptor put them in the center of a period of artistic renewal that Paris was witness to in the latter half of the 20th century. They brought up two bilingual children, Christopher, a prominent U.S. investigative journalist and Suzy, an English professor in Paris.

The Other Americans By Jeffry Kaplow In a loving description both of growing up in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s and of life as an expatriate in Parisfrom 1950 to the present day, Dolores Pala has created a charming autobiography that provides us all manner of interestinginsights concerning the « other » Americans abroad, not the often caricatured tourists, but those who came to stay and profitfrom a cultural and political climate more congenial to them than the one that characterized the United States during so muchof the second half of the twentieth century.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A MARVEL By Joan Dupont Dolores Pala has created a marvel. This was the way it was for many of us of her generation, but only Pala has found the rich texture of the times, the humor, the humanity. She weaves her rich story into the many chapters of the political story, the artist's adventure in many countries, life lived to the hilt.

She hadn’t seen it coming. Her new Chilean husband changed his mind, or, rather, the military coup changed it. Instead of their relocating to her native California as planned, he now wanted to give his country a chance. That was over four decades ago. Raised surrounded by the lush landscape of Marin County, Suzanne Adam hadn’t expected to settle in Santiago, a city of over five million people, where she faced a series of daunting challenges: food shortages, a military dictatorship, heartbroken parents, maids and machismo. After a visit back home, she returned to Chile with a California redwood seedling in her pocket, and together they would push down their roots into that distant soil, where she discovered the truth in Wallace Stegner’s statement: “Whatever landscape a child is exposed to early on, that will be the sort of gauze through which he or she will see the world afterwards.”

A Wonderful Life in Two Countries By Riverside Reader A memoir told with love of two countries, two families, and the author's eventual appreciation of both. The author vividly describes the pain of separation from parents and her California home, her difficulty with the subtleties of a foreign language, and the struggles to truly embrace the differences she encounters as she joins a large, warm family and raises two boys in a county unlike her own. People who have left the US to live in a foreign county or have been raised by immigrant parents or grandparents will especially appreciate the insight Suzanne's story provides. The book is well written, the memories honestly described and the journey with the author an enjoyable one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it only enhanced the weave of Suzanne's beautiful writing. It was the details By Lucy Quinby Having our lives (Suzanne's and mine) intertwined for always, I could not wait to dive into Marrying Santiago. I could not put it down. Read it in two days. Knowing a lot of the history of Chile, a lot ofthe time period for this book, it only enhanced the weave of Suzanne's beautiful writing. It was the details, the smallest but important notices of life and living that grabbed me. I could be there. I also did not know some parts of the story which made it even richer and more special. This story beautifully tells of the tug between two cultures, two countries, two families and yet when all is said and done - ONE wonderful life full of love. I recommend it highly.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loving in Two Worlds By john rector This biography covers more than four decades of Suzanne's marriage to Santiago, her husband and to Santiago, Chile, the capital of her adopted land. She is both courageous and sensitive in revealing the evolution of her feelings about marriage, family, and politics. As a Chilean resident, her perspective is far different from an international reporter, who stops in Chile a week before flying on to Buenos Aires. She and her family live Chilean history: they cannot escape it. Suzanne shares the tension of wanting to rear her two boys to appreciate the life she knew as a child in Marin County, California. They learn English and travel to the United States, but she sees them becoming more like Santiago and less like her. They are bilingual and bicultural, but heavily weighted toward their land of birth. She shares many joys of her adopted country as well. In this thin, long land, she introduces us to the semi-arid Central Valley and cool, forested region of El Sur. A fond observer of nature, she narrates her climbing the Andes and tenderly cultivating the flora in her own backyard. Other Americans have written about their transformative Chilean experiences. Claude Bowers, the US Ambassador in Chile from 1939-1953, narrated the Depression and war years in his autobiography , Chile through Embassy Windows. Suzanne offers a more intimate view of Chile, but does not overlook politics. She experienced the violence and traumatic events of Salvador Allende's overthrow and military rule. She lived on the "ground floor" of vulnerability and uncertainty. This autobiography is the shared life of a woman who married Santiago, but never "divorced" her own country. Courageously she shares the beauty and nostalgia of belonging to two worlds.

The wild, eccentric and outrageous life of Britain’s most insubordinate admiral. Mixes courage, audacity and pomposity with spite, venom and malevolence. Three times commander-in-chief, a member of Parliament for twenty years, and a public speaker who filled halls throughout the land – Lord Charles Beresford was all of these. Yet he was also a naval captain who had so little sea experience that he scrambled to qualify for flag rank. He endured long periods of unemployment when in disgrace with the Admiralty, while his one foray into ministerial life ended in resignation. He was also the most reprimanded naval officer of his time – perhaps of all time. Few men have enjoyed such fascinating and adventure-packed lives. The first ten years of Beresford’s naval career took him to every corner of the globe. He saw it all, from gold-mining to crucifixions, from the wild tribes of Terra del Fuego to the shadowy figure of the Emperor of Japan. When not recklessly throwing himself into perilous riding and wild hunting, he could be found risking his life to rescue fellow sailors. Yet, after a shaky start, Beresford’s career changed when, at the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 his tiny HMS Condor took on the guns of one of the massive Egyptian forts. He was an overnight hero and remained so to his death. Three years later his even more spectacular adventures in the Sudan made him the hero of the failed campaign to rescue General Gordon from Khartoum. But his official life was marred by his persistent hostility to the Admiralty and government. He achieved the dubious honour of one Prime Minister (Lord Salisbury) vowing never to employ him again in a political capacity, and one First Lord of the Admiralty (Reginald McKenna) vowing never to employ him again in the Navy. So antagonistic did he become that his naval career was ignominiously ended by the curtailing of his final command. At the age of 64 all public appointments were closed to him. Never again did the Admiralty or government call on him for any purpose. He still, though, made his mark and, as an MP and then as a peer, he remained centre stage, speaking in Parliament up to a few weeks before his death and still writing letters on the day he died.

A Colourful Character By Lucy Conlon Admiral Insubordinate: The Life and Times of Lord Charles Beresford is an easy and interesting read on the life of Lord Beresford. Lord Beresford was both an MP and a naval officer and stood out in an age of other remarkable characters. He had a close relationship with the Prince of Wales which often worked in his favour and Beresford and his wife were hopeless at managing money. Beresford was always getting himself into some mischief and trouble, once attacking the government over the navy saying "if war was to be declared so many tasks would be thrown upon the Navy that it would be utterly impossible to perform those duties". Beresford was forever making enemies - and Richard Freeman has captured the drama, achievements and colour of his life.

Took me a while to get to it.It has some minor editing and proofing issues, but they are few and far between, nothing that overwhelms the story itself. As I was reading it, I had to wonder why the senior officers of the Royal Navy would have tolerated a mediocre officer like this who routinely lied to and misled them, and was insubordinate to boot. I guess the only real answer is that being a "nobleman" was all that really mattered at that time, and he was a master of self promotion and intrigue. On top of that he was independently wealthy and that may also have made a big difference at that time in history.I was struck by his apparent genuine concern for the sailors and officers that served under him, and their families. Seems somewhat out of character for an individual who really seemed to care mostly about himself.

In crises his responses were brilliant and effective, and he never let consideration for his own welfare get in the way of getting the job done. This made him a hero and overwhelmingly popular with the public. He also sincerely cared about those serving under him and about the enlisted personnel in general, which was a rarity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In those days the aristocracy regarded ordinary people as only being as important as their effect of the comfort of their "betters" was concerned. If a poor woman couldn't afford to take her child to a doctor, what did it matter? There were plenty potential servants around. Beresford's work for the poor, especially for sailors and their widows was tireless. At the same time, he was so often out of line in his behavior towards his superiors that the book's title Admiral Insubordinate is well chosen. When he wasn't actively serving (the RN had the odd habit of laying officers off on half-pay, sometimes for years, then calling them back to service for a few years, then laying them off again, etc) he filled in his time in Parliament. Of course, as an MP he could, and did, sound off loudly against those in power that he disliked. Unfortunately, his basis for dislike was apt to be petty personal differences or a failure to offer him the position/promotion he wanted.During WW I, he worked extremely hard to raise money for the war effort and for relief funds. He was responsible for raising money that, in today's terms, would be over 30 million pounds! And always, he agitated for more help for injured seamen and the families of dead sailors. He personally gave assistance to those who applied to him- unlike many politicians today who feel that others should, through taxes, help the poor, while keeping their own fortunes intact. On the other hand, his anti-government and anti-Admiralty outbursts were often things that could not possibly help, and might hinder, the war effort. He had no judgment about when personal carping could be harmful to the country he undeniably loved.Aside from Beresford's fascinating, multi-faceted personality, the book is very interesting for the look that it gives us of things in a different day. He witnessed things like the switch from horse drawn carriages to cars, from sail to steam, and the serious consideration of giving women votes. His day was the beginning of the modern era, both with regard to the beginning of new social awareness and values and the beginning of the industrial age.Not long before the war, for example, some ships still had canons- the kind that were loaded by putting the shot down the muzzle and using a ramrod! Many people, including Lord Charles, felt that submarines were a waste of time, because they couldn't actually do anything useful in a war. The British ships all still burnt coal instead of oil (he didn't approve of that change either). Altogether, I found the book hard to put down. There are some problems with the Kindle formatting. The smallest possible font is still rather large. Sometimes words are missing, and there are some errors of the type usually found with photocopies being processed by a computer. These problems aren't enough to make the book hard to read, they just give you a bit of a pause for deciphering now and then.

PDF Ebook Standing on His Shoulders: What I Learned about Race, Life, and High Expectations from My Haitian Superman Father, by David J Malebranche

In this funny, touching, and poignant memoir, David J. Malebranche celebrates the lessons he learned from his father, a Haitian physician who immigrated to the United States in the 1960s.

Malebranche provides a counter narrative to the current focus on absentee fathers in Black communities across the country, chronicling the ways his relationship with his father morphed, evolved, and ultimately grew stronger throughout his life.

As a young child, Malebranche believed his father to be omnipotent, a larger-than-life superhero. It wasn’t until he became a teenager and experienced the usual adolescent angst about parents that he realized significant culture differences and divergent belief systems could profoundly exacerbate the tensions in his relationship with his father and cause their views of each other to change drastically.

Despite the wide gap between their worldviews and lived experiences, both Malebranche and his father remained committed to finding a way to accept and respect one another. Today, Malebranche can look at his father—and at the enduring lessons about life he received from him—and say that he once more sees his father as a true hero.

Malebranche I had reservations about reading this book. I am biased. After all I am the Haitian father portrayed, a loving, flawed, hard working surgeon who would not exchange lives with any husband, father, grandfather in the world. "Standing on his shoulders" is a touching, panoramic view of a typical complex American family whose members care deeply for each other. Reading it I laughed, cried, reminisced. It's a complex. savory slice of human lives. It's a must read, a book for the ages.By the way Son you were the one who introduced me to the intricacies of Doctor Mario's world 30 years ago. You gave me your Nintendo and taught me the tricks of that addicting game. Remember ? And you were right about the Chicago's explosion. Your Mom and I didn't want to give you that 900 dollars not because we were cheap. We wanted to keep our baby boy home."Standing on his shoulders" is a tale of paternal and filial unconditional love and acceptance. It's a song to the communality of our human race and it's feelings. Humans are loving and wonderful. They are also aggravating, flawed and at times mean and hateful. But after all is said and done we are that one and unique human race.By the way present and future readers of "Standing on his shoulders" stay tuned. My lovely daughter Michelle is thinking about writing a book about her mother Donna, my companion of 50 years. She has a title in mind already :" Standing on her bra straps ". Go for it Michelle. As for the grand children Skylar and Addison it's too early to tell if they plan to follow in the literary footsteps of their uncle and mother.I have one request for the author of "Standing on his shoulders". I want Denzel to play me in the lead role. Your mother has already settled on Meryl. Well written book our son.

A Great Read for Any Parent and Child Navigating Their Relationshop By Daryl L Goodwin Insightful and candid, David Malebranche takes us on a personal journey while reflecting on his complex yet loving relationship with his father. A decorated surgeon Roger Joseph Malebranche was brought up to aspire to greatness and instilled the same thought into his children. Oft times via unconventional or tough parenting the book begs the fundamental question, does the end justify the means?David gets personal and talks about his struggles and great achievements growing up under a patriarch sometimes struggling to balance his career expectations with that of being a good father. Poignant and moving, the book shows us that both are attainable and David's dads upbringing, background along with that of his mom are key ingredients in his formation into the man he is today. It's truly an homage to his dad and how they've learned to love and have mutual respect for each other's journeys. A great read that paints vivid pictures of David's life in upstate New York, the travels he has taken as part of his medical career and the influence his dad on such.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. sad, funny By William Brazell I found this book gripping, moving, sad, funny, happy, and wise. (Full disclosure: I'm biased, because I know the author and his wonderful family, and I have the great honor of being mentioned favorably in these pages.) Dr. Roger Malebranche is indeed as great a man as his son portrays, and his mother Donna is as great a woman. The only downside I can see from this book is the number of parents who will read it and ask their children, "Why do you not write such a book about me?" It's a lovely, thoughtful book about fathers and sons, sons and mothers, friends and mentors, and the surprising strengths some people show in the face of a world that does not always deserve the good people it gets.
