Should a woman be punished for marrying a foreigner? Born into dire poverty during wartime China, a young girl finds opportunity, education, and dignity in the Communist Party. Wang Yulin goes from scrounging for warm cinders spewed from passing trains to learning radio technology and rising to responsible positions within China’s Broadcast Administration in Beijing. There she meets the love of her life, an American named Sidney Rittenberg, who, like her, believes that Communism is the best hope for China. But in 1968, their dreams are shattered when Sidney is thrown into prison on false charges of spying. Reviled as a "dog-spy's wife," Yulin is confined, persecuted, sent to labor camp, and separated from her children. After the Bitter Comes the Sweet is Yulin’s tumultuous life story, a tale of determination, resilience, perseverance, and struggle. Yulin discovers how hard times bring out meanness in some people and kindness in others, how to focus her strength and resources on survival, and how to use her rational mind to face injustice.

Behind Sidney Who Stayed Behind in China There is Yulin By Wendy Liu If “Behind every great man there's a great woman,” Yulin Wang Rittenberg is the ultimate embodiment of that saying. We all know that Sidney Rittenberg suffered 16 years of solitude imprisonment in China for basically nothing but loving China and the Communist Party’s ideals too much, Yulin’s book tells us how as Sidney’s wife she endured, through quiet tears and determination, cruelty and madness of the Cultural Revolution because of her love for Sidney. Theirs is a true story of love, a love that conquered hardship, injustice, and “the bitter” as Yulin calls it, and came out stronger, greater and sweeter. For those who lived through the Cultural Revolution, Yulin’s book also provides a review of that side of China that has brought bitterness to many and a reminder that only an open and democratic China could bring truly “the sweet” to the Chinese population. Yulin had this conclusion of her story, “Happiness comes from the struggle through unhappiness.” Both of them struggled through deepest unhappiness, they deserve highest happiness, Chinese and American.

I have never ever purchased so many copies of any book. Even for those who have read other first-hand accounts of suffering during the Cultural Revolution, this book is a page turner. Yulin’s fascinating personal story is seamlessly interwoven with history, culture and contemporary events. Some examples: for her mother's wedding, the family was so poor they borrowed an apple for display from a neighbor. The apple was returned after the wedding. Yulin’s food at the university (1960) during the Great Famine led her to survive on poplar leaves. Popular leaves are so bitter that even in ancient times people did not eat them when they were starving. Yulin’s husband, Sidney, an American was known across China as a friend of China, but during the Cultural Revolution was put in prison (incorrectly a second time!) as an American spy. During this time Yulin endured horrific trials just because she was Sidney’s wife. For example, she served two times in hard labor, yet somehow managed to keep her family together. Finally after 10 agonizing years, Sidney was released. Sidney and Yulin then moved to America, where after so many years of bitterness and sweat, Yulin enjoyed some sweet. One example: Yulin and Sidney became successful consultants for American corporations who wanted to move into China. Yulin then did what many Chinese said was impossible. She got Mao’s special train out of mothballs for an American client. Together with Sidney and the client, she traveled across China in luxury – including meals with a private chef. However, it is not how she faced any single trial that makes this book so rewarding. It is her determination to face whatever life threw at her. Yulin constantly faced tough physical and emotional challenges that most of us cannot imagine and yet she did not fall apart. In the end Yulin asks us to remember "Life is about struggle. You must learn how to struggle. Don't run away." I urge readers to run to the bookstore for a great read and to prepare yourselves for your own struggles – even though they probably pale in significance compared to what Yulin went through. by Linda Carl

By B Cville Yulin Wang Rittenberg's account opens a personal window on the ups, downs, and ups of China over the past 70 years. Since she married an American who was working in China she also experienced the changes in China's attitudes toward the outside world. Sidney Rittenberg, her husband, had come to China in 1944, joined the Chinese Communist Party, was accused by Stalin of being an American spy and spent six years in solitary, then became a leader in Chinese broadcasting. He flourished in the early Cultural Revolution and then was again sent to solitary for another ten years. But this is Yulin's story. She rose from absolute poverty by pursuing the opportunities for work and education that opened in the 1950s, becoming a radio technician and meeting and marrying Sidney in 1955. They led a happy and privileged life at the center of Chinese politics and started their family. Sidney was a very outspoken and articulate leftist, and so he became an early leader in the Cultural Revolution, but when the winds shifted Yulin became "the wife of an American spy" to be abused and tormented by everyone. It is amazing that she survived her tribulations, and it was by personal integrity and determination. The basic message of the book is how to survive and to maintain personal autonomy. After the death of Mao she and Sidney eventually emigrated to America, and the story remains amazing. Yulin became the typical successful immigrant, earning money by teaching cooking and knitting designer sweaters. Finally Sidney and eventually Yulin began to utilize their experience and connections in China by advising American companies. Sidney's memoir, The Man Who Stayed Behind, is also an amazing story, and the two together make a unique family history. But Yulin's book stands by itself as a great personal account of surviving and thriving in China and in the US.
