By Shanti Tobias Churton, well known as the leading scholar on Western Esoteric and Gnostic studies, has just released a masterpiece.In the initial chapters of his latest book, JERUSALEM!: The Real Life of WILLIAM BLAKE, as a historian, the author paints a picture for the reader of William Blake's London, England the place of his birth in 1757. Churton, in the role of objective scholar (Theology MA, from Oxford) makes note of the atmosphere that prevailed in Blake's life.Around 1778, the call for physical freedom and liberty, as well as 'spiritual liberty' provided Blake the impetus for formation of his own ideas.Tobias Churton, a writer par excellence provides us with the key to understanding Blake's esoteric and poetic genius.Blake saw what others couldn't see. Was he mad? Was he a prophet, a visionary? What is creative genius?Churton really 'knows' his subject. Like Blake, this author has the ability to lift us into another world; showing us the depth of Blake's poems, his art and vision, proving the reader with the key to understanding this often misunderstood artist. Chevalier The definitive biography of William Blake probably still needs to be written--we are still trying to make sense of him, and many segments of his life are still undocumented. Tobias Churton's Jerusalem! promises to give us the "real" life of Blake, as opposed to the life that had been invented by his Victorian biographers. No dispute there: the Victorian biographers (led by Alexander Gilchrist) were largely discredited some years ago, and many of the anecdotes they relate already have "approach with caution" labels attached to them. The book starts out promisingly well: Churton argues convincingly that Blake's parents were members of the Moravian Church, and that some of that teaching influenced Blake's own cosmology. Some of the spiritual interests of his friends--particularly Flaxman--gets mentioned as well, and Churton paints an interesting picture of the variety of new religious sects that sprung up in London in the 1780s. At some point, however, Churton runs out of new things to say, and settles back on relating the familiar outlines of Blake's life, supplemented by cherry-picking some of the more noteworthy passages in the Illuminated Books and The Four Zoas. A good deal of what Churton relates is easily available in other modern biographies, such as the excellent one by Peter Ackroyd; in fact, a much fuller account of Blake's turbulent relationship with William Hayley, his disastrous attempts to become a public figure in 1809, and his descent into obscurity until the 1820s, is available in Blake Records, which simply reprints all the available documents we have that mention Blake (apart from the writing of the man himself). Most puzzling is Churton's inclusion of extracts from diaries and letters of his own ancestor, The Rev. Ralph Churton, who was Blake's contemporary, and knew Flaxman, but never met Blake personally and seems never even to have heard of him. Churton includes these extracts to show some of the context of the times, and promises to draw a parallel between his ancestor's religious orthodoxy and Blake's own eccentric spirituality, but that never quite happens, and one suspects the inclusion of these extracts is simply to justify the claim that this biography includes "never-before-published" documents. As a biography, it's not bad, but anyone wanting to get a more comprehensive introduction to Blake's life and work would be better off with Ackroyd's book, which is much better written and has a much better understanding of Blake's thought.

This book was deeply probing, detailed and required a reader committed to understanding all minute facets of his writing and thinking.
