Baer Max Ackerman, M.D., a practicing psychiatrist in Plano, Texas wrote, "Your book is superb! He continues, "I'm sharing it with friends and family and recommending it. I may use it in one of the courses I teach at the Medical School in Dallas."Moon Flyers tells the story of a family's struggle with mental illness, a generally misunderstood medical condition. A father and daughter cope with severe depression in two distinct ways, with two dramatically different outcomes. Information and insights from different experiences give direction to others who similarly suffer and hope to the people who love them. Throughout Moon Flyers are narrative descriptions of stressful family conflicts. Other chapters illustrate that it is possible to manage and survive by finding humor in life's challenges and expressing emotions with creativity. Each section begins with quote to relate to the following narrative, for example, "That's the thing about depression: The fog is like a cage without a key," or "Children are a great comfort in your old age and they help you reach it faster, too." The author describes how she and her daughter survived a trip titled, "Murphy's Law, an observation that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." Another humorous episode happened in a hospital. Explanations of terms, such as self-medicating and bipolar disorder, along with a list of national and local mental health resources at the conclusion provide specific and useful information. Help is available. Barbara V. Paper, a native of Mobile, Alabama, graduated with a BSEd degree from the University of Alabama. She traveled throughout the Southeast providing educational and leadership programs for the Union for Reform Judaism. Barbara retired in Chattanooga, TN and joined the Chattanooga Writers Guild. She wrote an article, "Mental Illness, A Jewish Concern?" which can be found online at the Berman Jewish Policy Archive: bjpa.org-mental illness.

Sharing her family's experiences to help us better understand By The Writer's Corner I read a "pre-release" copy of the book and found it informative as well as entertaining. Ms. Paper tackles this difficult subject using personal examples and humor whenever possible to educate the reader on the trials and tribulations of mental illness. The book provided me with an understanding of what life would be like for an individual and a family living with this condition. I applaud Ms. Paper for sharing her experiences so that others may be more comfortable discussing the issues related to mental illness.

It's secret. It's silenced. But it's there. Yet here, bravely inviting us to examine myriad manifestations of depression and mental illness, comes a talented author to provide us with a straight-forward, and often humorous, look her own journey! This wonderfully organized, well-researched, and easy-to-read book brings a very dark subject squarely into the light.

The ups and downs of a family in turmoil are honestly revealed. "Moon Flyers" underscores our fragility as human beings and reminds us that we are all real people living in a real world. We are a better couple for having read the book.Chaim and Ronni Charyn

I picked it up and couldn't put it down, and when I finished it I gave it to my family to read. It's beautifully and poetically written. The author shares his deeply spiritual experience of traveling around the US and working odd jobs to get by, with little in the way of material possessions to his name -- and the profound journey into life/spirit/love/truth that comes from it. This book shows you what's possible. It shows you what happens if you're willing to see outside the constructs of working 9 to 5, working working working to own own own more stuff, better stuff, newer stuff. So many of us feel heavy and deprived of what matters most to us, and this book is about embracing the incredible lightness of being that is our TRUE nature if we are willing to allow ourselves to go there. It's a book about freedom and a book I want to give to all of my closest friends, my family members, and everyone who I love deeply to remind them of what's possible and of what they are truly capable of. Thanks Jake for your incredible strength and depth and vulnerability. What a total blessing to read your book.

Slow Travel with a Purpose By Amazon Customer Having met Jake around the time of the last story in this collection, it was a privilege to read about the span of his journey and witness the evolution in his writing. I admire his courage and dedication to this alternate path through life. It’s inspiring to know that when you follow your heart’s urging, a path always appears. My favorite pieces were the diary-like clips of “Scenes: From a Summer in Gainesville” that read like script scenes, the tribute to Kerouac in “American Rhythm” and the sensory experience of "Wandering towards Autumn in Southern Oregon." And the jazz, always, the music and the beat, permeating its way through the pages. But what I will really take away is the inspiration to open up to each moment and receive… Receive the beauty of all things, the gifts of connecting to nature and kindred spirits, and the messages that come in times of surrender, like the snow-white horse that bends to drink from a steaming pool… and then dream becomes reality.

It is the odd conversation on a bus that makes us think something bigger than ourselves is happening. It is that brief moment flirting with a pretty girl becomes a small town scene indelibly played out again and again with different actors. It is how to make some hippy-ass root and bark tea, leaving us jealous we never stayed a broke night in a tepee. It is the places in between where we are coming from and going to; the places where, in the end, when we reflect, is where we realize most of our living was done. This is what writing down those lost, profound moments would be if we collected them in a book.

Luis Henao.

Amazon.com Review Take a trip to last century's Alaska through Muir's clean, easy-going, enthusiastic prose. He wrote the way he took pictures, with insight, attention, care and genuine feeling. It's a lovely look into a beautiful land and its inhabitants the way it used to be, told in a flowing narrative that is far less rushed than contemporary travel tales.

Review ''Probably no other man in this country has his enthusiasm for mountains and glaciers . . . united with so rare a literary gift.'' --John Burroughs, American naturalist and essayist''Take a trip to last century's Alaska through Muir's clean, easy-going, enthusiastic prose. From the Publisher Smitten with Muir's compelling story, a team of experts was assembled to create this unique audio production. With a deft hand, the team that brought the first environmental radio drama to the BBC (Producer Mara Purl, Foley artist David L. Krebs, composer Marilyn Harris and engineer Bill Berkuta) are joined by NPR announcer and famed actor Lee Salisbury. The project is further enhanced by the visual artistry of Dave Zaboski best known for his animation work at Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures.

45 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Don't start your Muir education with this one By Corinne H. Smith If you're new to John Muir's writings, please don't start with this one. It's a worthwhile read in its own right, don't get me wrong. But read _My First Summer in the Sierra_ or a Muir biography like Michael P. Cohen's _The Pathless Way_ before you move on to this one. Get a good dose of what the naturalist is like and learn some of his background, and then you'll be in the proper frame of mind to tackle _Travels in Alaska_. Otherwise, this book is just one glacier after another. And bless his heart, Muir wants to see them all. And climb them and explore them and sketch them and hike their entire lengths and write about them ad nauseum. He leaves his companions in his wake and puts himself squarely in the face of isolated danger over and over again. Read this book first, and you'll think he's insane. Know his roots in Wisconsin and his good work in California, and you'll be better able to appreciate what he thinks of and does in the Alaska of the late 1800s.

Yet significant aspects I remember well. Given Muir's exuberance for life and almost everything he encounters in his travels, one almost looses view of Muir the botanist and geologist. But not quite. Here we find the author contemplating the activity of glaciers and documenting the flora of southeast Alaska. Muir (who tended strongly toward vegetarianism) gleefully entertaining himself by foiling duck hunters. Baffling the locals by happily wandering out into major storms. The book is a journal of Muir's 1879, 1880, and 1890 trips (he wouldn't mind if we called them adventures) to SE Alaska's glaciers, rivers, and temperate rain forests. He died while preparing this volume for publication.I remind myself, and anyone reading this, that Muir isn't for every reader. And, as other reviewers have stated, this may not be the volume in which to introduce oneself to the one-of-a-kind John Muir. One reviewer doesn't think that Muir is entirely credible in these accounts. I won't say whether or not this is wrong, but I tend to a different view. For some of us -- and certainly for Muir -- wilderness is a medicine, a spiritual tonic, so to speak. For the individual effected in this way, physical impediments and frailties rather dissolve away when he is alone in wildness. I once heard Graham Mackintosh (author of Into a Desert Place) speak of this. In all of his travels alone in the desert, he doesn't recall having ever been sick. This may not sound credible to some, but I strongly suspect it is true.If you like Muir's writings, read this book. If you like the stuff of Best Sellers, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Muir and Alaska By Richard T. Mahoney The beauty of this wonderful reprinting is how it shows John Muir as a person, how it helps us to understand the dynamic and overwhelming beauty of Alaska, and the changes in the people of Alaska. Muir's complete, tireless, and joyful commitment to nature comes through on every page. The book unintentionally provides an excellent portrait of the kind of inexhaustible devotion it takes to change the world as did Muir. The book also provides a stunning portrait of Alaska in the latter part of the 19th Century and allows one to compare the Alaska of those days with Alaska of earlier times and of today. The biggest changes are in the glaciers and in the people. The glaciers have receded dramatically as a natural part of their centuries' long retreat. It is interesting to compare what Muir saw with the experience of Vancouver almost exactly 100 years earlier (ca. 1793). Vancouver could hardly enter Glacier Bay. Muir could enter quite some distance, but the glaciers were still the dominant features. Today, the glaciers have largely receded into deep valleys. Muir encountered people in Alaska living largely as they had for centuries. They were hunters and fishermen and lived in small groups along the shore line. As Jonathan Raban points out in the intricately woven fabric of his sublime book "Passage to Juneau," the people of southeast Alaska considered the sea to be the real environment of their lives while the land was considered dangerous and unknowable. They lived along the shore and knew how to live off and with the sea year round. The lives of the Alaskan people are very different today but greatly influenced by the past. Raban often characterizes Muir's writing as overblown and florid. However, it is a portrait of a man, a maritime land and a people. To do justice to those three, the book had to be what it is - an astonishingly colorful and detailed portrait in words.

Our willpower is limited, yet we rely on it every day to get our tasks done. Even if we build willpower slowly over time, it's never enough to reach all of our goals. The solution lies in habit creation, the method by which we transform hard tasks into easy ones, making them automatic and independent of our will power. Each of us has millions of habits, in how we do our work, interact with others, perceive the world, and think about ourselves. Left unexamined, these habits are just as likely to hinder our progress as they are to push it along. Without a deliberate system for building habits, we become our own worst enemy.

Superhuman by Habit examines habit building in depth. It covers the principles and philosophies of habit building, as well as the practical nuts and bolts implementing those habits. The second half of the audiobook is dedicated to specific habits in every major area of life, covering the pros and cons of each, the path to implementing them, and specific notes about each one.

It's specific in its recommendations and tells you how to do each one as well as what to expect, and when to expect it. Which means I can actually implement this stuff. For example, he talks about building a habit of daily meditation. He gives specifics about how to do this. He tells you why you would want to do this from a practical non-"woo woo" perspective. Then he tells you how long you should follow this practice to start to see results. Without that extra info (which is normally left out by other books), I am usually trying something and then dropping it when I don't see results. Or trying something and not knowing what results I should be looking for.The first half of the book is focused on the skill of building a habit in general, hacks, and pitfalls to watch out for. It's quite good and thorough on the subject. (I've read a number of habit and behavior change books.)But to me, the second half of the book is the best (though I guess you need the first part to prepare you for the second). The second part is like looking through a list of superpowers and deciding which ones I want to give myself. I was seriously giddy. It's a list of a bunch of different habits that you could build for yourself, why you would want to, how to do it, and what to expect from the results. It's organized by topic with titles in each, so you can skip ones that you already mastered.Again, great book. I'm already trying this stuff out, and more importantly know when I should be expecting to see results.

I have been a follower of his blog for a while, and he has earned my admiration. This book did not disappoint! Although I have had the book for about a week, I just now finished it, even though I am a very fast reader. Why is this? Because when I am reading something I truly enjoy, I don't want the experience to be over, so I drag it out as long as I can! This was such a book.Even though I am quite a bit older than the author, I have found that he has a lot to teach me. He writes not only about how to incorporate new habits into your life, but also why you would want to. As a result of reading this book, I have noted several habits I want - and need - to get moving on. And now I know how best to do just that! In addition, the author gives a list of recommended habits that he thinks will improve anyone's life, and how to go about adding them. Fortunately for me, several of these habits exist already in my repertoire, and I am glad to note that I don't have to or need to "load" them as well. There are a few typos in this book. As a writer myself, I know how hard it is to catch everything. I have no doubt that Tynan will fix the few that have appeared, and I do not find the quantity of typos to be high enough to be distracting. The message he transmits is more important than a few typos (and I don't often say that - those who know me know that I am a harsh critic of errors.)If you have a need, or just a desire, to improve your life, especially if you want to do it in a systematic and orderly way, causing the least trouble for yourself, this is definitely the book for you. I absolutely do recommend it.

A great supplement/extension of the blog's themes By Luke Murray I've been reading Tynan's blog since he started it (9ish years) and those familiar with and a fan of his book will not be dissappointed:- a more organized, clarified treatise on habits. Ultimately, this stuff is just as good as his blog and his language or tone doesn't change much (although he gets a bit basic at points, likely assuming you haven't been reading his stuff for years already). I feel like I'm sitting down with him and saying "hey, what's with your obsession with habits? why is it such a big deal in your life and how do you apply this obsession?". And getting a knowledge bomb of an answer. What you really see by the end of the book is#1 How far Tynan has gone to integrate habits & in EVERY form of his life.#2 How obvious the benefits & long term ramifications of this level of intensity & commitment to habits you know matter to you.An example & a clear, interesting, demonstrable explanation for becoming...you know...superhuman by habit. If you're not sure if you'll enjoy the book, just read a half-dozen blog posts at tynan dot com. If you like those, buy the book. If you don't, don't buy it expecting it to be different.Unquestionably worth well more than $5

I am complaining that Amazon sold this to me under LGBT comics and the only thing that links it to the LGBT community is a character with HIV. It has great artwork and so far a decent story (for the first chapter of a book). If you are looking for an LGBT comic, however, bear in mind that the protagonist is a straight, white cis-gendered male (seemingly).
