A compendium of North American travel and place-based pieces composed by the author between the ages of 23 and 35, this book explores gritty urban areas, eclectic towns, and isolated geographical landscapes, introducing a cast of interesting local characters along the way. The atmospheric narratives blend genuine working class ethics with jazzy intuitive prose in order to transport the reader deep into various localities and communities in the United States and Canada. The author sponsored his 12-year trek across the land by working as a farmhand, natural chef, organic gardener, bartender, landscape artist, writing instructor, and mentor to at-risk youth. As a whole, this collection of travel essays encourages the reader to be with the land and its people in order to deeply feel the world.

Blue Collar Nomad: The Literary Reflections of a Grassroots Pilgrim, by Jake Kaida

Review "Blue Collar Nomad is a serene collection of meditations on self, time, and place in the 21st century American landscape. Evoking the spiritual quests of Jon Krakauer, Jack Kerouac, and Henry David Thoreau, this collection of poems, narratives, and essays affirms one’s faith in the power of language to root and restore a world of one. For anyone searching for the Church of the Blue Sky, reading Jake Kaida is a must.”  —Nancy M. Grace, author, Breaking the Rule of Cool"Jake Kaida found spiritual discipline in the nomadic lifestyle and sustained it with the gift of intuitive grace. Above all, Kaida learned about showing up and being present. His personal journey is beautifully told in Blue Collar Nomad in both prose and poem."  —Christine Cote, editor, Stone Voices

I picked it up and couldn't put it down, and when I finished it I gave it to my family to read. It's beautifully and poetically written. The author shares his deeply spiritual experience of traveling around the US and working odd jobs to get by, with little in the way of material possessions to his name -- and the profound journey into life/spirit/love/truth that comes from it. This book shows you what's possible. It shows you what happens if you're willing to see outside the constructs of working 9 to 5, working working working to own own own more stuff, better stuff, newer stuff. So many of us feel heavy and deprived of what matters most to us, and this book is about embracing the incredible lightness of being that is our TRUE nature if we are willing to allow ourselves to go there. It's a book about freedom and a book I want to give to all of my closest friends, my family members, and everyone who I love deeply to remind them of what's possible and of what they are truly capable of. Thanks Jake for your incredible strength and depth and vulnerability. What a total blessing to read your book.

Slow Travel with a Purpose By Amazon Customer Having met Jake around the time of the last story in this collection, it was a privilege to read about the span of his journey and witness the evolution in his writing. I admire his courage and dedication to this alternate path through life. It’s inspiring to know that when you follow your heart’s urging, a path always appears. My favorite pieces were the diary-like clips of “Scenes: From a Summer in Gainesville” that read like script scenes, the tribute to Kerouac in “American Rhythm” and the sensory experience of "Wandering towards Autumn in Southern Oregon." And the jazz, always, the music and the beat, permeating its way through the pages. But what I will really take away is the inspiration to open up to each moment and receive… Receive the beauty of all things, the gifts of connecting to nature and kindred spirits, and the messages that come in times of surrender, like the snow-white horse that bends to drink from a steaming pool… and then dream becomes reality.

It is the odd conversation on a bus that makes us think something bigger than ourselves is happening. It is that brief moment flirting with a pretty girl becomes a small town scene indelibly played out again and again with different actors. It is how to make some hippy-ass root and bark tea, leaving us jealous we never stayed a broke night in a tepee. It is the places in between where we are coming from and going to; the places where, in the end, when we reflect, is where we realize most of our living was done. This is what writing down those lost, profound moments would be if we collected them in a book.
