“Hi, I’m Breezy, and this is my wife, Dodo.” With hand extended, that was how I usually introduced us to new acquaintances. They would react with a smile, a look of disbelief, and a series of questions – “How and when did you get those names?” – “How did you two meet and marry?” – etc. Our response was quite simple. We were born a week apart in December 1928 to couples who were friends in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. I was given my nickname by a nun in elementary school, at about the same time that Dodo was given hers by her brother Ted. We grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. My dad working in the coal mines and Dodo’s dad owning a local tavern. We first met and became friends in 9th grade, and our friendship grew during our high school years. We began dating while I was attending the University of Scranton, and, a few years later, in October 1950, at the age of 21, were married in the same church in which we had been baptized. I served in the military from 1952 to 1954, which led to my career working at the Department of the Army. We settled in southeastern Pennsylvania, where we lived, worked, and raised their family. This response would lead to more questions. Over the years, our three daughters, Donna, Diane, and Janet, asked similar and many more questions. We answered them with the full extent of our recollections. Yet, it seemed that there was always another question. Now, in my golden years, my daughters have persuaded me to tell them, and their children, the full story of “Breezy” and “Dodo,” including the histories of our families, their immigration from Poland to Pennsylvania, my paternal grandmother’s 21 children, and maternal grandmother’s 13 children. Life growing up and living in a small coal mining town during the 1930s and 40s. getting married and working to achieve the American dream of middle class.

Breezy and Dodo: A Life Story, by John "Breezy" F. Bartkowski About the Author John and his future wife Dorothy were born to families of Polish immigrants who migrated to northeastern Pennsylvania in the late 1800s and early 1900s for a better life. John was born on the kitchen table in his grandmother’s house in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, where he grew up and experienced many of the events in his life, including meeting Dorothy. They grew up during the great depression and World War II. Upon graduating from Dickson City High School, John attended the University of Scranton, on a basketball scholarship and began dating Dorothy. John served in the military from 1952 to 54 which led to his career working at the Department of Army. John and Dorothy were married in 1950 and settled in southeastern Pennsylvania where they lived, worked and raised their family. John and Dorothy worked together to achieve the American dream, middle class Americans. This biography is John’s first literary work. What began as John dictating his life along with that of his wife, the late, Dorothy “Dodo” Buza, for his daughters and grandchildren, evolved to include the heritage of the two families, background information on the area where the families settled in Pennsylvania, and a slice of the history of this country.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. this is a book not simply about two wonderful people, their marriage By Andrea M Ketch this is a book not simply about two wonderful people, their marriage, lives together, which is beautiful in itself..But far more, within it is a history, the first person story of the Polish people's migration to United States,the hardships it took to survive, hard work of coal mining, desire to succeed, desire to become American citizens,the family's closeness and pride in Polish society.Fascinating, easy to read but it has a depth that desperately needs comparison to other societies' entries into this countryespecially at this time of societal upheaval.

By Deb W I don't know about you, but I am one who typically glosses over the first chapter when it gives background to the story that describes the area looking to get into the subject of the story as soon as possible. Having spent quite a bit of time as a child in Dickson City, I savor every word in this book. Now that I have moved into the other chapters, I truly can't put it down but am torn as I don't want it to end. I remember being at Polonia Park with other parishioners from St. Mary's and walking the neighborhoods that always had a tavern in someone's home on the street. I always wondered why anyone would want to share part of their home with strangers (in the form of a bar) and now realize this was the norm in those days. I remember my grandmother always having canaries and see why, they were truly lifesavers for the men in the coal mines. If you a looking for a great story of true love with some beautiful descriptions of the Dickson City area and the wonderful families that lived there, this is the one for you!

I grew up in one of the later mentioned neighborhoods. A trip down memory lane! Hooray for your literary success!!
