This is an account of a 4-year personal journey. The structure of those 4 years in my mind is like a gathering wave out in the surf, preparing to hit land. It gathered force, rose to a climax, and splashed out in all its glory, quietly touching land in its dregs. I awoke on the beach four years later, having been softly deposited upon new shores, memories of storms, winds, challenges, surprises, and blissfully calm sunny days still floundering, swirling, and churning in my soul. My journal is an incomplete and yet entirely independent account of my experiences. While I knew for a long time this was a story of personal development, it was only after reviewing, re-reading, and compiling all of these entries that I truly understood what I had kindly passed on to my older self: the story of my coming of age. I had inadvertently recorded the bildungsroman of my own life. My time in China, looking back on it, was a process of learning to value myself. It was about discovering there can be beauty in the ordinary, and that with a little hard work good things can happen. In retrospect, one’s life unfolds so naturally it is breathtaking. This is advice. It is also entertainment, philosophy, pleasure, pain, joy, and sadness. It is to be used as you see fit, if at all. As Baz Luhrmann wisely exhorts: “Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia; dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts, and recycling it for more than it's worth”.
