It tells how the Swiss develop a great religious tolerance and how a Catholic who sees his nation as most important, gives his life to save his Calvinist compatriot. Along the way, the grotesquerie of the treacherous political and religious rivalries and the horrific acts of the Parisian populous are heart wrenchingly told. I had to look up the 80 years war to understand the threads of the story, but the telling is masterful. A book well worth reading!

In January 1976, a young Australian couple of Polish and Belarus background, but having lived in Australia since they were five, Eddie and Nina, left for Europe. They wanted to visit family and to see Europe behind the ‘Iron curtain’. They flew to London and caught a ferry across to Holland where they bought a VW in excellent condition for $US300, and headed slowly in the direction of Poland. George another Aussie, of Russian background but born in Poland had been there previously, and was already in Europe with his Polish wife Danuta, who he met in Krakow Poland on a previous visit. Her parent’s flat in Krakow was to become home for everyone. For the next couple of years, the two couples would travel mostly together all over Poland, as well as Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Iran. Communism had created a massive shortage of quality consumer goods in Poland, whilst Western Europe had a cheap and plentiful supply. Border controls were sloppy, and every trip west by the couples, resulted in a shipment of western brand items to Poland for poor relatives initially, and eventually ever increasing quantities for resale in Poland-resulting in hefty profits. These adventures escalated rapidly and resulted in a completely new world of commerce, either outwitting or bribing the ever corrupt and greedy officials, constantly holding out their palms, ready to be greased. The couples took part in the so-called ‘economy behind the economy’, that was rife in every communist country, but they were not subject to the travel and financial constraints restricting the average Polish smart operator, or businessman as they called themselves. This book is about how a simple trip to communist Poland in 1976 turned two average Aussies and their wives, into overnight entrepreneurs under the noses of the unsuspecting bureaucrats, or occasionally with their acquiescence for a cut of the action.

In 1961 television news was in relative infancy in the United States. Network news broadcasts ran just 15 minutes, hardly enough time to communicate the news of the day. Local news broadcasts likewise ran 15 minutes, five minutes for news, five minutes for weather and five minutes for sports. But in October of 1961 a brilliant television pioneer named Sam Zelman decided to change the TV news landscape by introducing "The Big News," an hour long broadcast featuring 45 minutes of local news and the 15 minute network broadcast with Douglas Edwards. The newspaper critics scoffed, it couldn't be done. But Sam proved them wrong. He introduced a former TV pitchman from Chicago, Jerry Dunphy, as his anchorman, and almost immediately a news legend was born. His other hires were Ralph Story, truly one of TV's greatest storytellers, weatherman Bill Keene and sports director Gil Stratton, a baseball umpire and part-time actor. It was one of the great success stories in the history of TV news with ratings that dominated the marketplace for a dozen years. One of Sam Zelman's other hires was Pete Noyes, a virtual unknown who had worked in the trenches of Los Angeles journalism for a local wire service and had built a reputation for investigative reporting. One of Pete's first stories in 1961 was that Los Angeles Dodger President Walter O'Malley had built his new stadium in Chavez Ravine with only one drinking fountain, the better to sell lots of beer to thirsty fans. In 1963 the Big News expanded to an hour and the CBS Evening News, featuring a new anchorman named Walter Cronkite went from 15 to 30 minutes. It was then Pete Noyes was named producer of the Big News. His exploits were legendary. He exposed the Mafia's plan to steal $14 million in Teamsters money earmarked for a luxury home development near Beverly Hills. He won the Edward L. Murrow award for investigative reporting when he revealed that Charles Manson and his so-called family were responsible for the horrific Tate-LaBianca murders. Pete fought the Bank of America to a standstill when its officers tried to kill his documentary, "The Anonymous Howard Hughes." And one of TV's most acclaimed programs, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," had its roots in the Big News where the role of managing editor Lou Grant was based on Pete's daily grind. Pete describes the factors that led to the death of "The Big News," the TV consultants with their zany ideas, the inexperienced news directors and the bosses at CBS who looked the other way while the walls came crashing down around them.

Noyes is one of the best investigative reporter-producers ever to work in television and he doesn't mince words in this fast-moving, always fascinating recounting of the early days of television news. A valuable addition to Los Angeles history and one of the few books available on what the beginnings of television news were all about. Don't miss it.

Tarlau Pete Noyes tells stories of local TV news in Los Angeles like no one else. He's seen and experienced it all - starting with the legendary "Big News," a broadcast that was ahead of its time in every way. I personally enjoyed the back-stories Pete tells of some of the folks I came to know from the "Big News" period, who were still at Channel 2 when I came to work there in 1977 (after KNXT's glory years had passed). Whether a broadcast news student or a retired veteran of our business, "Who Killed The Big News?" brings a lot to learn for everyone interested in journalism. He's probably he best investigative reporter tv ever had. Pete's recollection of the time news was replaced by nonsense, smart news editors were replaced by bean counters and professional were replaced by long-haired blondes who can read. It's a great, albeit sad, read.

This psychological disorder has received little attention in the medical community and those experiencing PNES have often been misdiagnosed as having epilepsy. Some have been told that they are faking their seizures because their seizures do not register on standard tests for epilepsy. Non-epileptic seizures usually occur as a result of past trauma (PTSD) or stressful events which cannot be fully processed by the mind. It is our hope that the telling of our stories will give a voice to those who suffer with PNES and bring awareness to this disorder, educate medical professionals, families and friends of those with PNES and create a new level of compassion and understanding in order to bring about healing for PNES sufferers and all of those affected by this illness.

Sommer This is a very useful resource to reinfoce the profoundly comforting and perhaps healing fact that "you are not alone" with this unfortunately still poorly-understood condition.Ms. Martiros' work does a great job of brining the patients' voices to the literature on PNES and will hopefully enhance dialogue and understanding between healhcare professionals and patients. Too many people suffer with this condition and I hope these loving and sometimes painful stories help to bring awareness to this By Greg Martiros A moving testimony from people who have suffered with PNES, My partner suffered with this condition and the ignorance and callousness of the medical community for many years. Our life suffered with misdiagnosis, wrong medications and a feeling of isolation. Too many people suffer with this condition and I hope these loving and sometimes painful stories help to bring awareness to this condition. The honesty in these stories cannot be escaped.

The hard work of Mary Martiros and Lorna Myers is so valuable in helping everyone to understand this illness and it also provides people who have it the comfort that they are not alone and that other people have found a way to heal. It is presented in a format that exposes the varied ways that PNES affects different people. I am also overwhelmed and humbled by the courage that so many people that have PNES face each day with. In that respect this book is inspirational. I looked up the modern version of the Hippocratic Oath and it says in part:"I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug. I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.""In Our Own Words" is a must read for physicians and medical students and all medical professionals.

By mebythesea A totally unique work by a born author who also was born into a situation of systematic child abuse. From this authentic literary voice we hear what it was like to have nowhere to go except back each day to the "home" where malevolence and danger lurked. Yet we also get to watch a character and integrity that miraculously remains in tact and a child and eventually a young adult and adult who manages to not repeat that truly vicious cycle but instead maintains an ability to be aware of and concerned about the people he comes in contact with. The author somehow emerges from his harrowing experience as a kind and beautiful spirit as well as a contributing member of society. This should be required reading for those in the field of child abuse but also a must read for everyone else. It deserves to become a classic in its genre.
